I had that nostalgic thought yesterday that since this is May 2021, and Freddie last appeared on film in May 1991, and last appeared on tape the same month (as far as we are all aware), and there were no official photographs taken beyond this, it really is 30 years since Freddie's last creative input into any project. I'm discounting the paparazzi shots and private photos that have emerged of course, and I'm discounting rumours about what may be in the vaults.
I just thought I'd take a moment to feel a little pang of sadness, and to be grateful for Queen and Freddie's solo output, and forgetting about whatever re-hashed product Queen are putting out these days. Thirty years on, it's still sad that Freddie died too young, and it's still wonderful that we have a catalogue of great music from him.
Rest In Peace Freddie, thanks for the music, and I hope you're enjoying your new life, growing your own pomegranates!

Especially since they used some of Freddie's solo songs.

As far as Made In Heaven is concerned, I don't grudge them reusing some previously released tracks, they made a good job of them, the public expected a full album and that's what they got. But yes, it's not the last album, for me, either. It's as you say a compilation, although credit to them for making it sound as cohesive as was possible.
Ugh I do miss Freddie though.

Made In Heaven was the first Queen album released since I became a fan, so I have a soft spot for it. I still remember walking though my local record store and looking in the Q section as a joke, knowing that there wasn’t ever going to be another Queen album and I had all the ones they’d put out. Imagine my surprise…!
I remember waiting for my mom to come pick me up and I had already cracked open the cassette to read the lyrics and imagine what they sounded like. I still think it’s a perfect album, even if it’s… not.

I thought Made In Heaven was amazing when I first heard it. For a start, it sounded so much better than Innuendo. There were proper drums and Brian's guitar was much more up front again, sounding more like their earlier albums. The only track I wasn't keen on (and still aren't) was YDFM, although, it did have some good bits of guitar in it. I don't play the album in its entirety very much now, but it is SO much better than it could have been.

imo - MIH is a Queen album. sure, 50% of it is reworkings or edits of stuff from previous LPs - MBG, Shove It, BTTL etc, but all of these are significant improvements over the originals. additionally, MIH contains Freddie's final pieces of work. but, both of these important factors aside, the main reason (for me) why MIH should be considered a bona-fide Queen album is because it actually sounds closer to the classic Queen sound than anything from 80-91.
like most, my feelings about MIH can vary a little (mood dependent), but the love and respect and dedication that went into those 3 years' work to arrive at a coda worthy of Queen paid off. and, let's give some credit where it's due - it's a very good LP that once the circumstances are accounted for, "very good" is elevated to excellent in my view.
If MIH had appeared anywhere else in Queen's timeline, everyone (old and new fans alike) would've loved it.
there's a little irony about MIH. when we bookend the Queen studio discography. with "Queen I" we have an album recorded in six-months' studio downtime in 1972, while MIH was recorded during band members' downtime. part of me thinks that the process was so painful for all involved - so much so that the "non-Queen projects" they were involved with post '91 were necessary diversions to help deal with their grief. Lyrically too, the two LPs frequently land on similar ground.

Correct me if I'm wrong, was the TATDOOL video really shot in May '91? I seem to recall reading somewhere that it was shot in Jan '91. Or perhaps that was 'I'm Going Slightly Mad'.

Headlong was shot in 1990 mostly, Slightly Mad was three days in February ‘91, and Days of Our Lives was May ‘91 (Brian was filmed separately later in June as he was in the US). I seem to remember someone – Phoebe maybe? – saying that Slightly Mad was to be the last video Freddie would shoot, but then he decided to do Days.

Headlong was shot in november 1990. Freddie really kinda looked okay since he went all over the place in the video. Innuendo was created in december looking at the slates. Slightly Mad was shot in i believe february and Days Of Our Lives in may. I must say that i like Made In Heaven although Innuendo is 10 times better and is really for a lot of people the very last Queen album. Also one of their best personally. I still remember that Made In Heaven was available in Germany a few days earlier, on november 1st 1995 so i went on my bike through the blistering cold and drove over there to get. How's that for being a Queen fan lol. Nowadays i gave up on the band so my passion will always be the 1971-1995 era.

Ah ok, thanks for clarifying both. So Fred put his final vocal to tape on the 23rd(?) of May, mere weeks after the video.

