Hi all haven’t been here for some time due to job obligations, but had to share this thought. Sorry if it was already brought up, or well known, then admins can delete it. So I was thinking about Freddie’s affection for Lennon and we all know Song for Lennon is on Hot Space. The cover reminds of the Let it Be four-square formation and he put himself on the same spot as John (first box). I always wondered about Deacon’s missing eye and attributed it to crazy design and whatnot but now it makes sense seing Paul’s eye is in shadows. The instrument roles also fit (bass top right, drums bottom left, guitars bottom right). This could be a stretch, but if you look at the inlay, the half-lit portraits are very similar to With the Beatles album. This looks like a dead giveaway that the cover pays hommage to the Beatles too… Anyway, that was my train of thought I wanted to share. cheers all!!!

Nice spot! Even if none of that is right, I still prefer your thoughts to "it's based on Warhol" or "it's a rip-off of (paste similar artwork here)"
Very interesting!

well, "Life Is Real" - I often wondered if this song for John was influenced by the infamous Dakota tapes recorded by John Lennon from 1975 to 1979 when he went back to studio in August 1979. There is "Life Is Real" (which was the working progress title of the piano version of "Real Love" and the acoustic version "Girls And Boys"- same melody, different lyrics. My guess is that Lennon was so excited to record with a band in August 1979 that he wanted to try everything. Since with his Geffen contract the album had a dead-line (sic) and Yoko recorded half of the song, I guess he saved the "piano" songs for the next album (besides "Watching The Wheels"). Thus, I wonder if he would have kept the piano arrangement or recorded 2 different version : a piano one and an acoustic one. He leaved some hand written lyrics/notes about the song arrangement he had in mind and referred to "Imagine" sound. Brian May recorded a George Harrison-soaring guitar solo-like on "Life Is Real". But before" Life Is Real" there was "The Game" which has a kind of "Sexy Sadie"-piano like- by John Lennon. It's odd, and kind of sad, that Bowie recorded with Lennon, Elton John too, Mick Jagger (Too Many Cooks), Harry Nilsson, and Freddy apparently never went in the studio to record with John who had another album planned with recording date booked, but Yoko was pregnant and Sean was born in 1975. I wonder if because of Fred Seaman, Freddy would have got some Lennon's demos tapes at the times; if he listen to these demos. At the time "Hot Space" came out, Lennon was shot to death (Freddy played "Imagine" in concert), a lot of tapes have "disappeared"; perhaps Freddie was able to lo listen to some Lennon bootlegs. I read John Lennon's complete playboy interview, he talks about the Clash, Neil Young's song "Hey Hey, My My", Bob Dylan's infamous Jesus tour, but don't mention F.Mercury. But there are a lot of piano melodies magnificent recorded by Freddie and Queen that I'm almost sure that Lennon would have listened to several Queen albums. Thus I'm sure Lennon could have been influenced during his househusband years 1975-79 by Queen's music, especially F.Mercury's piano melodies. regarding "The Game" artwork, it precedes "Menlove Avenue" Lennon posthumous album in 1986 with the Andy Warhol portrait (even though this Andy Warhol draft of Lennon was done years before) Because of the color, quite flashy of "Hot Space", even if they didn't get an Andy Warhol typical painting treatment (did they contact Warhol?) you are definitely right about the Let It Be cover. There is also the White Album Wharholian photo series of the 4 Fabs even if this is not an album cover. Here is Andy Warhol design which was re-used later in 1986 for John Lennon "Menlove Avenue" album : this is the closest color-Warholien-look to the "Hot Space" cover. My guess is that for "Hot Space" that they could color their faces, but not to Warholish to avoid a trial or some problems. We have no trace they try to contact Andy Warhol ?

i genuinely don;t see it. there are thousands of LP covers that have band photos on them, and (probably) hundreds with the 4-split arrangement. HS is no way a tribute to the LIB cover. If you really want to pitch it anywhere, it's much much closer to Kiss' Dynasty. And - if we're being brutally honest, the music genre switch on HS - well it's more akin to the Dynasty content that LIB. Kiss just beat Queen to the dance punch.

