Hi everyone.
Below is the review of Queen's 'News Of The World' album, written by Dutch journalist Han Avót and published in the music magazine Joepie in January 1978. The album is appreciated for its content, especially for the unusual song 'Who Needs You' by John Deacon. Here the scan and the translation. Enjoy the reading!
QUEEN 'News Of The World'
Anyone who thinks of Queen since "Bohemian Rhapsody" immediately hears complicated vocals and sophisticated orchestral beams. However, the Queen fans of the first hour will often experience that gimmick as too pompous. Well, they can be extremely satisfied with the latest Queen album, "News Of The World". The influence of singer Freddie Mercury on the group events seems to considerably less, but the share of John Deacon (bass), Brian May (guitar) and Roger Taylor (drums) increased considerably, resulting in further growth of Queen. Based on the patterns before the LP "A Night at The Opera", but also based on the achievements after that. The vocals are perhaps less complicated - with the exception of "We Are The Champions" - but still fabulously beautiful. And Brian May's guitar work has also remained impressive (tribute to the man behind the knobs). The great merit of this Queen LP is the enormous variety of the material. Each number is slightly different. Sometimes a little better than the previous one, but always almost inappropriately handsome. For me, the most beautiful song on the album is Who needs you" by Deacon. Because it may be so typically un-Queen-like!
