French electronic music pioneer Jean-Michel Jarre will team up with Queen guitarist Brian May for an exceptional one-off live concert event to open this year's Starmus Festival in Slovakia on May 12.With a theme this year of ‘Starmus Earth: the future of our home planet’, the five-day event, which runs from May 13-17 is a gathering that convenes Nobel laureates, scientists and researchers, astronauts, intellectuals and artists for lectures and discussions on topics including environment, AI and cybersecurity, and space, as well as featuring the annual presentation of the Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication, for which Jean-Michel Jarre was a recipient in 2017. "As we continue to learn from the past, we should today listen to the future, being receptive and attentive to the incoming signals," says Jarre. "Breakthroughs, discoveries, and solutions, in all fields exist already there ahead, in the future, waiting for us to find them. It is our vocation as artists, scientists, entrepreneurs, and citizens, to engage and activate progress, in creating a bridge from the future: this is the spirit of Starmus." Jarre's concert kicks off the event and takes place in cooperation with the City of Bratislava, is free to attend and will be televised on Slovakian National RTVS as well as globally via the EBU network and live-streamed on Jean-Michel Jarre’s YouTube channel. Starmus was founded by astrophysicist Garik Israelian, PhD, and Queen guitarist and PhD in astrophysics Sir Brian May, under the auspices of the late Stephen Hawking. www.loudersound.com/news/jean-michel-jarre-to-team-up-with-brian-may-for-biannual-starmus-concert

I thought he played great. And he dealt with his "Jean-Paul" blip about as well as one can. I've said more embarrassing things on stage than that !

Got to admit, JMJ isn't my usual type of thing but having just watched a bit of this, it looks and sounds amazing!

I went to Bratislava to see this live. It would've been disappointing not to see Brian playing in the neighbouring country.
When I go to a concert I usually end up in a philharmonic hall or a manor house. Venues like stadiums, arenas or open-air concerts aren't my typical concert entourage. I was only familiar with a few tracks of JMJ, and knew about the spectacles of his shows. To my surprise I managed to get almost to the front of the general admission area, and I had a clear view to the entire stage. Just before the show began, a group of fans started singing Freddie's ayos, immediately getting a response. The call & response lasted for some time, such a nice moment ! The overall spirit in the audience that evening was wonderful - very relaxed, calm, and happy. In the middle of the show JMJ introduced the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir, which caught me by surprise. I was enjoying the full power of the brass section, and then suddenly I hear the Red Special at full blast. What en entrance ! I was hoping Brian would play the New World Symphony by Dvořák, as I love the (entire) piece and never had a chance to hear Brian playing it. Well, he did play it ! Is it the first professional recording out there of Brian playing this piece? Perhaps it is. And for sure the one and only time he was accompanied by JMJ, and not by Spike Edney. But must say, it missed the Q+AL lightshow with the planets/celestial objects. Still, so happy to be able to hear and see it live. Brian's blip at the end was unfortunate, but he said it in the heat of the moment and many people had a laugh about it. He handled it very well, and corrected himself immediately anyway.
Wonderful evening. I've yet to watch the full live stream. Happy to see Brian again, this time playing one of my favourite pieces of music ever. And it was for free.

This is the complete set of the evening: On 15th May 2024, Brian May also joined The Offspring at Tipos Aréna in Bratislava and played guitar in "Gone Away":

What a surprise! Swiss singer-songwriter Celeste Buckingham sang a beautiful version of "The Miracle"...Brian joined at the end on vocals and guitar! She also performed a medley which included "Earth Song" and "We Are The Champions" with Tony Hadley on vocals.

Brian made an appearance at the Starmus closing ceremony to perform "The Miracle" about halfway or so into the song. www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJ5PTu5F5UA[edit: Nevermind, I see it was already shared ]

I think that counts as performing the song, doncha think?
Another one off the list.
I thought the pacing was bad but singing otherwise good. And the orchestral arrangement for the breakdown with Brian was actually pretty tremendous. I need to hear this on a good system 🤧😁😅 what's that in your eye?

"The Miracle" is cool!
Do all Starmus events get proper releases or professional streams eventually?

The ending to the album version of The Miracle was always a jolt of two disparate songs and has always been my least favorite on the album (though I LOVE "John's ending" and frankly they should have gpone with that), although it did work here BECAUSE they put that break between them. Except how they ended it. They'd have been better repeating the 'message' whilst gradually reducing the number of people singing it until finally the last time is sung by just one person with no instrumentation. How powerful would THAT have been.