Never noticed it myself and I too think it was done on purpose. The Kiss example is very far fetched and there is a better example of another record I don't know the name of having the four colourful squares in the same position as HS has. It was a "Best Of" definitely.

There was a parody of Hot Space in the style of Blur's best of album in the documentary "Killer Queen" but it's gone from YouTube..

The Kiss example is very far fetched and there is a better example of another record I don't know the name of having the four colourful squares in the same position as HS has. It was a "Best Of" definitely. i think you're both missing my point. i wasn't implying it [HS] was a Kiss thing. My point was that HS definitely wasn't a Beatles/Lennon thing at all. The reason I put the Kiss reference in was to highlight the absurdity of HS's cover being a Lennon/Beatles tribute. As I said there are many, many LP covers with that four-split look - and on that basis alone, then the Dynasty thing works equally well - except it doesn't as (just like Let It Be) it was not the inspiration for HS cover. I found this that appears to give Freddie's reasons for his cover design: The album cover, Freddie’s idea, is one based loosely on an Andy Warhol screen print style, showing the four members in separate quarters. Mercury had given a revealing interview in 1981 in which he pointed out that the group didn’t tend to socialize so much anymore since they were in each other’s pockets for work purposes, and that they arrived at concerts in separate limousines.www.udiscovermusic.com/behind-the-albums/queen-hot-space/so nothing to do with the Beatles then? The concept may have been all about the band members and their individual separation(s) from each other. and again - just for clarity: I am not suggesting (and never have) that HS has any connection to Kiss. But, even the inlay in the top post has a correspondingly similar Kiss cover. TBH - you can read anything into almost anything if you want to. But it doesn't make it right, does it? Now the "separation" thing may also be wrong, but at least there's an article to back it up - and the article does refer to a Freddie interview.

"The best of blur" isn't an album. It's an EP. One sided. And includes a cover of John Cake's 4:24

Another similarity I have noticed now with Hot Space and Let It Be album covers is the ordering of each member.
Hot Space Top left: Freddie - vocalist Top right: John - bassist Bottom left: Roger - drummer Bottom right: Brian - guitarist
Let It Be Top left: John - vocalist Top right: Paul - bassist Bottom left: Ringo - drummer Bottom right: George - guitarist
I know John and Paul shared the vocals on Beatles' tracks overall, but certainly with the earlier ones John took more and it was more 50/50 after 1966. Without saying John was a singer in the Beatles it's hard to say what role he had in one word. He was a backup guitarist and his keyboard playing was inferior to Paul's.
I've never got it with why Brian isn't next to Freddie on Hot Space (because surely you'd have the two most well-known members on the top?). Maybe what I've just said is coincidental but this is the one album where you could say there was more tribute to The Beatles in terms of what has been said on here and being experimental in music styles.

He was a backup guitarist and his keyboard playing was inferior to Paul's. John and Paul were equally lead vocalists, Paul's other role being bassist, while Johns was primarily as rhythm guitarist. if the alluded similarity is between HS and LIB, then the lead vocals (on that Lp - as with most other Beatles stuff) were evenly shared between Lennon & McCartney, so the position of Lennon /Freddie as singers on the album covers is no longer a valid point. one other point of note: the typical "who played what" conventions more or less went out of the window on LIB - there were tracks where Paul or John took lead guitar and another where John played bass. Maybe what I've just said is coincidental but this is the one album where you could say there was more tribute to The Beatles in terms of what has been said on here and being experimental in music styles. another non-similarity, I'm afraid. the two albums were polar opposites - with Queen's HS being experimental, while the Beatles' LIB was by their own admission a complete "Get Back" to basics.

But it could be a tribute to Queen. HS even has a song on it that was written for John Lennon. I can imagine Freddie actually hearing some Beatles music at home and this could have given him the chance to take a look at the Beatles' album covers. Who knows... Nothing's officially about this but musicians are well known to gain inspiration from other people's work. I have never heard any Queen member talking about Kiss but about the Beatles. But the Kiss album cover reminds me a little of Queen II but without intention. It's just a cover with four band members and a black background. Weird to think about that their drummer died on the same day as Freddie. That is a reference! Look at this picture of him:
He reminds me of Brian with his hairstyle and the white shirt with the waistcoat
