Hi everyone. Below I publish a short article that appeared in the Italian music magazine Ciao 2001 of November 3rd, 1974; is essentially the review of the album 'Queen II', released in Italy by EMI (in a non-gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeve with lyrics) in the second half of 1974, considerably later than in Great Britain - as underlined in the article. The journalist who wrote the article highlights the work of Brian May and praises two songs in particular, 'Father To Son' and 'Ogre Battle', not taking into consideration the rest of the songs and the role of Freddie Mercury, Roger Taylor and John Deacon. To you the scan of the article (in Italian) and the translation in English. Enjoy the reading!
QUEEN - II (EMI)
The group Queen constitutes the rock of the new generations, just a step higher than Slade, Gary Glitter, Sweet, Alvin Stardust. This is their second album, released in Italy with considerable delay (the next one is already ready in England) and without even too much conviction, and instead among the few muzak rockers in England, in my opinion, able to hope to ensure a discreet following from us too. Led by a guitarist, Brian May, who knows how to accompany the hardness of the sound with a certain compositional ductility and some original ideas, the quartet convinces at least those who need immediate rock, without frills (and here behind the door, but distribution of the instruments, with extensive use of keyboards, closed-mouth chorals, measured vocal performances. May has divided this album into two sides, the «white» and the «black», dedicating them to two queens, with titles full of battles and mythology at a low price, and no small amount of ingenuity. Father To Son, musically very rich, is dedicated to the usual relationship between father and son (Cat Stevens docet); Strawbs by Cousins; Ogre Battle is interesting in terms of slow violent rock. No notation of note for the rest.
