"Let’s give ’em the works!” That was the rallying cry when Queen returned to the studio in 1983. And that’s exactly what they did. After a couple of years indulging some pop and disco whims, they decided that what they really needed to do was to return to rock. But it wasn’t all plain sailing. As The Works celebrates its 40th birthday, Classic Rock takes a look back at how Queen got back to basics and delivered a bit of a belter. Look, I don’t really subscribe to the notion that we’re getting a Works box set this year (or any year), but they are doing a LOT of promotion for this album that it makes me wonder. Queen II’s 50th anniversary is in a week and I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere, while The Works has been getting hyped from almost the beginning of the year. I wonder if Sheer Heart Attack and Killer Queen (ya know, their first international hit) will get this much attention in the autumn.
Curiouser and curiouser…

I would have thought if there was anything in the pipeline in relation to an anniversary release, it'll be mentioned in the article. I guess they've got a bunch of 12" mixes which would be an easy shoo-in for a box set, and with all those singles, it would be commercially more viable than putting in some work for a special edition of Queen II.

If I remeber well they did something about the first two albums in Classic Rock or in Mojo. Edit: August 20230 it was CR about first album and Mojo had Queen II photo session on the cover , however it was about the complete works of the band.

While we could take this as a planned push towards a Works box set it should also be remembered that Classic Rock often run features about classic albums. The features are usually edited together using past interviews with the artists and various people who were connected in some way.
They rarely involve up to date interviews which surely if this was a move towards a re release it would need some involvement.

If QPL were behind this as a marketing push, it would be AFTER the announcement of a release, in order to create more demand.
Any "demand" created now would dissipate by April, let alone November when any potential release would presumably be scheduled.

Having read the article, it's a little rambling, and feels very "assembled".
It's also the first time I've seen the story of the AKOM album version (FM rearranging the existing Highlander version) applied to Radio Ga Ga as well / instead.

After Hot Space and a year off for the first time in a decade, The Works could be considered a comeback of sorts. Maybe that's why it gets more attention than some other album anniversaries.

Yeah I read it too and it seems like it was excerpted from Mark Blake’s Is This the Real Life? book. No new quotes, so I retract my suspicions.
