Perhaps Roger not only asked for his real drums to be replaced by a drum machine, but he made the decision and that he did the programming himself?? Ditto for John's real bass....
Songwriters and performers SERVE the song.... whatever it takes... Mutt Lange always said to Def Leppard when writing songs "don't fall in love with a new song because we can change it" (massively paraphrased haha!!)
OK we know Roger hated the drum machine on the original version of I Can't Live With You (and fair enough, the real drums now sound better unarguably) but so what??
The arguments in this thread are - to coin a phrase - like pride-by-proxy!!
I do like the idea that Breakthru would've sounded awesome live on The Miracle Tour IF.......
There was not just drum machines, it was samples of Roger drums , then programmed by David Richards.
David programmed keyboards on TMLWKY.
I really wonder what and why they were thinking to overproduced and tranformed good tunes into pop lifeless songs.
Now I can listen Party and Rain must fall both sound very beautiful, they could have stayed like that.

Eh? What does that mean? The arguments are (largely) that the songs sounded better with real drums, so why replace them with machines and processing?
In a recent interview Roger said he disliked drum machines, so it does beg the question as to why they were used so prolifically over the last few albums. As has been said, it's not as though Roger was off doing other things during the recording sessions, so it either must have been a group decision, or one heavily influenced by the producer.

I've had Disc 2 on rotation for most of the day, and I have to say, I'm getting more pleasure out of the different versions of songs I know, than I would anything 'new'. FIA was OK, but nothing special, however, these old Miracle tracks are just astonishing in a new light. I really hope we get more of these in the future. There really can't be much more 'new' Freddie stuff left, but give us these 'sessions' versions of the whole catalogue and I'll be a happy bunny.

I don't think anyone is suggesting Roger didn't agree to it, something / someone (or a few people) at the time obviously made a good case for drum machines and he agreed.
It's just surprising after hearing these versions, that they went in that strange direction.
Thanks for the reply. I always thought there was 1 tape for Capital Records only. I am really surprised now Is John S.Stuard trading his cassette yet? Do we have any snippets from 13-track tape? 11 tracks cassette

What I mean is: some Queen fans have this enormous sense of pride in that they think they need to defend the band themselves (or some members of the band). My argument (not saying I’m right or wrong) is the band - at the time - did what THEY wanted to!! And yes: if the consensus was to replace some real drums and bass with sequenced stuff because they felt it sounded better, then that was their prerogative.

Hi @dimitris
Rain must fall and My baby does me are both very clearly pure drum machine (could be a Linn although by this point in the 80s it could be anything e.g. Roland etc) not samples of Roger. Anyway, why does it matter if they are samples of Roger’s kit anyway? Use samples that are good for the song… wherever they’re from….

Point taken, but clearly they were wrong! 😁
I've been craving for a version of Breakthru with real drums since 1989. One of the reasons I've never liked The Miracle album all that much is because of the electronic drums and the thinner guitar sound. So, whether the band felt it was right at the time or not, it clearly didn't appeal to all fans, as I can't be the only one.
Perhaps it's also a bit of an age thing? Maybe younger fans are more accepting of the processed stuff because that's what they grew up with? I'm one of those old gits that was around with them in the 70s, so all those new fangled drum machines didn't appeal. 😄

You’ve added something @lord Fickle so allow me to further reply…
I echo everyone who has said that Breakthru live - with real drums and bass - would’ve sounded AWESOME!! Pretty sure there’s zero chance of Q+AL doing it live…?
I was born in 75 (when Bo Rap was number one actually!) so I grew up with Queen from The Works onwards (I was 9 when I bought it).
I’ve always loved Machines, Radio GaGa etc BECAUSE they’re so heavily programmed and ‘non human’ but hey, different strokes for folks I guess! :-)
P.S. even the fans who hated synths being introduced…. How can anyone deny the beautiful big warm analogue sounds of an Oberheim synth??

I'm afraid I've no real knowledge of one synth from another, so I can't comment on that, but indeed, we all have different tastes.
I've never really been fond of any of the 80s synth stuff, from anyone, one exception perhaps being Ultravox, and in fact, the 80s in general is one of my least preferred music eras.
That, and the 00s, the 10s, and the 20s...

