Just seen this posted on Tim Staffell's Instagram page http://instagram.com/p/CPRIVems54H There is an online academic conference on Thursday 27th May, 11am-5pm BST dedicated solely to Queen. It's being live streamed on YouTube, but hopefully it remains up after as I'm unable to make the morning events. The schedule is as follows: Part one11:00 - A selection of academic papers Part two13:00 - Interview with Peter Hince, who toured the world with Queen 1975-1986 Part three14:00 - Interview with Tim Staffell, examining Smile, 'Doin' Alright', Queen (as they began), and Tim's story 14:45 - Interview with Phil Hilborne, examining the role of the guitar in Queen 15:30 - Interview with Simon Bradley, examining the celebrated guitar and the 'Red Special' book he co-wrote with Brian May 16:15 - Interviews with some of the World's Leading Collectors, exploring Queen, artefacts and fandom. Certainly sounds interesting, I'm sure a few regulars here will be tuning in.

The three bit.ly addresses in the image (links written inside an image! ) resolve to these YouTube videos. They're currently set private, but will presumably be made public around the published start times. bit.ly/uqcponebit.ly/uqcptwobit.ly/uqcpthree

Just hoping the live stream is retained into an actual YouTube video afterwards, instead of only being available to view at the selected time.

Sounds interesting, but I'm at a loss to see how this is in any way an 'academic conference'.

Just listened to part one - fairly uneventful papers with nothing of importance to the band itself. The UG student's interpretation of Bohemian Rhapsody was way off, in my opinion.

Doesn't even have to be racist, having any opinion that doesn't align with the student group think is no longer allowed.
Universities have become a bit of a brain washing center these days.... So much so the government are starting to get involved in making sure free speech is respected.

If the first and third papers were just mediocre, the BoRap analysis is almost disturbing to be read out in a so called “academic conference”.

I thought her analysis of what the song represented in terms of what Freddie was going through and the 5 stages of grief (DADBA) was probably spot on. The Kübler-Ross model was introduced in 1969 and the book On Death and Dying was a best seller for years. It's not all that unlikely that Freddie came across a discussion about it during the years 1969-75. If he didn't, and just happened to put together a song that closely correlates to the 5 stages as a reflection of his experiences may be the greatest example of why the Kübler-Ross model still holds up today.

My issue with the analysis as well as others of the same kind out there is that the analysts just apply theories mechanically to real human behaviors. They draw conclusions even before the research is conducted. Her application of the model is oversimplified. These kinds of analysis just become cliche.

I was quite turned off by it and left, didn't even bother coming back for the interviews
