Sorry LF, I was just ripping the proverbial. It won't happen again. Maybe
Hehehe. Spot on. You had me fooled for a minute mate. I thought 'you know who' had found a way to change his IP Address.. I'm pretty positive that "you know who" is so stupid, he thinks an IP Address is a public lavatory.

Interesting question. I've heard a lot of band rivalries before, be it Beatles vs. Stones. Zeppelin vs. Purple, Metallica vs. Megadeth, but it's hard to pinpoint a single band that could count as Queen's rival, best we can do is name their influences and contemporaries.
"Es wird immer weitergehen Musik als Träger von Ideen"
My opinion about Bowie 70s up to 1975 Is that his music is hybrid of more pop rolling stones style with much copy paste of Beatles white album. I really love David's Berlin years.
What I used to do is to compare the albums, bands and artists released the same years as Queen LPs. Some years I was witness others I wasn't born or was very young.
My conclusion was and still that between 1974- 1976 Queen were a league on their own. While 1977-1981 they were keeping great ideas and still trying new different things.
Musically in my opinion Queen II up to ADATR undo Bowie
Hunky Dory with Rick Wakeman on keys, and Eno being on board in the Berlin years - easily on par, I'd say. Just from entirely other directions.
Artists must pass on, but sometimes a mix of passion, good fortune, diligence, expertise, and meticulous labour can capture and restore some of the beauty they left behind.

They sure were unique - no denying that.
But Page sure gives May a run for his money with regards to orchestration on Physical Graffiti. In The Light and Ten Years Gone are masterpieces.

About Queen and David Bowie, Freddie said that they were in that glam wave before Bowie, but they were an underground band, also they worried about the delay of their first album. There is a video where he also said something about Bowie in 1976-77. Musically in my opinion Queen II up to ADATR undo Bowie, who was great.
IMO Hunky, Dogs and Heroes are as good as Queen's best. I'd go so far as to say Hunky is an almost perfect LP - right up there with Abbey Rd, Queen II, WYWH and Rainbow Rising.

In The Light - possibly the most complete Zeppelin track. it has everything - including possibly, the best post-Woodstock "trip melody" of any song. George Harrison was fantastic at this stuff, but he never nailed it quite like Page did here.

Page like Iommi were riff machines in 70s. Brian gives a run for his money in Brighton Rock, The Prophet's song, Bohemian Rhaspody and many other songs especially as composer in 1975-76 period
Interesting enough is that Father to son has riff borrowed by Zeppelin, the same goes for white man which have borrowed elements from Sick again.
But in the light is like Pages needs a teaching lesson from Brian about orchestrations. In my opinion Led Zeppelin difine 1969-1973 rock music. Also if you slow the speed of stone cold crazy, you have a riff which later Black sabbath borrowed.

Yeas I think is Symptom of the universe both song sound similar. Since it is mentioned, I don't know, if anyone has ever notice that during the Brighton rock jam (Japan tour 79) there are passages of Wizzard and Fairies wear boots.
In 80s Heavy metal band Helloween borrowed guitar part from You and I in their song March of time, Metallica four horsemen has Brian's Brighton rock elements. And Iron maiden's Sanctuary has keep yourself alive riff.
I know for a brief period (maybe 74 and 75) Sparks was probably Queen's closest rival. I genuinely love both bands, and Sparks has continued to surprise me with their consistent reinventions (can't wait for their new album later this month), but I think Sparks continued to pursue their muse while Queen pursued success.
we can talk about a kind of rivalry between queen and mott the hoople during the early years when they were touring together, between queen and thin lizzy in the american adatr tour...
what about punk bands in the late 70ies? clearly these bands were here to sweep off the rock dinosaurs, even if this was a short-lived experience.

Interesting perspective. I've always thought In The Light is a bit of a let down. Felt like an epic that never really reached it's full potential. The last two and a half minutes of the song are glorious, but the rest seems a bit lost and wandering. However, Ten Years Gone has always been my favourite Led Zeppelin song. That is a complete track if I've ever heard one.
