Before I post my list, a little word about the description of Novelty Record.
Novelty Records are a particular genre of pop record, a novelty song is NOT simply a comedy record, rather a type of song built upon some form of novel concept, such as a gimmick, a piece of humor, or a sample/parody of popular culture.
1. Car 67 - Driver 67 (an absolutely understated masterpiece. shoulda been a massive hit - but Logo Records failed to press enough copies)
2. Up Je T'aime - Frankie Howerd & June Whitfield (one of my favourite comedians doing what he does best)
3. Galaxy Song - Monty Python (a stunningly funny infommercial for Space - factually awe-inspiring)
4. They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa! - Napoleon XIV (genuis only matched by its B-side)
5. Margaritaville - Jimmy Buffett (this guy created a one-man empire from one song; hotels, restaurants, airport buger bars, retirement villages etc with annual turnover of around $2 billion)
6. Classical Muddly - Portsmouth Sinfonia (i defy you to not simultaneously laugh and cringe at this, an idea that spawned in 1970 but reached it's musical zenith here around 1981)
7. Anarchy In The UK - Frank Sidebottom (who continued to record in this genre until his death in 2009)
8. Only The End Of The World Again - Distaster Area (from Restaurant at the End of the Universe EP)
9. You're The One That I Want - Hilda Baker & Arthur Mullard (just genius - in every parody way possible)
10. The Lone Ranger - Quantum Jump (a sort of Stoner's Brokeback Mountain)
Notable Mention:
Captain Beaky And His Band - Keith Michell