Rudi said Slightly Mad was to be the last so he planned to have one last interview with Freddie but didn't get the chance. Then came along TATDOOL and he was told specifically not to do too many shoots lest Freddie get exhausted.

Innuendo will always be the last Queen album to me. Made in Heaven is like Led Zeppelin's Coda album, Just a compilation of rarities. Made In Heaven is 10x the album Coda is. And this I say as a huge LZ fanatic.
It's not just leftovers - at least 3/4 of it was recorded in 1994/95 (apart from the lead vocals obviously) and was a lengthy collaboration between four people.
Coda, on the other hand, was mostly assembled by one person and very little post-production work needed to be done.
Not at all a fair comparison.
What is it about Queen "fans" who have such hesitancy in acknowledging anything Queen-related that doesn't directly involve Freddie Mercury as possibly being good ?

As ever, the whole was better than the sum of the parts. There is not a single note on the album I would change.

In hindsight I would’ve loved Let Me In Your Heart Again instead of My Life Has Been Saved, but that’s only because the remake didn’t add anything to the original. At the time I bought the album though I hadn’t heard the original B-side and Let Me In was nearly 20 years away, so I’m picking nits.

I love the title track, and dislike the solo version, but I prefer Freddie's version of IWBtLY with the piano and the lighter mood. The Queen version sees a bit "stalky" to me, but I still like it ... kind of like how enjoy the Beatles "Run for your Life" as a guilty pleasure.

...which, by all accounts, it is. a) I meant that they're similar in that they both are basically rarities albums (though to be fair, they reworked the songs, While Coda just stitches them together) and b) just because I don't think it's a proper Queen album, doesn't mean I don't like it. I really like the album, I wake up to It's A Beautiful Day (reprise), but I just think Innuendo is a more proper album than Made in Heaven

Actually, I quite like LZ's Coda. It's got two of my favourite tracks of theirs on it, namely I Can't Quit You Baby and Wearing and Tearing, and whilst patchy, the rest of it is listenable.
As TRW said though, there was a lot more involvement from Queen in the making of MIH, so in that respect the two can't really be compared.
I guess, technically, it could be said that Innuendo was the last album Queen made with the four of them as a complete band, but MIH certainly deserves to be counted as a Queen album, and a bloody good one!

I believe there were four brand new songs on MiH (writen post-Innuendo?), with three of those new songs being written by Freddie, out of the eleven songs on MIH (excluding the two "hidden" tracks). Similarly, Freddie wrote three of eleven songs on NotW. If MiH is not a real Queen album, then should NotW be considered to not be a real Queen album?

I think you're misunderstanding, I meant it's not very much a proper Queen album, because it's a collection of unused songs (and, granted, songs written with the sole intention of being released after his death and they were fixed up). I didn't bring up who wrote what, because that was irrelevant to the big picture

Personally though, I just think Innuendo is their last album as Queen, y'know, with all 4 members This argument continues to make no sense, as all four members of Queen are on every track of Made In Heaven.
Forgive me if I sound antagonistic, but you're really digging a hole here based on some sort of unfounded ideology that the album is less of an album because one of the band members died before it could be finished. You insist you don't want to go into the history of who wrote what and when, but the reality is it's no less a Queen album than any of the others purely on the fact that a) Freddie wrote more songs on it than many previous Queen albums, and b) he sings on every track.
There are entire songs on their first seven albums that he did not at all contribute to. Maybe those shouldn't be classified as Queen albums then?
What is your definition of a Queen album ? Is it in line with what the rest of the world would call a Queen album ?
You describe Made In Heaven as "a collection of unused songs (and, granted, songs written with the sole intention of being released after his death and they were fixed up)." Not only is that inaccurate as that doesn't describe all of the tracks, but going by your definition that should validate its status as a Queen album like any other because those particular tracks were created with the sole intention of being finished and released - unlike Coda, which you initially compared it to. The only thing those two albums have in common is that they were released after a band member died, but that's where the comparisons end.

It was just recorded differently to the preceding ones, and they were all present as a band for some of the recordings. As we know, Brian wasn't present for much of the initial recording of the Sheer Heart Attack album, but added his guitar parts after coming out of hospital. Does that make SHA any less of a Queen album?
