Just read an article in The Guardian: www.theguardian.com/music/2021/mar/15/disc-go-should-you-get-rid-of-your-cdsI have around 3000 CDs, many of which are boxed up in the garage, and most of which I haven't played for years. When I get a new CD, I usually play it once then copy it onto my phone, so the discs are rarely played more than once or twice. But I still buy them! I still prefer that physical product, that clatter through the letter box of yet another new CD, and the anticipation of playing it for the first time. For the sake of space making, I really should have a good sort through them, but I don't know how many I could actually part with. Do you still buy CDs or have you moved more or less fully to digital music?

hehe. i've more or less moved away from CDs to digital, although in some respects, the diversion is also back to vinyl.
currently also preparing a load of dvds for ebay - including ANATO dvd-a and AC/DC Back In Black (dual disc)

Not sure I can actually remember the last CD I did buy, having moved almost completely across to streaming, Spotify for all my "official" music needs, Youtube Music for MP3 (VBR0) versions of my bootleg collection and anything that's not available on Spotify. Still got all my CD's, tapes and vinyl boxed up in the attic.
Can't ever see me listening to another CD again (actually only got one Blu-Ray player and no CD players in the house) , but I do miss vinyl and am inching ever closer to buying a decent turntable/amp in the near future.

Have thousands of CD's, but they are all in the loft. Been using Spotify since 2016. Doubt I'll buy another CD again.

I'm almost entirely digital, as I find moving house is much easier having to box up and move fewer CDs. That being said, I do have a small collection of CDs I like for their artwork or sentimental reasons.
Of course, to completely contradict my first point, we've started building up our vinyl collection, which will prove to be problematic the next time we move... I just hope the next time is the last time!

I was at about 1500, but rationalised them down to just the Queen ones and a few others.
I doubt I'll buy many more, although one did arrive last week, oddly enough.

I do tend to gravitate towards box sets these days, particularly Steven Wilson's remixes of Jethro Tull (admittedly I've gotten only Heavy Horses and Stormwatch at the moment), so if I'm buying any CDs these days it's mostly as part of a box set.

I keep nearly all of my CDs at my folks'. It's been a while since I last cared about physical formats, there really is no point for me to own non-digital media anymore. I am sure that, sometime in the distant future, I will inevitably have to get rid of most physical things I own and keep. You simply cannot accumulate stuff forever.
Also, 3 years ago I got rid of over 300 CDs/DVDs that I used to backup all of the data I worked with years prior. I went through them all and recovered all the interesting stuff, which is conveniently accessible now. Before that, it was just unusable.

Get off my lawn. I still listen to CDs regularly, and I don't have music on my phone.

I still buy new releases on CDs. Occasionally I also buy used CDs, as they're cheaper and usually the only issue is that the case might be a bit worn or scratched, the CD itself plays just fine. I especially like visiting my local second-hand record shop and dig through their boxes and bins (not just CDs but LPs and singles as well - I found the Radio Ga Ga 7" there once). A couple of times I've bought stuff from bands I normally wouldn't put on my music shopping list - Procol Harum is a good example, I only knew that one song from them but the last time I visited that shop I bought a best-of CD and liked almost all of the tracks there.
I do also convert the CDs to MP3 so I can listen to them from my phone while I'm on the go. But every now and then, I sit down and put a CD or LP on in my hi-fi and just relax.

I am absolutely not getting rid of my CDs. I don't really use streaming services and have no desire to switch to what TS strangely calls 'digital' music (CDs are fully digital, after all...). I'm also not on board with the vinyl-craze - there are some LPs that just sound better than their CD-counterparts, simply because the vinyl-versions are better produced. A good example, IMHO, is Al Stewart - Year Of The Cat. Very decent engineering on the vinyl, piss-poor job on the CD. But, all other things being equal, you can just get far better sound quality from a CD (or other digital format) than you can from an LP. I like having a physical product, but I also dislike the various kinds of 'optimization' that are so frequently applied to streaming music, not to mention the still-too-frequent over-compression (both audio-compression and file-compression, btw). In my personal opinion, the overall quality of music has not declined since the '80s, but the quality of production has suffered badly from some bad habits that have been perversely turned into presumed virtues starting in that decade.
Also, not an inconsiderable point for me: I like jazz, amongst other things. For many of the musicians I love, the master tapes of pretty much all their recordings were lost in the horrendous 2008 Universal Studios fire. That means that the early-2000s batch of transfers from the master are likely to be the best sound quality we will EVER get of these recordings - all future issues will be sourced either from these CDs or some earlier transfers.
Finally, I can see streaming services folding at some future point, I can see certain recordings and/or versions being removed for lack of interest and/or replaced by newly edited/'improved'/'remastered' versions, leaving you little or no choice as to the version of a certain recording you want to hear. CD seems like a much more credible long-term prospect to me.
An extra point that shouldn't have much value beyond my personal opinion, emotionally and aesthetically - I think the album is the modern equivalent to the symphony, the highest musical form popular music has developed. I see a trend towards disjointed single-song issues, and I don't like that in the least, just as I generally have little interest in singles-only artists from earlier times.

