Hi everyone.
On April 29th, 1985, CBS released Freddie Mercury's album 'Mr Bad Guy' on the English and European market; in America it would arrive on May 7th, 1985 under the Columbia Records label. As we well know, the album was not a great success and was criticized, both by the press and by fans and was a commercial fiasco. To celebrate the release of that album, I'm posting below some reviews that appeared in the specialized music press of the time.Enjoy your reading!1) Negative review by Dennis Harvey form the Michigan Daily (May 5th, 1985)2) Positive review from Kerrang magazine (May 1985)3) Positive review from Italian music magazine Radiocorriere TV (September 22nd, 1985)
THAT GUY FREDDIE So far we have seen a few stars next to the title of this Freddie Mercury album. Let's say one thing right away: we don't agree, Mr Bad Guy (CBS) is a great record. The voice and brain of Queen, an overbearing character, perhaps a little didactic in emphasizing his nature and his "macho" look (of the gay side), gains enormously in originality, grit, verve, pleasantness, from the fact of acting on their own. And the musical commitment is not even comparable. Just listen to the orchestral parts, complete with a bassoon to flavor everything, of the song that gives the album its title, with its symphonic and telluric performance, with its echoing of Kurt Weill in the melody sung by Mercury. And what about the "operatic" ending of Man Made Paradise? Work of considerable interest and courageous conception. 4) Negative review by Fred Dellar from unknown English music magazine
