Nowadays, I listen to my own playlist, curated over many years and replicated on my phone. PG's post from the Ken Bruce thread gave me an idea. I have a playlist on my phone, currently at 4,523 tracks, which is on a continuous shuffle, and can be added to with new tracks. This started many years ago with a mere 100 of my most treasured tracks, but has expended ever since. The playlist has travelled with me over several phones, and enables me to hear various random tracks, which are always tracks I like, but are rarely repeated unless I get to the end of the playlist, or somehow the shuffle (annoyingly) gets accidentally reset. Do you have such as playlist and how big is yours? π

My what? I don't have a "playlist", but I do have a few hundred CDs. I have bands that I listen to and I tend to play their entire discography before moving onto another band. I'm currently listening to Gary Glitter in the car (although I confess it's the Ai instrumentals I made for myself!). No idea who I'll listen to next. It all depends on how I feel when I've finished off the last CD.

I never liked Gary Glitter even before he was convicted, but I do have a few Suzi Quatro tracks in my playlist. π

3,650 songs in the permanent list. There is no duplication, and no fat - criteria for entry is "I would never hit skip if that came on"
I listen to new (or at least new to me) stuff when I've got time to concentrate on it. Anything decent goes into a potential additions list, and once there's enough in there, I'll listen to that again and decide what gets added to the permanent list.
If it gets added permanently, I will find the highest bitrate and resolution, and artwork to go with it.
It's all very nerdy...there is a spreadsheet from which I can see which artists have most entries, and what years (every year from 1952 to 2021 is represented, plus many previous ones from classical compositions)

Yup, I do the same. Get a new album, find time to listen to it properly, then decide which (if any) tracks get onto the playlist. I also EQ everything before it goes on my phone, so there's no wild volume surges, and bass and treble are made fairly consistent.
Occasionally, if it's an album by a favourite artist that I know I will like (or get to like), the whole thing gets chucked onto the playlist, then if I do find it's terrible, I remove the entire album from the library, which also removes it from the playlist.
I also embed the artwork, but I'll admit to converting everything to AAC first in iTunes, otherwise I'd run out of space on my phone fairly quickly if everything was at the highest resolution.
I've also got loads of other stuff on my phone, that isn't on the permanent playlist, totalling nearly 12,000 tracks (690 albums), so I do need to conserve storage space and occasionally have a purge of stuff I have no intention of listening to again.

I do need to conserve storage space That is the downside of 24bit 192Khz files! I was always pushing at the limits of affordable capacity, until finally the 400Gb microSD card became reasonable....just at the point phone makers stopped including a slot for one.....

I also EQ everything before it goes on my phone, so there's no wild volume surges, I have a vague pass at that, but I think I need to run some sort of "ReplayGain" process on everything pre-existing to get to a baseline. Classical stuff is a real problem, as some of it has SUCH quiet bits. Bolero can be on for 6 minutes in the car before I even hear anything.

Sometimes it works better than other times, but I find Soundforge's Wave Hammer can equalise quiet and louder parts fairly effectively, without applying too much compression. I don't tend to use "Replay Gain" on my music apps, but it might be an option worth trying if you don't want to go through several thousand tracks to EQ them individually. I've been doing it since starting the playlist, so it's just a question of doing new additions now, which isn't too onerous.

Yup, very annoying, that. I clung on to my Samsung Galaxy S10+ for as long as possible, but eventually it stopped receiving OS updates, and after a couple of drops, one resulting in a cracked back, (the phone, not me picking it up), I succumbed to an S22+ with 256Gb of internal storage, of which about 82% is in use. It took about 3Β½ hours to transfer all the music from the old SD card to the new phone, and that was via the PC as I always keep a backup of my phone music.

Previously S10+ here too - it wasn't the updates, it was the charging socket and the screen - I was increasingly only able to charge wirelessly, and the screen was showing signs of burn in. Now on a Sony Xperia which definitely isn't as good overall, but has a slot (and a headphone jack). Total music requirement is 254Gb, so I'll just have to hope that the next phone was 512Gb built in!

I kept looking at the Sony Xperia, partly because I'd had three Samsungs in a row and fancied a change, and it certainly would have solved the issue of the SD card removal on the Samsungs, but I'd read mixed reviews, and wasn't convinced I'd get on with the taller, narrower body on the Sony.
I'd be interested to hear what the on board OS is like on the Sony. Does it have it's own apps (email, messaging, music, etc) or does it rely on Google's own apps?

Honestly, I can't really tell as I migrated all my existing apps.
The camera app is Sony's and looks and feels like their proper camera, but that's more complexity than I really want from my phone, whereas the Samsung's complexity was just accessible enough.
The screen isn't that dramatic after a month, but there a lot of little annoyances like having to go all the way into settings to select a Bluetooth output, because the quick menu item is just a gigantic toggle. The torch function is laughably bad, there's a voice assistant button that can't be reprogrammed, it's harder to align the wireless charger on the back, Bluetooth signal itself isn't very strong.
Had the S10+ still been around (new) I'd definitely have had another one. Meanwhile I think I've got four more payments on this, and for the price I paid it has to survive at least two years after that.

