I recently got a copy of the UK 12" Single of Freddie's "The Great Pretender" single. This would be the version where the label on the vinyl looks like the classic 60's Parlophone 7" labels: www.discogs.com/release/2116210-Freddie-Mercury-The-Great-Pretender-Extended-VersionAnyway, I found that when I played side two of the single, the 7" version of "The Great Pretender" was missing it's first two chords and starts on the 3rd. I tried it on two different turntables and found it happened on both. And it didn't sound like the record skipped at all. It sounds like it just suddenly fades up on the 3rd chord. Is this a known issue with this single (I've never heard of it before). If it is, does the European version (https://www.discogs.com/release/530698-Freddie-Mercury-The-Great-Pretender/image/SW1hZ2U6MTE0MjIwMTM=) have the same issue? Thanks for the help.

I no longer own my copy but, if I recall correctly, that was how it sounded.

It starts with a fanfare thing, two similar length then a third that leads into the first lyric.
Are you saying the first two fanfare phrases are missing?

So, to the way you say it, there are three "phrases" to the opening. The first two have four chords/beats to them each with the last "phrase" having seven chords/beats. What I'm saying is that the first two beats of that first fanfare phrase are missing from the 7" version on the UK 12"

OK, understood. Thanks for clarifying. I don't think* I have that issue on mine - paper label, matrix 12 R 6151 3-1U-1-1- TOWNHOUSE DMM
* When I went to check, I discovered that the belt had snapped on my record deck, so I didn't review at EXACTLY 45rpm.... Will update when (if) I manage to replace it!

Will update when (if) I manage to replace it! My copy has the following etched matrix numbers: Matrix / Runout (Side A label): 12R 6151A Matrix / Runout (Side B label): 12R 6151B I don't see "Townhouse" at all on either side. According to the Discogs entry for the release, the matrix numbers with "Townhouse" are varients (and DMM stampers!). So, I'm wondering if I have an earlier pressing of the single and, either because they wanted to make it a DMM pressing and/or they discovered the error on Side 2, they made the second stampers.

Surely there's more AFTER the matrix number? the "Townhouse" thing is off to one side, but the 3-1U stuff should be straight after the cat no.
Also, mine was bought in the week of release, so "different" pressing may be more accurate than "earlier". See also the copyright note on ANATO for a similar situation

But if you check the Discogs link in my initial post, it says that was one of the matrix numbers. It could be a case of the single being pressed at multiple plants and wherever my copy was pressed, they missed those first two chords. I’m even more interested to find out if anyone else has this issue and what their matrix numbers are if they do.

I have the European release and also the Canadian release and both have the correct intro on the 7" Version on the B-side.

I've got 3 12" and 4 7" copies. Will give them a spin soon to see/hear what's on there.
