This may of interest to some of you (maybe collectors) although I have never really paid much attention to these before to be honest. Are these a way of telling whether a vinyl is an original pressing or not by any chance or does the same etching appear on re-releases? Etchings On Vinyl Records

Chris Blair also etched "A Blair's Cut" into the runout - not mentioned in the article

The etching on a vinyl is one easy way to differentiate one pressing from another. Most of the time they contain the person/studio who mastered/cut the vinyl or just the label of the album.

Very interesting indeed! Apparently ANATO had a couple different versions of Blair's cut. If yours has Blair's on both sides you've likely got a 1st pressing. A few early represses have Mr. Blair's Cut on side one only and was cut a little hotter with more bass added. Don't believe a copy with Mr Blair's cut on side two exists for whatever reason. But both pressings sound awesome in their own right! Anyone here have a Mr Blair?
If you've got an early UK or US pressing of The Game with Allen Zentz in the runout, you have an absolute masterpiece on your hands 🙌 Gotta be one of the best sounding Queen LPs ever made...

My ANATO does indeed have Mr Blair’s cut on side one. And my version of the game has Allen Zeintz too
I never really knew the significance of these etchings…
Tbh I would tape my precious vinyl and listen to it that way rather than risk damage to them so most of them are pretty mint…
Any other things to look out for etchings wise? My version of Queen has Nick W one side and Blair the other

Queen has a few different variations on the early pressings. I'm not too sure which etchings belong on which sides but I've seen Huggypoo as mentioned above, Off With Their Head (I think? or something along those lines), Blair and Blair Rules. They're quite often found with a different combination of etchings on each side. All sound equally great apparently or around abouts. If you're a completist you must be pulling your hair out 😂 Queen II has a Blair pressing as well but it came out a few years after the first run. Considered a 3rd pressing I believe? People who have that one say it trumps the original which is rare!! Cut from a better source supposedly. Most of the other albums are at their peak sound from the get go...

All this is more fascinating than I thought. Like I said before, I never really paid much attention to this before. The only vinyl I have is picture disc stuff as I got rid of my old vinyl years ago when cd was all the fashion - more fool me I suppose.

First of all apologies for the massive quote chunk - I can’t reduce it on my phone! In answer to your Q about ANATO side 2 has Nick W. Made me go and look at all of them - highlight summary for anyone interested : SHA - abbey road on side 2 DATR - what looks like HTM on side 1 NOTW - nick w side 2 Jazz ( with poster and embossed pink jazz on front) - RTB2 on side 1 and RTB1 on side 2 FG & HS - both Nick w Looked at some singles too WATC - Nick w DSMN - RTB2 side 1 and RTB1 side 2. This is a picture sleeve and I had completely forgotten it was a demo not for resale Nick W was etched onto the 7” of Flash, STL, BL, IAHL & LPDA KQ was Rays side 1 and RTB+SHA side 2 Was a fun look down memory lane. I even found a long forgotten flexi disc of the message from Queen from the 89 convention. This (for those who don’t know) is Dog with a Bone with some rather drunken ramblings from the band on top. I do t have a record player anymore but it has a bit of a crease so not sure it would play anyway

Just checked my copy of QUEEN11.. this has the side white / side black printed on the centre of the label. I believe this is a first pressing.
No etching apart from YAX 4736 , which is crossed out & replaced with 4735 - 4U AR on side White.
& then YAX 4735 again crossed out & replaced with 4736 - 4U MG on side Black .
No info on who cut this .

I saw an early pressing of Q2 earlier... YAX 4735 one side, crossed out and replaced with 4736 on the other (and with a 4U suffix not crossed out). And it was also marked Blairs.
I just checked my copy at home, which is early but def not original (theres no bar code, but the crest is copyrighted) and it's the exact same pressing.

From my knowledge Jazz is most certainly a 1st press and pretty darn sure Nick did the 1st runs for FG and HS. Probably more in there I'm not picking up on. Would you have had any idea those etchings had any significance when you first got them? 😄

Hi Rub Thanks - I had no idea when I collected them. Most of them were amassed in the 80s at record shops/fairs/boot sales. My first ‘at the time’ purchase was the works. I do have two versions of Queen Queen II and Jazz - all were originally purchased in a later version and updated as I learnt a bit more. At the time the etchings meant nothing. These days my Queen collection is the only vinyl I have. (I also have a bunch of 12” pic discs from the 90s). I wouldn’t know where to go to get them valued these days - Record collector was my go to back then. Nicki

Just brought my record collection out of storage. On the Queen album side 1 is Blair, and side 2 is "kip-huggypoo-kissy. I bought this new when Adam was a lad (not Lambert) or 1974 from HMV. I will check the rest in due course.

For a band that were still relatively unknown back then, they must've still been moving a fair amount of units to warrant a re-cut. Either that or the original stampers for side 2 got damaged/worn early on?
