Not sure if it's worth making a whole new thread about, but this Hot Space early tracklist was also on the book. Anyone know what "Brian's idea" or "riff Freddie/John" might be? I was at the book release event in London too yesterday, it was great!

new thread created
if we list the tracks as they appear:
♦ staying power ♦ like a rolling stone (i go crazy) ♦ cool cat ♦ body language ♦ my boy ♦ dancer ♦ brian's idea ♦ riff - freddie/john ♦ streets (pressure)
some points i note from that listing:
♦ my boy supposedly ended up on a charity CD : Lullabies With A Difference - as a Brian solo track. I say supposedly, because i've never seen an actual copy. ♦ firstly, the tape has handwritten "Montreux" on the bottom-left. the "known" Montreux tracks were Pressure, Cool Cat, Soul Brother, Feel Like, People on The Streets...there could've been others ♦ There's no Put Out The Fire or Las Palabras listed - so "Brian's idea" could be either i suppose. ♦ riff - Freddie/John could be an early embryo of Backchat

I found this bit from a Kerrang! interview from ‘82 rather interesting:
Brian: “From beginning to end [the sessions] took about nine months. But we weren’t in there solidly—we did a few tours in between. The actual recording-time was between four and five months. Quite a long time really. [The recording method for The Game] seemed to work well so we thought we’d try it even more for this one. But it didn’t work out as well as we expected, because every time we went in we recorded new stuff. We’d get fed up with the old material and so in the end, about seven months down the line, we still hadn’t got beyond the backing track stage. We must have had about 25 different pieces. It was getting ridiculous, so we had to consolidate and ruthlessly go through everything and pick out the songs that went best together. The good thing that came out of it was that we had a chance to actually pick a direction. Having done some of this funk based stuff, we thought we’d make an issue of it and do the thing properly—so that’s more or less the contents of the first side.”
So Brian’s idea and John and Freddie’s riff could also be completely different songs that didn’t progress beyond the rough mix stage.

It is very interesting that again, they had around 25 tracks or ideas. Then they picked to work on the tracks which fitted according the music direction.
I believe that there are better quality tracks left out, for the shake of... a pop - dance, direction.

This is why I wish QPL gave a hoot about their back catalog and did expanded editions of all their albums – or at least had a Mark Lewisohn-type Recording Sessions book. This kind of stuff may be niche but is so interesting to the anoraks.

My recollection is that Lewinsohn did all his research off his own back, without any support from Apple.
His task was made slightly more easy in that the Beatles used only one studio almost exclusively, and there was probably tabloid reporting of the activities of the biggest band on the planet every day.
Plus, the studio still stands, which isn't the case for a lot of the studios Queen used.

Very cool! Surely, for all albums (except maybe QI and QII if not much is left in the way of outtakes) we could have an early "rough mixes" version, with probably a couple unknown tracks, or at the very least vastly different versions compared to the final ones. Alas, we'll never get anything other than these tracklists. I was at the book release event in London too yesterday, it was great! Please share any tasty bits of info!

"My Boy" - do we know that the track of the same name intended for Hot Space is the same idea revisited for Another World? Although there were a number of years in between HS and AW, it doesn't have the feel of it being an HS idea. To me, it fits the vibe of You Know You belong To Me that we got on The Miracle sessions.

Not sure how conclusive these two sources are but both suggest My Boy was recorded for Hot Space: www.queenvault.com/miscbrianmaysolo.htmlwww.queenpedia.com/index.php?title=My_Boy

Don't forget, that in Another World press release from last year it was mentioned that My Boy was recorded in 1980.

Thanks for that Lord Fickle and CMI. I had always believed it just to be a "rumour" and didn't see the press release for AW.

Maybe the riff credited to Freddie/John is the early version of the Backchat riff that Freddie co-opted for his 'Sex Show' lyric, as heard in the intro for KYA at Montreal.

That was my first thought. Also for "Brian's idea" i can see an early quite abstract developpement of "Las Palabras de Amor"'s synths arpeggio's on the OBX accompanied by the 12strings guitar, hence no lyrics, no title.

It's quite obvious this was basically intended as a reference master, with those song versions compiled for that purpose. Not an early album sequence as such, but it's interesting to see what songs they had at that point. Even "Under Pressure" still had "Streets" (short for "People on Streets") as a working title at this point.
Surely "Like A Rolling Stone" would be a Bob Dylan cover or something? Or Brian May wrote a song of that title which later evolved into "I Go Crazy"? I'm somewhat confused by the origins of that one.

I do believe it’s I Don’t Wanna Be a Rolling Stone, which did become I Go Crazy. It was probably a tape-op’s shorthand, or maybe even a working title, though a cover of the Dylan song would be, ah, interesting. (I think Bowie recorded a version of it later in the 80s? I may be wrong about that though.)

This is a great topic, I am fond of the Hot Space era so any info I can get on this period is appreciated.