Get off my lawn. I still listen to CDs regularly, and I don't have music on my phone. Ditto. I did get rid of 50 or so CD's a few years ago, but I'm still buying them. Rarely, but I do like something new now and then. I had been leasing my RAV, but when the time came to turn it in, I decided to buy it instead. Why?? Because it has a CD player. My kids now refer to my vehicle as the most expensive CD player in the world.

LP, CD, cassette - I've kept it all, and still play each format. I also still play VHS and DVD, as well as digital formats on my computer. I even have some laserdiscs. Unfortunately I can't play the latter, but if I can track down a machine cheap enough, it will be rigged to the 50" telly no probs.

Okay - wee edit to the above. It's true and it's not (I said I kept everything, but that's not quite right). I once sold my entire collection of vinyl. I also had a bad spell of life in general and mental health, where I threw out my bootleg CDs and all of my cassettes (among other things). I've since built things up again, and still use/enjoy all formats.

Sure, I have a lot of music stored on my computer/phone, but the stuff I really care about...I must own, see and touch!

I enjoy too much the tactile experience [...] the stuff I really care about...I must own, see and touch! Just kidding! I know this is definitely an unpopular opinion over here, but I think that over time you just cannot get too attached to actual things and only fundamental things such as health, loved ones and culture (such as music) is what really matters. Sure, I do keep things I like but when I think about it, there's a whole room in my current place that I use as storage and I never, ever look, remember or care about what's in there. It became trash, mostly. I keep realising that I don't care about old stuff as much as I thought. I find it healthier than just endlessly filling my home and having to carry things around.

I love my CD collection I have around 9,000 , so I sure ain't going to start a big vinyl collection , I have around 150 vinyl album's. But lets face it you can argue all you like but vinyl takes up a lot of room and is prone to skipping , jumping and on Amazon reviews people do moan quite bit about new vinyl having faults. If you store your CD's correctly keep them clean with some Cd cloths / Cd cleaner they last a very long time. I get the nostalgia of vinyl and all the artwork and you can get some fantastic turntables , but the days of me getting up every 25 minutes to turn the record over have gone .

No CD's are a great archival medium that will last for decades.
The same can't be said about computer storage such as hard drives etc.

We park our cars in the same garage, so to speak (although I’m probably a fair way shy of 3,000 ) I still buy CDs routinely, even if I don’t listen to them directly any more. In fact in Queen-related terms I’ve only just started collecting the Hollywood Records reissues from 1991. I like the idea of a physical backup too much to go digital. That said, I will buy downloads if it’s only the odd one or two songs I want from any given album.

Each and every one of us is nothing more than a temporary caretaker of "our belongings" and as you get older, collections become less important. We have fun searching for items and get joy and a sense of achievement when they arrive and you can cross them off your list, but then ultimately they just end up on a shelf.

Yes I am getting a Turntable for Christmas from good old Dad I think it's a [Technics SL-1500c ] which I am sure will be plenty good enough to play my small collection of vinyl about 150 LP's & around 200 45's . I still have my all my original Queen LP's as I brought them from" Queen" through to"" Made In Heaven" and the live LP'S . I cleaned them all not so long ago and put them in those Paper wrappers you can get to keep them dust free. I will no doubt in time start to buy all the recent Queen LP'S that are on vinyl . Plus all of the Pink Floyd vinyl , some Genesis , Deep Purple , Muse , Judas Priest , Gary Numan & Peter Gabriel . However I am not going to go mad and start a massive vinyl collection 500 maximum as I just don't have the space .

I still have boxes of my old vinyl in the garage, but I know if I go down that road again it will become an obsession, and I just haven't the room for them. Not to mention the cost of LPs these days. Most of mine cost no more than £4.99!

It has to be said, some CDs are just as compressed as their digital counterparts, and 95% of the time I listen to music converted to 256kbps AAC for my phone, but I'll still continue to buy CDs and will never get rid of the ones I have.

Yes my Lord When I first started going from buying one 45 a week with my pocket money it was a big jump up to buying LP's at around £5 each. Oh and the amount of time it took in Record Shops , WHSmith , Boots and then HMV and Virgin Mega Stores . Sometimes I just brought a LP because the cover looked so great when I was up to date with Queen's latest release. I think I got albums by Yes , Genesis , Uriah Heap and I can remember taking ages over buying the first Kiss Alive LP because with all that make up on and platform shoes it just looked so exciting .

Yes, I remember when I first had a proper job with proper wages, I'd travel up to Oxford Street in London and spend the day trawling though the huge HMV and Virgin Megastores. We had an Our Price Records locally and I used to spend loads of time in there, and also all the little independent record shops. I remember getting The Miracle CD earlier than the release date, as Woolworths had a pile of them on the counter and they let me buy one. I think I got it on the Friday before it was released on the Monday. Happy days!
