Hello everyone. Nice to meet you.
I have recently started a discussion forum, so I am sure there are several things that are new to me, but I am looking forward to working with you.
What I will discuss in this issue is this famous photograph.
This photo has been used in various places, and you may have seen it many times in photo books and at the QUEEN exhibition that was held mainly in Japan last year. The most famous photo is probably the second of the three.
This photo is...
The watermark on the photo above indicates that it was taken by Koh Hasebe.
This photo was taken during the last Japan tour in 1985.
Although the date of the photo is known, the exact date is not. So I will summarize my thoughts on this issue.
The dates of the last Japan tour are as follows
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
May 8, 1985
Place: Tokyo
Venue: Nippon Budokan
It is said that Koh Hasebe filmed only two days of the Budokan concert in Tokyo. This means that Koh Hasebe did not film the performances on the 11th, 13th, and 15th.
Koh Hasebe did not film the three days of performances after the two days at the Budokan, but Jyunjin Yamauchi is said to have filmed the performances at Yoyogi National Stadium on the 11th and in Osaka on the 15th.
Apparently, Mr. Yamauchi also filmed the performance at the Seibu Lions stadium in Tokorozawa in 1982.
I looked up Mr. Yamauchi on Google, but could not find any Queen-related information, but when I searched for his name on Twitter and looked up Queen using "Tweet Search," I found that he posted some of the photos he took at that time, which also show Freddie wearing a light blue Seibu Lions cap.
I did not base my discussion solely on the number of dates that Koh Hasebe took the photos.
After considering this photo from various points of view, I predict that this photo was taken on the first day of the Budokan concert on May 8.
In discussing this photo with various people, some of them suggested that it could have been taken in Nagoya or Osaka. Although such opinions were expressed, the discussion ended with the date initially unknown.
Now, many months have passed since that discussion, and I have "dared" to consider the possibility that Koh Hasebe may have participated in the photo shoot on the other three days, and have considered the possibility that the photo may have been taken on days other than the two days of the Budokan concert in a way that I had not considered.
I considered this possibility in a way that I had not thought of before.
The first possibility is that the video was taken at the Yoyogi concert on May 11.
It is certain that the Yoyogi show was not the Yoyogi show because John's costume is different from the one shown in the video and the photos.
The photo below shows the costume he wore at the Yoyogi show. Comparing John's costume, we can confirm that the photo was not taken at Yoyogi.
And here comes the problem. The rest of the performances in Nagoya and Osaka are not found in the video, nor are there any photos or other documents that can confirm the costumes in detail.
Only one photo of the Osaka show has been found, but not much information can be seen in this one photo.
I had given up on identifying the date of the Budokan 2nd day, Nagoya, and Osaka performances due to the lack of photographs. However, by looking through not only the photos but also the episodes of those days, I came to the result that it might be the first day as I mentioned earlier.
It was one episode that greatly moved my thinking. It was the episode in which Freddy, upon arriving in Japan, placed an order to have flags made for both Japan and England.
Unfortunately, because of the short notice of the order, the flags were not made in time for the Budokan performances on the 8th and 9th. Therefore, the giant Ryogoku flags could not be unveiled on those two days, as can be seen in the video of the Yoyogi performance. (Because it was not yet completed.)
The first day when the flags of both countries were finally completed and unveiled was the Yoyogi show.
In the first photo, you can see a cloth-like object placed under the drum. That is the flag you can see in the second photo. If you check the last part of We Will Rock You at the Yoyogi show, you will see that Freddie carefully placed the flag under the drums, i.e., in the same position as in the photo. (See the third picture).
It seems that he did not need to return the flag to the crew because he was going to perform it during God Save The Queen.
With this in mind, please take a look at the photo again, which is the main subject of this issue.
In this photo, there is no sign of the flag. As you can see, the flag is not being held up as in the previous photo of the Yoyogi show. At that time, I guessed that this photo might have been taken on a day when the flag was not yet completed, i.e., before the Yoyogi show.
And what was the show before the Yoyogi show? The two days before the Yoyogi show were the 8th and 9th at the Budokan. Moreover, the photographer was Koh Hasebe, who attended both of those two days. It all made sense here. The photos that could not be identified on any of the five days of performances were narrowed down to "either" of the two days.
Now, let's talk about the costumes.
First of all, the costumes for the first day of the two days at the Budokan are, thankfully, included in the photos taken before the show.
The following is a photo of them.
Now the costumes of all the members are fixed.
The second day's pictures were taken on the second day, and although they did not show all the members, the pictures below were taken on the second day.
The second day's photo, which does not show all the members, is the same as the first day's, with the same orientation of the wristband and the same Spiderman-printed pants. I was disappointed that this photo could be taken on the first day, but upon closer inspection, I could see that the color of Roger's pants was different.
On the first day, they were black with two white lines at each end, and on the second day, they were the same white pants he wore on the first day of the Rock In Rio Festival held in January 1985 (see the photo below).
Since Roger does not change trousers, the black trousers were worn on May 8, the first day of the festival, and the white trousers were worn on May 9, the second day.
The reason why I expected this photo of Roger in white pants to be taken on the second day and did not doubt that it could be taken in Nagoya or Osaka was the flag that Freddie was holding.
Looking at the flag, we can see that it is not the same size as the flag that was first shown at the Yoyogi show. It is apparently too small.
In view of this, I expected that it would be impossible to use the huge flag that had finally been made only for the Yoyogi show. Therefore, it is expected that the photo with the mini-flag will not be taken not only at Yoyogi but also at the Nagoya and Osaka shows.
Therefore, the picture with the mini-flag is taken on the first day, the color of the pants is different, and the flag has already been completed for Yoyogi. In other words, I am sure that it is the second day of the Budokan concert, which took place between that first day and Yoyogi.
And again, looking at the main photo, we can confirm that he is wearing black trousers. For this reason, I guessed the first day of the Budokan concert on May 8.
Furthermore, from here I will confirm the costumes as far as I know for the 5 days.
First of all, Freddie's costume for the first day is a red lightning tank top and Spiderman pattern costume.
Brian is still wearing the same all-white costume and red fluttering costume with The Works T-shirt at the end of the show.
Roger is wearing black with two white lines on his pants, a thick dark green outfit, a RECORD PLANT black t-shirt, and a WOЯK tank top.
John was dressed in milk-colored clothes and pants.
Freddy's outfit on the second day was a red lightning reversal color tank top (expected) and Spiderman patterned pants.
Brian wore a full-body white outfit, a red fluttering outfit, and at the end of the show, a white outfit with I ❤ ? T-shirt.
Roger wears a SAVE tank top (expected) (photo taken in the same year in Japan) and white pants.
John wears a T-shirt with a big "FUN" written in the center and white pants with a thick black line.
The Yoyogi show (3rd day) is omitted because there is a video of it.
As for Freddie, Brian, Roger, and John at the Nagoya (4th day) and Osaka (5th day) shows, they are unknown because there are no photos or other information.
However, for either of the Nagoya or Osaka shows, Freddie was wearing the rare red lightning tank top, which I expect may have been worn on the second day at the Budokan because of the different orientation of the wristband.
How was it?
Based on the above information, I predict that the photo was taken on May 8 at the Budokan.
Thank you very much.
