Reports in the UK suggesting that the owner of Odeon cinemas is to ban all movies released by Universal after the studio announced it will release films for cinema and home streaming on the same day.
Would such a move by Universal actually be detrimental to Odeon, or would banning Universal films be a case of Odeon cutting off their nose to spite their face?
The way I see it is that those who like the cinema experience will still go the cinema regardless, so Odeon making a daft move.
It might not necessarily be that Universal will be the death of that particular cinema chain, but their prices for tickets and refreshments. I don't see how they can justify £11 when Vue offer the same thing for £4.99 lol.
Bit of a random thread, I know - but just my tuppenceworth on it.

There is Vue and Showcase as well as many other Cinema chains. I doubt much harm will be done.

Yeah, it doesn't look like the other chains are taking this action, only Odeon.
I guess it doesn't really matter right now as we're bloody stuck in anyway, but looking at the bigger picture (no pun intended) I think Odeon's attitude is a myopic.

I was just reading that AMC cinemas in the US are doing the same. These two corporations are in the denial phase and this will only backfire for them in the future.
Today's circumstances are exceptional, but there's no stopping the streaming platforms and digital distribution. Physical media will be less and less relevant as time goes by, and so will be services like cinemas, understandably so. I don't know about you, but many of my movie-going experiences have been disappointing (there's always annoying people in the room) and their services are nowhere as convenient as watching a movie at home whenever you want.
Cinema demise is inevitable and they will become niche sooner than we think. Entertainment has evolved - Netflix premieres so many movies that are never coming to theatres, and that tend is only growing. Once the movie studios decide to take advantage of the untapped online market, it's game over.

You're right, but I'd hate to see it as game over for the cinemas. I'm not there often, but I do like the experience. I'm not in a position to have my own cinema room with state of the art projector lol. Seriously though, they should have seen this coming. While they're still in the game, it's silly to be cutting off avenues.
