We all know how much of an influence Queen had on Metallica. They've done a cover of SCC, with Hetfield performing it in the Tribute concert, James even mentioned being inspired by Brian's layered guitar sound when coming up with parts for Nothing Else Matters. I thought that was the extent of the influence til I saw these videos:
Thought I'd share this guy's video.

Similarly, I've always thought the intro of Megadeth's 'Peace Sells' is very similar to the intro jam from the Montreal version of 'Keep Yourself Alive'. Dave Mustaine is a big Queen fan and that concert was available on VHS in the early 80's. 'Peace Sells' was released in 1986.

Thanks to both of you for posting the videos. Some interesting similarities between the respective songs. I've seen and read that James Hetfield in particular is a pretty big fan of Brian. I've always quite liked Metallica's SCC cover.

I've seen and read that James Hetfield in particular is a pretty big fan of Brian. And it shows. I saw a pic of him and Kirk holding and playing the Old Lady, and they had that "Holy shit, dude. We're holding Brian May's guitar!" look on their face

I have been listening to Queen and Metallica for quite some years now, but I never noticed it...
I would say that 'Hit the Lights' and 'The Four Horsemen' (What a kick ass song is that!?!), are inspired by, but the guitar in 'Phantom Lord' is a straight copy!
I'm not a musician nor a guitar player myself, but aren't some of these standard chord progressions used throughout history? I don't mind a bit of inspiration and not even copying, as long as something good is being done with it.
