and so the dutch newspaper De Gelderlander was inspired by The Miracle to create this picture. The four heads are the four leaders of the parties making up the government-coalition, with prime minister Rutte starting his 4th term.

And I still think the original cover is one of Queen's best.

That's awful, the Queen version only worked because John and Brian were looking sideways into the camera.
I went to the record store on day of release and was quite shocked by the album cover but then utterly fascinated by it. I remember photocopying the I Want It All single cover and cutting out the 'heads' in an unsuccessful attempt to recreate it. It was a very good job by Richard Gray back in 1989.
I also thought the artwork for the Miracle singles was quite clever in the way they teased the full image. I Want It All had the original photos, Breakthru showed just the eyes, The Invisible Man had the four-head image obscured behind lettering. The Miracle finally showed the full image but in negative.
Scandal was an exception and bizarrely had a picture taken at the video shoot of the previous single.

That's awful, the Queen version only worked because John and Brian were looking sideways into the camera. Yes, the sideways glance thing... the slight angle of the outside faces made this Japanese artwork below so strikingly similar. In the "making of" video for The Miracle album cover, they said one of the members saw a poster with a similar image. I'm wondering if it was Freddie who came across this artwork while in Japan in 1986, knowing his love for Japanese art.  |

Seeing that Japanese piece of art reminded me of a painting I saw in a French museum in August 2019. Same idea as the Japanese one, looking sideways on both sides.  |

Ahh... that led me to a quick Google search and there are several examples of the Christian Trinity depicted this way. I guess any one of them could have given them the idea. |

I also think the Queen version works because of how well Richard Gray blended the hairstyles. A few extra Brian 'curls' were added digitally to fill in the area above Freddie. It wouldn't have worked if one of them was bald like in that Dutch image.
Another weird point about the Miracle image is that Freddie isn't looking straight at the camera but slightly above and to the right of it. It's easier to see this if you look at the album cover in a mirror.
