Anyone grab this yet ? Apparently it's got unseen photos from the Ridge Farm rehearsals for ANATO and from a UK tour rehearsal, as well as shots from their last Budokan gig on 5/8/85. Can anyone attest to this !?

Yeah, I have it. It has photos from everything you mentioned, although it didn't specify which date for the Budokan in 1985. Maybe someone could tell by their outfits? Not sure. He also mentioned he shot the meet-and-greet with fans at the Budokan, although those photos didn't make it. There's also much more, including the Bohemian Rhapsody video shoot, Hyde Park, and Milton Keynes. A while ago a lot of new photos from Asanuma were uploaded to Getty Images (in two stages, I think), and some of those newer photos are included. There are some shots in addition to those, and I believe they were previously unseen, although I don't know for sure. For example, there's one full-page close up of Brian at Ridge Farm with his head down playing the Hank Marvin guitar that I'd never seen before (from the same moment as the one available on Getty, but from a much better angle). I was hoping there would be some anecdote of what he was playing on that guitar, since there are so many pictures around, but there was none. Asanuma writes that the photos taken at Scorpio Studios were not staged photos, but were taken while they were actually recording from the other side of the window: "While recording Bohemian Rhapsody, Roger said, 'I can't sing this high,' but Freddie shot back, 'Do it!'"

Are the UK tour rehearsal photos also from '75 ?

Are there photos from Edinburgh 02/09/76 show inside which were used for ADATR gatefold or similar ones? As I remember these photos were taken by Asanuma.

Ah, I might have to clarify that. Asanuma said that he was invited by Brian to Elstree Studios in 1975, where they were "rehearsing while also filming the Bohemian Rhapsody music video." So, there are shots that are clearly for the music video (the opera bits), but there are also pics of them performing, which were most likely for the video as well, but perhaps also included occasional moments of them going through other songs. Asanuma: "I was there from 8 pm to 2 or 3 am, but the band kept on shooting even after that. I thought at the time, while doing the photoshoot, 'Maybe this band is going to make it big.'" Asanuma had exchanged phone numbers with Brian at Ridge Farm, and Brian personally invited him to Scorpio and Elstree. By early '76, he was only invited to shoot through the band's publicist and stopped hearing from Brian directly.

Yeah, Asanuma had revealed at an event a while ago that his uncredited shot of John, Roger, and Freddie was used for the A Day at the Races gatefold, but he doesn't mention that in his book. There are photos from Edinburgh, but none from '39. There's a photo by Asanuma in this book with all four members performing '39 from Hyde Park, though, and it looks similar to the shot of Brian that was used for the gatefold. Asanuma says the shot of Brian was taken by a British photographer because he couldn't squeeze all four of them together in Edinburgh, but it might actually be a composite of two Asanuma shots from those two shows.

That's when you've "made it big" - there's now a chain of command, no doubt on the advice of a good manager. Fascinating insight.

His shot of John, Roger, and Freddie has to be either from Edinburgh or Hyde Park. Maybe they didn't end up in the book because there are copyright issues surrounding the album cover, and memories of the details have been lost over time ?

Maybe they didn't end up in the book because there are copyright issues surrounding the album cover, and memories of the details have been lost over time ? The John, Roger, and Freddie shot was definitely from Edinburgh, and I remember you pointed that out for me in the photos thread. John's wearing a black top so it can't be Hyde Park, where he wore white. It was an interesting omission from the book, though, since he started telling the story last year, and even this month I see some evidence that he was discussing it during a promotional event for his book. I think there's a chance Asanuma was confusing the Edinburgh and Hyde Park shows when the story was first told in November 2020. He probably remembers being too close to the stage in Edinburgh to take a photo of all four of them, and remembered a British photographer that night working the same show, and figured that's how they got Brian in there because he didn't have a photo of Brian from that angle. But you can tell from Brian's outfit that it's not from Edinburgh, and that he's wearing the outfit from Hyde Park, and that because of the similar shot in his book, it very well could be his own! Maybe he has corrected his story by now.

Thanks for your info! Is it possible for you to show us this Brian's 'similar' shot here? I don't think I'm allowed to show anything from the book. But just in case it's a photo that's been seen before, I'll describe it: all four members are visible during '39, although John and Roger are cut off at the knees by the stage and bass drum, and Freddie from the hips down by a monitor. Brian is off to the side with his mouth half-open and smiling while looking over at the other three, and unlike the inner sleeve, his legs and feet are fully visible and not blocked by any equipment. It's a full two-page spread in this book.
