I was reading the book Queen All The Songs by Benoit Clerc and there as an interesting bit I'd like to share with you.
In his write up about Machines he claims that "careful listeners can discover samples of older Queen songs, including Ogre Battle and Flash." He also notes that Mack hid the samples. I've listened to this song countless times and have never noticed this detail. Is there credibility to it? Can someone help me here? Or is this false information referencing a special remix version?
Thanks so much.

It's Machine instrumental version. The Ogre Battle, Flash and even Goin’ Back bits are around 3:20.

Thanks!
I do not recommend this book. This isn't the first time the author has been wrong or misleading. He clearly didn't fact check everything. And not to sound like an elitist, but he doesn't come across as a genuine fan. It's been a fairly disappointing read.

I felt the same way when I read it, and I’m not just saying that because of my book. It was poorly written, poorly edited, and you’re right, he just didn’t sound like a fan. (I was critical at times in my book – now sometimes embarrassingly so – but I’m still a fan.) It also seems like the “[Band/Artist] All the Songs” books were written like an assembly line, and, weirdly, all the authors have French-sounding names. Not a dig at the French, but just something I noticed! I will say the books are very nicely designed which, as a former book designer, makes a world of difference to me.

Oh yes, the books are very nicely designed. My brother-in-law bought me the Led Zeppelin book so I had an inkling that the book would be gorgeous. And while I enjoyed the Zeppelin book I wouldn't know any better if there were factual errors. I don't know them like I know Queen. So it was very disappointing to find that attention to detail was not their forte, and it's more or less a cash grab. Makes me not want to return to the Zeppelin book. I just don't trust this series. Your book on the other hand was meticulous and detailed to the brim. Yes, you put your personal criticisms in there, but it was still an enjoyable read. I often still go back to your book to fact check things and so forth. I might have said it to you before, but thank you. You helped a young Queen fan gain so much knowledge and further appreciation for the band.

I second that - the criticisms, whilst I sometimes don't agree, add a completely human dimension and are very welcome. Personal views and preferences really open songs up and allow you to listen to them with new ears.

Complete Works is far more reliable and useful. I'm not saying out of politeness or anything, it's just simple truth. Though All the Songs is beautifully designed, there isn't any new picture. All the elaborate design makes it too heavy to turn to, not to mention all the errors.

I think that's because it IS a series of French music books ("La totale") translated in English. I own the Bob Dylan one and I enjoy it but I don't feel I could trust the Queen one... Georg, I remember a loooong time ago on QOL (I went under the nickname ZakRoyen) us having a discussion about my desire to translate you book in French. I was willing to do it for free... and I wish I had done it then

It would have all been for naught, though, as I believe the publishing company was then bought up by another one, and I’d gotten lost in the shuffle, so… anyway, I didn’t know it was a series of French translated to English books – interesting!
