Freddie didn't like to talk about his past, particularly his family and the fact that he wasn't born in England. So no, there's nothing out there with any substance (that I've come across).

Freddie didn't want to talk much about his family because he respected their privacy. He didn't want them to be dragged through the press as so easily could have happened. The other members of Queen didn't talk about their family at the height of their fame either, come to think of it. It was for this reason that Freddie didn't come out about his diagnosis until the very last minute. I get the impression that he wasn't ashamed of himself or anything, but he knew it was highly likely that his family would be forced into awkward situations with the press. It's remarkable actually, that he managed to protect them from the press.

Totally agree with jif. To be on topic, there were a few occasions he would drop a line or two about his family. But he would not specifically comment on his family members. Here is an example from his interview with Mary Turner. credit to ultimatequeen.co.ukMary: Yeah, indeed. OK, my final question is, your birthplace is Zanzibar Freddie: Yes, that's right Mary: What were you parents doing there? Freddie: They were freaking out (Mary laughs). But they were working for the, for the government at the time, my father was working for the government and Zanzibar was part of the commonwealth at the time and so he was a civil servant and he worked over there and there you are. I never, I was, at a very early age I was, when I was about seven I was put in boarding school, in India, so I mean I went from Zanzibar to India for a while and then came back to England and a very upheaval of an upbringing (Mary: sounds like it) which just, which seems to have worked, I guess Mary: I guess so Freddie: In a way it sort of made, I was like put in an environment where I had to sort of fend for myself at a very early age, which I think was a, a good, a good, what would you call it, a good, I got a very, a good grasp of how to be responsible at a very early age, and I think that's, that's what's made me into such a fiend (laughs) Mary: Well, you're a good fiend. Thank you very much Freddie: OK *** I think it's unfair to accuse Freddie of hiding the fact that he's not born in Britain. Actually in so many news reports or band introduction or fans club magazine articles concerning birth information, Zanzibar would definitely be mentioned. Indian was not mentioned as much, but still a lot of times. In early days when they were still establishing their identity and fame, Zanzibar-born was almost like a selling point which added exotic flavor. A few convenient examples here   |