Thanks, that's really useful. It's hard to know what else to choose when you fancy a change but have been with the same brand for several models. My first Samaung was the S7, and that replaced an iPhone. I've never gone back, partly as to go back now would be too much hassle, and I wouldn't be able to get the same music apps on Apple.
I did look at the OnePlus 10 Pro, which apparently has an excellent camera (Hasselblad), and is slightly cheaper than the Samsungs, but it didn't really seem to have any other advantages so I decided to stick to what I know. Hopefully this S22+ will last me a few years.
Sadly, I can't see SD cards trending back in, as everything seems to be moving towards streaming, but now I've made that leap to internal storage, at least that's one factor not to have to worry about next time.

Good grief! Sounds like a full time job! Do you have to type a load of info to "tag" it as well? I also hope you have everything backed up on a hard drive or two somewhere as well... Everything is stored using iTunes on the PC, and backed up at least twice. The tags are also applied in iTunes before transferring tracks to the phone. It was almost a full time job for a while, but I don't buy many new albums these days, as there's not really much that interests me, so it doesn't take up too much time now. I forgot to mention that I also split and edit tracks that segue or merge into one another, as best as possible, as I have the playlist on shuffle and I don't like tracks being suddenly cut without a clean ending. If it's an album where all the tracks run into each other, such as with some of the proggy stuff I'm into, then I do it in sections, separating at the most convenient points, then tagging each section as one track. That's what can take the most time.

I don't have as much segue stuff (just some of the Queen ones), some of which I'd apply a bit of extra fade out or in to make it less jarring.
I sometimes toy with the idea of having side black of Queen II in as a single track as well as the constituent parts, but haven't bitten that bullet yet..

With the Queen stuff I've either used the single mixes to make stand alone versions (eg, Flick Of The Wrist, Lily Of The Valley), or some of the various stand alone mixes that have appeared via the likes of CMatt and CMI. I don't actually have all the complete Queen albums on my phone, as I've heard them all so much that I tend to be more selective, and it leaves space for other stuff. I've got two home made Queen compilations, featuring 108 tracks, which are all in the playlist.

116 Queen, 27 Roger, 23 Cross, 12 Freddie, 5 Smile, 4 Brian, 2 Freddie / Montserrat, 2 QPR, 1 Felix & Arty
Top 3 Albums:
1. Jazz 12 tracks 2. SHA 10 tracks 3. ADATR, ANATO, NOTW, Game, Hot Space 9 tracks each
In percentage terms
1. Jazz 92% 2. DATR, Game 90% 4. NOTW, Hot Space 82%
Slightly odd that my favourite album (II) is my tenth favourite statistically!

Queen - 108 Brian - 22 Roger - 17 (new live album yet to be processed) Q+AL - 8 Freddie - 2 Fred / Mons - 1 Q+PR - 1
Not sure I've got the mathematical aptitude to work out the percentages! π€£

Will I get banned for spouting significant F values when I reject the null hypothesis?

I got around 1,709 in my Spotify, split across several playlists. I got them separated as these: The chill stuff (anything that isn't metal or hard rock), The metal stuff, Motown & soul, Country (it was a short phase lol), Electronic, Prog, The Beatles, and lastly Queen (appropriately, I called the last one The Royal Playlist).

How many CDs are in your car at any given time? I just purchased (with an xmas gift card), five CD albums plus the 6 CD Dire Straits mini-box set (all six albums) ... which have been in my car since the beginning of the year for my 15 to 20 minute work commute and occasional other driving.
Typically, however, I will have one or two CDs in my car ... plus a few other CDs I have forgotten to bring back into the house after listening.

More stats:
The 3650 songs on my playlist include 2000 UK Top 40 hits, of which 379 were Number 1s. The number 1s cover every year from 1956 to 2002 (and a small handful of other years, latest being 2015).
I have to keep a vague eye out for old hits suddenly returning to the charts and getting higher than originally - there's a fair bit of attention when Kate Bush gets to #1, but when Zeppelin sneak into the lower half of the singles chart based on streams....

I use Apple Music and currently have 7,827 songs across 519 albums by 132 artists, but I continuously listen to the same ~20 songs daily. I frequently delete and add music as my tastes and moods change, but still gravitate to the same stuff. It's frustrating, but I can't break myself free of that cycle. I generally go into each new year with the intention of listening to more new stuff by artists I'm not familiar with β I even had an idea at the beginning of this year to challenge myself to listen to one new (to me) album a day, but I gave up after the third day β but that usually doesn't last. I guess as I've gotten older my hunger for discovering new artists and music has waned considerably, and I'm more comfortable with the familiar (I think the last time I was genuinely excited about new music was 2009, though there were some highlights in 2012 and 2018). Moral of the story: don't grow old, kids!

I've been listening to the new Thin Lizzy Live & Dangerous Box Set, and played all eight discs through consecutively, twice, albeit not in one sitting. I tend to get hooked on a particular album or band and it can be difficult to pull away, a bit like binging on a DVD box set, but I make myself go back to my random playlist, as even though some of the tracks I've been listening to are on it, I know I won't hear them again at least for a while.
