This is just a heads up that Channel 5 here in the UK are showing a documentary called Queen: A Rock History - Part 1. According to the blurb it says that the documentary series illuminates the truth of how Freddie, Brian, Roger and John were brought together and created the global phenomenon that was, and is, Queen. How good this will be is anyones guess. Its on this Saturday 30th April at 9.20 and is 1 hour and 50 minutes long. Queen: A Rock History

Thanks for the heads up. Could be interesting, and if that's just part one, it seems a fairly extensive documentary.

As with most Ch5 documentaries, I’m not holding out much hope… I’m sure Gambo will make an appearance somewhere!!

In this case the whole story starts in 1979 with just a nod to the origin story….

Queen: A Rock History Part 2The show summaries on that link appear to me to be mixed up. At least that is what is seems like to me. No doubt Gambo will show up in this one as well lol

Very strange that it started in '79. Last minute rights issues with the 1st part maybe? It was a typical Channel 5 patchwork job but you know what, I enjoyed hearing KT Tunstall and other's take on Queen stuff. Nice to hear some fresh perspectives. Ratty is always worth listening to. The vocal coach dude had some interesting stuff to say about certain songs as well. Also there were many interesting stills used that I'd not seen before. But the usual shoddiness of course, Lesley-Ann Jones as usual getting her facts completely all over the place or just plain wrong, the repeated not-Knebworth (not even Queen) stage footage and so on. And they were clearly skirting rights payments with all the pixellated youtube rips and ultra-short Queen song snippets. Watched it right through though. Looking forward to finding out how the group started out, next week

This wasn't bad actually, when Gambo appeared talking about AIDS I was waiting for the 'I'm doing everything with everyone' Freddie quote but thankfully he didn't say it. As oreno says, Ratty is always great to listen to and calls it as it was.
A few mistakes started to creep in towards the end, had to laugh at Lesley Ann Jones thinking GSTQ was played live at the end of every show.
Interesting that someone who attended both Wembley and Knebworth says Wembley was better - Queen's revisionist folklore claims that Knebworth was one of the best gigs of their careers.

I'm looking forward to seeing it, but I do wonder how many more of these types of documentaries they can actually do. The story is not going to change so they can only retell it in slightly different ways, showing mostly the same old clips. I lost count of the number of times they showed that pic of a young Freddie with the teeth in that last one which was on the BBC.

It would be great if there was a documentary on the band's live career. There's so many areas that haven't been talked about or things in not much detail. Their iconic outfits, lightning rigs and how amazing they truly were!
I just feel any documentaries covering a lengthy time period are really just going to follow the albums and the band members' personalities.
Not sure though if there is much mainstream appeal for this...

Anyone know any TV execs to pitch the idea to? 😁

It's strange that almost all documentaries when talking about the live show they always focus on Freddie being the 'ultimate showman', the dazzling light shows, the smoke/dry ice etc. But very few of them actually mention that the four of them were one of the greatest and tightest live acts the world has ever seen, if not the greatest.

Yeah it's not just the lack of the band but they also had a great road crew with some great stories. There's so much to say that hasn't been said on screen before

God bless David Wigg, finally someone has the balls to say the WWRY musical storyline is completely cringeworthy: 'Freddie would've hated it!'

hello, dear folks, my question to you about this documentary is have there been any new film / moving pictures bits?, or is it good and worth watching only because of the interviews and some rare photographs?

Can't remember any new footage at all, much of it is low res/pixellated. Definitely worth watching for the interviews though. There were a couple of photos I'd never seen before - one of the band receiving an award where Deaky looks weird/ugly. Another one of Roger where it looks like he has 'coke nose'.

Part 2 ( actually part 1 because part 1 started in 79) was set up on my sky box through series link. It’s actually recording when comedy goes horribly wrong…. When scheduling (or rights issues) goes horribly wrong more like…..

Weird! I wonder what's happened to it? Hi Everyone, All is not lost. Part 2 was actually on last Saturday, Part 1 for some reason isn’t on tonight despite being advertised. If you have a Smart TV Part 1 and Part 2 are on My5.
