Let's say you are the God of Music and you can put the 4 members of Queen, in 1973/1974, in whatever rock group you want. Considering the skills of Roger, Brian, John and Freddie, where do you send them?
My choices...
Freddie will sing in: Rush (Geddy will only play bass, they can play everything, also Freddie's things) John will play bass in: Aerosmith (he could stop Steven and Joe's fights for everything) Brian will play guitar in: Pink Floyd (he can play Gilmour's role, and write different things, without fighting with Waters) Roger will play drums in: Led Zeppelin (he could bring them to 2000 and beyond, maybe today)
PS The original members above disappear, simply... so don't say "But Bonzo..." et cetera

All the big bands have in common that they have a unique sound. And as soon as you take an element out you get a different beast. I think Queen is just perfect with the 4 of them and I can't see any of them being better in another band.

The alternate reality I wonder about sometimes is the one where Freddie never met Brian and Roger.
Would they have carried on with Smile without Tim and someone else? Would they have carried on as a duo with Roger particularly picking up more vocals with a n other bassist
Would Freddie have found success as a soloist? Would he have found another band and become successful?
And what of John? Would he have joined a band or would he have started his own studio?
Or could the magic ONLY have happened in this reality?

I think things happen because they're meant to. Call it fate, destiny, or whatever you like, but something pulled the people together who made Queen, Rush, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, etc, etc, and I don't think any of those bands would have happened any other way.
It amazes me to think back over my own life, to points where something changed and created a totally different life path. We can trace things right back to a point in our childhood that started us on the path to where we are now - one different turn and your whole life might have changed.
If we take Freddie, had he not left India when he did, he would never have been on the market with Roger, etc, etc. And if Brian's dad hadn't replaced the fireplace...

You need to drop them into bands BEGINNING around the same time.

And if Brian's dad hadn't replaced the fireplace... I think it was "AN" old fireplace, not necessarily "OUR" old fireplace. Sourced from a skip or something, like the Deacy amp circuit...

1. I am NOT old. Just older. And I'm nobody's Fireplace except my own. 2. Removing David Gilmour from the known universe just so Brian could be in Pink Floyd? Blasphemy!

I'd love for there to have been a production of Rocky Horror starring them.
Freddie as Frank-N-Furter, of course. Roger as Riff-Raff, his growly voice and ability to hit the high notes would work beautifully.
I can't decide if John or Brian would be better as Brad.

In a very alternative world. . .
Neil Peart would be the drummer for Status Quo!
Meg White would be the drummer in Rush!
Les Claypool would be the Bass player in Chic. . .
Bernard Edwards would join Queen in 1980 and John Deacon would become rhythm guitarist after the departure of Brian May. They would go on to produce a lot of Bites The Dust and side one of Hot Space type material.
Brian May would join Metallica instead of Kirk Hammett, successfully auditioning with a blistering version of Stone Cold Crazy!
The Downward Spiral era Nine Inch Nails would be the only outlet for everything Kate Bush ever wrote
Kate Bush would join Tool after Maynard James Keenan leaves to be part of a three part vocal harmony trio with Rob Halford and Mel Torme singing 1940/50’s Doowop covers!
There’s more but I’ve run out of whatever I was smoking!

i love this thread, but I'm just going to repost from here: queenchat.boards.net/thread/1293/smile-opinions♦ In an parallel universe, Smile catch the "peace n love boat" at inception - becoming commercially successful. Freddie never joins (ends up as a graphic artist. ♦ Smile ride the whole psychedelia train but evolve well in advance of their contemporaries. ♦ With Brian's guitar and electronics expertise, Smile steal a march on Floyd - their Smile: Like You Mean It 1973 opus (cover design by: Farrokh Bulsara & Storm Thorgerson ) remains in the top 40 worldwide album charts for ten years. ♦ Floyd are consigned to the annals of forgotten curios and DSOTM never happens. ♦ David Gilmour joins Sparks - who end up as support on the Smile: From Ear To Ear (1978 World Stadiums tour) - ending with 10 consecutive nights at Wembley Stadium. Just a thought.

Totally irrelevant topic, but if things just went a little bit different back in the day, Roger had been the drummer of Genesis and Brian would have joined Sparks.

For Genesis, Roger would've been a square peg in a round hole. He's definitely not the type of drummer that would have succeeded with them. Roger's much more of a "fundamentals" drummer, compared to how razor-precise Phil was back when Peter was the frontman. Genesis was also cycling through drummers quite a lot before Phil, so I don't think Roger would've stuck around too long. Roger himself even said that he didn't care to practice much at all, and that he was never looking to be one of the best drummers. He played exactly how Brian and John needed him to, and never much more than that. Thankfully, things went exactly how they were supposed to.

Roger will play drums in: Led Zeppelin (he could bring them to 2000 and beyond, maybe today) I can really only comment on drummers so I've gotta say- Roger's no John Bonham. The quality of LZ's iconic drum parts would definitely decrease, and I feel like a lot of parts would have gotten simplified live.

Ted IMHO, they needed to go through something and that's what they did. Some people got it, some didn't. Where would they be without experiments?