Just watched the "Was it all worth it" video they did..... Apparently there were lots of hidden easter eggs with one very well hidden one..... Lot's of little flash backs through the years.... Was the 'well hidden easter egg'... the one that I didn't see.... Nothing post "The Miracle...." Does that mean we may finally get a Innuendo collection and after years and years of waiting.... finally the Innuendo videos we have all been waiting for....
Apart from many other videos we are all waiting for..... Hyde park (crappy quaility...) Earls court..... (That would have to be the ultimate with the perfect crossfade between Queens prog/heavy rock and the pop venture they were all but set on....) just to name a small few...
Also we are waiting on that very first 'Queen' concert Brian has mentioned....
Don't get your hopes up. I noticed the lack of video from Innuendo onward as well, and automatically assumed that since WIAWI is a retrospective song from 1989, it would't make sense to go beyond that year in the video.
Very impressed with CD 2… Is it me or do the drums at the beginning of Party sound like the start of Driven By You? And… do folks think any of these takes are ‘live takes’ as in the 4 of them playing together live in the studio?
The 2nd disc is a revelation, especially the sheer amount of real drums...
So it's got me thinking, I'm guessing the replacement with drum samples/machines etc might have come from someone in the band who wasn't Roger. I say this because Shove It is littered with real drums from Roger, which he obviously didn't feel the need to replace later on. Yet on the Miracle, released a year later, has loads of real drums replaced. I just sort of think that Roger can't have changed his mind that much in a year?!

I think there is an element of it being a live take, I think they want to invoke a feeling like those Elvis sessions....
But no there's so much Frankensteining over whatever was played live with different takes being combined I'm not sure it can be considered live sessions.
Which is probably why they couldn't call it that, instead having vauge (original take) suffixes.
Was It All Worth It sounds solid and isn't much different to the finished version aside from the intro, instrumental section and outro but it's interesting to hear how it started. I keep hearing Freddie exclaim "Look out, look out Photoshop" part way through the song....
Barely related, apologies...
I still hear Freddie sing "I'll hold that conversation for you, bitch" at the 3:07 mark of LMIYHA.
So I'll be proudly hollering out "Look out Photoshop!" whenever I hear this song, 'till the end of my days...

Have we had a misheard lyrics thread? We must create one, it'll be hilarious!

They’re notoriously shifty with pulling the curtain back too much; perhaps QPL likes causing chaos (relatively) with their vagueness. In fact, I was amazed we got an essay (if that’s what one would call it; I guess more like an info dump interspersed with quotes?) in the Miracle book, considering there was no text (apart from credits) in the News of the World box. And apparently the box set book is missing some information that the 2-disc set has, about You Know You Belong To Me starting life during the Hot Space sessions. (At least according to folks on the Steve Hoffman forum.) But I doubt we’ll ever get anything that is first take, unadorned with Frankensteined extras; at this point, I’m happy they’re giving us anything at all.
Over 5 weeks later and the picture disc is still in stock, and now we know it's a limited edition of 4000 copies. So it might take mere minutes to sell 2000 copies but much longer for the next 2000. Is the post-movie buzz wearing off, or is the market for Queen collectibles simply not as big as I thought?
Well, this time there was a big box released at the same time. Maybe that has something to do with picture discs not selling so much. If one has to make a choise between the box and the picture disc, it's no-brainer..
Yeah, I'm sure that must play a role. Also, just the sheer amount of releases lately, with Back to the Light, Another World, Outsider... I've been spending a little too much lately because I don't have the self-control to just get the 2-CD releases and be done with it.
Lone wolf opinion here, but I'm loving the "Frankensteined" aspect of this. Roger's Freudian slip comment is great fun, and I don't need to sift through 7 hours of outtakes to find it. I'd rather it was a listenable (and DAMN is that 2nd disc ever listenable!) 'best of' rather than every scrap.
I guess I'm more interested in quality over quantity.
