Hi everyone.
I would like to share with you an article that appeared in the American monthly music magazine Creem in March 1977: it is the review of the album 'A Day At The Races', written by American journalist Billy Altman.
Altman is clearly not a fan of Queen: from his words it is clear that he did not appreciate them at the time of their debut album in 1973 and that even after the release of this album he does not seem to change his mind; in fact his review is rather negative. Below is the full article.

Shitty country, shitty people. Thank you for being an American. And Chaz Bono, wasn't that a whole later than 1977??

I won't dispute the shitty people part...
There's a whole lot of that and especially a lot of ppl who can't be bothered dealing with reality and pushing the country back to the 40s and 50s (*socially) without any the perks of said eras taxation on wealth (*which accounted for their greater sense of security and home ownership back then)
But! CHASTITY BONO... I'm pretty sure that's a dig at when SONNY & CHER put their kid on their TV show. Some folks think it's cute. But others (like this writer) would find it annoying.
Pretty sorry review. I guess from a rocker perspective it's a slim on guitar riffs album. No mention however of TYMD, Long Away or You and I...
Thanks for the share. It's nice to read these things

I think his review was written without ever listening to the album.

Well, there was the homophobia after being too stupid to understand the TV-parody that is I Want To Break Free, the burning of the records in the mid-west etc. It took Queen 13 years to stop bothering with the US, but in the end they were none the worse for it.

The US must burn because of the Freedom Caucus and Antifa. 1984 was 40 years ago ... Jeez

One of the statements in the article which really threw me was "Actually, Brian May hardly does much of anything on this album..." Excuse me, how about the intro. to TYMD? The formidable guitar orchestration on TMW? The awesome solo on WM, immediately followed by the 'breakdown'? And those examples are of course just some of the guitar highlights on the album.

Ted Totally agree with that. Brian's guitar work in this album is magnificient - the solos in 'White Man' or 'The Millionaire Waltz' are true examples; I understand respecting other people's opinions, but this review is not truthful at all. Creem magazine had some of the most negative reviews of Queen albums I've ever read, many of them wildly exaggerated.
