This is the chronicle of the concert in Monterrey of the Mexican magazine, CONECTE number 236.
Unfortunately, the journalist has been very simple, very limited in his handling of the chronicle, and it does not seem that he had full knowledge of the songs.
For example, mention that they played "Coming Soon", doesn't remember another song from "The Game" they played ...
He says he talked to Freddie ... "some things", what a description!
And in the end, not his fault, but it is foreboding, like a potential Nostradamus "we hope nothing negative has happened in Puebla."
The English translation has cost a bit to Mr. Google because there are some terms of use in Mexican Spanish.
Here we go!
In Monterrey
¡¡Queen live!!!
Editorial
Finally, after thousands of problems over two decades, rock entered our country. It was not easy because there were many problems, many doubts, but it was done.
And it has been Queen, one of the sacred monsters of international rock, who has opened the doors.
The importance of this not only at the national level, but at the global level, is so significant that we can only make them aware. as always and over many years and various publications we have been proclaiming it, of such an event.
Hopefully and everything continues from strength to strength, because more rock concerts are coming with groups of great importance.
We have confidence in most of you because the Mexican knows when to do the right things.
For now, the Queen group leaves its mark and precedent.
Thank you boys for trust in us!
AT THE UNIVERSITY STADIUM OF MONTERREY
QUEEN
LIVE
By Jose Luis Pluma Special Envoy
Monterrey. Nuevo León. We reached the city without any setback. The weather was frying in twenty-six degrees centigrade.
We immediately started to sweat but Fabián, Camarillo, Juan Ramirez, Fco. Javier and Noemí were ready for the long-awaited Queen concert.
On the way to the Monterrey University Stadium where the concert would take place, the row of
cars and the deployment of personnel, it was endless; the event was an hour away and thousands of rockers from all over were still arriving. As we realized, they came from Saltillo, Nuevo Laredo, Torreón and other surrounding cities. Nobody wanted to miss the debut of a rock group, world famous, in lands Mexican. The dream came true after twenty illusory years.
Arrival at the Stadium
While in the stadium we looked for the entrance and we saw how six or seven people tried to jump over a fence to enter the premises; some made it and some did not. However, we think that because of them then everything falls apart. It costs them nothing to save a hundred or two hundred pesos and avoid these attitudes that denigrate rock.
That was how we got to the indicated door, we were trained as good spectators, too, and after passing a review with Security, we entered. Already inside we saw. About fifty thousand people! All calm, happy and waiting for the concert. Upstairs, a town of 100.00 pesos, it was completely full; In the middle of the 250.00-peso location, it remained almost full and below, in the grass, the 350.00-peso location, there was a large audience, but not completely full.
Supertramp and Kiss announced
Ten minutes before nine at night, the famous Monterrey character Lacho Pedraza appears, who declares: "Monterrey is the rock capital of Mexico" and then introduces José Rota, businessman who, after receiving , tells us: · 'They told me that it was impossible and you have made it possible. " Later
Lacho warns that if everything goes well soon, in late '81 or early '82, "we will have Supertramp and Kiss. People applaud and cheer for the news.
For our part, in good hours We greet Mr. Cabero from Radio Capital, Mr. Fernández Zepeda from Radio Variedades and Franyutti from Heraldo de México. We were downstairs, without pushing of any kind, without visibility and sound problems and living with completely calm people.
The begining
Punctuality was not very English, but the stadium lights go out. everyone yells and the show starts at 9:18. The awesome sound. Suddenly the modules of the lights go up and it looked like the take off of some UFOs. Incredible. When the lights come up, where there was a ceiling that covered the entire stage, the four musicians appear.
Freddie Mercury in white and black leather jacket with his short microphone in hand; Brian May in a black vest and pants with his unmistakable handmade guitar; John Deacon in a pastel green jumpsuit and Roger Taylor without a shirt and pink Mexican pants.
The concert
After the impression caused by the lights, in full color and nuanced by the reflectors, the group begins its set with a series of well-known songs such as "We Will Rock You", well executed instrumentally and vocally, but in its fast version. Freddie then says, "Are you ready for Rock'n 'Roll?" Those who understand yell a "yeeaah". "Coming Soon" comes, then she takes off her jacket. Freddie goes to the piano to play "Play the Game", people recognize her and shout in approval.
Right away- "Somebody To Love" comes up in a version that, in particular, I didn't like very much. But then we realized that the high tones are from Taylor and May (Deacon doesn't do backing vocals).
Freddie, who dances as if he is marching, thanks the saying: "Alright ... Thank you ... Alright"
Brian May at the piano
Then "Killer Queen-A love Car" and "Get Down Make love" appear, in the latter Brian May makes his guitar "howl" and the lights play him in an incredible way (it seems that they are handled by computer because everything is according to music).
They play some LP "The Game" (which we don't remember) and at the end they say in English "They sure understand." Then Brian goes to the piano and so they give us "Save Me" (he had the guitar on his legs). Then there is "Now l'm Here" and "Death On two Legs"
Great!
Dedication to Mexican girls
"The next song is for Mexican girls ... fat bottom girls" says Freddie showing his chest where an "S" stands for Superman. Then Brian May greets with good Spanish: "Good Night Mexico" ... are you happy? ... OKAY. We are from London, England, and for us it is the first time in Mexico ... Thank you ... Thank You very much ... This song is for you ..." Take the acoustic guitar and play "Love of my Life "... just!
Then comes "Keep Yourself Alive" where there is a solo on drums and guitar. "Flash Gordon" appears which sounds like the album but incomplete and is celebrated by the people.
The end
Freddie takes off his shirt, Brian goes to the piano and does a little improvisation that doesn't sound familiar. Then again we see that something changes: both Freddie and Brian take acoustic guitars and begin the chords of "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" (the requirements are made by May with electric guitar and not the same as the album in its entirety).
The still warm night is splendid and Queen closes with -Bohemian Rhapsody. The chorus part is a tape, they disappear but the lights do the show. It's everyone's favorite. It turns out great. They go.
Come back twice
The and shouts of the assistants is not to ask for another. They just light matches and make a little noise. But the group comes out and is applauded (here it is worth mentioning how little enthusiastic the Monterrey or Northerners are for this and that perhaps it is beneficial).
They play "Another Bite The Dust" and "Sheer Heart Attack".
Freddie dances very peculiar, but he sings super, which is ultimately what makes him shine. They go back in but come out and sing "We Will Rock you" and leave.
They return again, under the same conditions of the present public. They perform the long-awaited “We Are The Champions.” We also sing as the floodlights illuminate the stadium staff. The finale is present.
The balance and our talk with Queen
Lacho Pedraza gives instructions and that's how it is done. Unfortunately, a ramp, which does not lift much height, is overcome by the weight of the people (not by asking for autographs or running away as published in a Monterrey newspaper and in "La Prensa" in Mexico). of the two guys who went there, what else (in the aforementioned newspapers they talk about the wounded and they even say names).
We go with Queen. They all look pale but ready to receive congratulations. We shake Brian May's hand (he does it strongly), we deliver a Connect to Roger Taylor, I talk about some things with Freddie who brings giant bodyguards, and I tell John Deacon we'll see you in Mexico. They get in the cars and drive off. We hope that nothing negative has happened in Puebla.
Next issue they will read it.
