Various members of the band have expressed their disdain for miming on shows like Top of the Pops, but they did that several times. They seemed to have a good relationship with Bob Harris, appearing on his radio show more than once and having gig(s) and interview(s) on The Old Grey Whistle Test. It seems like it must have crossed someone's mind for them to go on a normal episode of OWGT some time to perform a song. Yet, I don't believe they ever did this. Does anyone know why?

Not every Old Grey Whistle Test performance was live, though most were.
Queen were never a band that played live anywhere much when they weren't on tour. And for a band that were as successful as they were over a 15 year period they really didn't play as many gigs as most.

For one thing, they got their music videos to keep the BBC busy, so that negates the need for them to go to the TV studios.

I might be going slightly mad, but didn't they perform Flick Of The Wrist on the OGWT?

It's weird as I can see in my mind them performing FOTW in a TV studio somewhere. I remember the guitar solo was different but the rest of it sounded the same as the studio version. I guess it could have been the Hyde Park film, but I'm not convinced it was a live recording. 🤔

Season 3 of Malcolm Gladwell's podcast Revisionist History explores this in great depth - it's well worth a gander.

My mistake, it was Sweet Lady from Hyde Park that was shown.

I might be going slightly mad, but didn't they perform Flick Of The Wrist on the OGWT? Not exactly. They showed a video of FOTW from the Hyde Park Gig. January 6, 1976 ► Andy Fairweather-Low - Jump Up & Turn Around, If I Ever Get Lucky ■ John Prine ■ Linda Ronstadt - Desperado (live film) ■ The Eagles - Doolin' Dalton (live film) ■ Jim Croce - I Fell In Love With A Roller Derby ■ Queen, Bad Bad Leroy Brown (live film) [sic] About the 6 January 1976 episode, Queen didn't appear on that one. The songs 'I Fell In Love With A Roller Derby Queen' and 'Bad Bad Leroy Brown' were performed by its author, Jim Croce. There was originally supposed to be another Queen appearance on OGWT. In January 1978 a special documentary dedicated to Queen was supposed to air, filmed during the shooting of the video for 'We Are The Champions' at the New London Theatre on 6th October 1977 and during the North American tour of 'News Of The World' in November-December 1977; the documentary never saw the light, but the footages were used for the documentaries 'The American Dream' and 'Rocks The World' released in 2017.

Often wondered about this. vh is right, Queen were pretty much never on stage unless it was a full-on gig. The main exceptions are the Montreux shows (mimed) and Saturday Night Live.
I always wonder if they were too precious about this. I can understand them not wanting to play without an audience. With all the Live Aid talk, they obviously felt they usually needed all the bells and whistles to make the right impact (though obviously they didn't).
OGWT in the 70s was pretty exposing, no production, cameras right under your nose, not to mention potential sound/mixing limitations. I get why they never did it (and they never had to really, it was a promotional thing after all). They'd never have done the likes of Jools Holland either I don't think.
Ironically I always felt that an updated OGWT/Jools style recorded show, sans audience, would have been perfect for The Miracle. But they'd just never did that sort of 'small scale' thing and weren't going to start in 1989. Oh to see the boys actually play together as a band one last time. Not to be of course.
