Didn't they previously do the same trick with some Innuendo tracks? ... that's the non-boxed Innuendo... You mean that 'Back to Tapes' event where fans could visit the studios and the engineers played Innuendo tracks fromt the original multitracks? Or... the killer 'The Show Must Go On' remix they did for the 'Bohemian Rhapsody' end credits (minus the horrible edit)

A couple of days ago it was announced that Justin Shirley-Smith will be attending the Freddie Mercury b-day party this year and "...will be bringing with him some multi-tracks from Queenโs 1973 debut album for fans to experience at the mixing desk in the Mountain Studios room." I'm going this year - probably the only year I can go for the time being - and so ready to spend so much time on this! Is anyone else going? Let me know ๐

For the event these songs below were brought and it was a great experience trying them out.

I remember they said the engineer Kevin would have brought the complete Queen I master (multitracks) is it true?

I suspect that each seperate track is a stereo track. Otherwise all drums on MFK and KYA would be in mono, which, they are not. Very interesting to see this. thanks for sharing!

These notes are for stereo stems submixed from original multitracks (16 or 24 tracks) especially for the even or for some modern remixing work on the song.

I wonder why Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy only has one stem for the entire drum set while every other song has the drums divided further.

The goal of the part-mixing is to enable "isolated" parts on the day, so is probably something of a thankless task. Therefore, having mixed down one set of drum tracks to a single stem, maybe someone thought "stuff that" when coming to the next track.
Or maybe GOFLB only had one mic on the drums.

A fair amount of work has clearly gone on at some point on Bo Rhap to remove everything that is on the master tape but not needed for the final mix AND to bounce it all down to instrument-specific stems. We know the BVs for a start are all over the place, and I think the lead vocal has some random drop ins in various tracks.
That work probably wasn't just done for the first time, but must have been a real effort.

As I already told earlier, these tracks are sub-mixed stems. In case of MFK, GOFLB all drums submixed in one stereo stem. KYA drums presented here as one stereo stem as well, as on Rock Tour game. But we know from stems off RockBand that this song presented there with more separated parts of drum kit such as kick drum, snare drum and toms/hat (overhead).

Yes, I'm aware that these stems don't represent the contents of the actual multitracks, but why the inconsistency? Why does every song have individual drum parts except GOFLB? Not genuinely asking, just a curiousity. It definitely doesn't have one mono mic on the drums, pretty easily audible on the Races mix. We know the BVs for a start are all over the place, and I think the lead vocal has some random drop ins in various tracks. On the multitrack, the vocal take used for the final song has no issues, but one of the alternate takes does.

I'm going to Montreux next year, I might be able to do that I'm not quite sure it's an annual thing (but to be fair I haven't checked the specifics in 2022), they brought MFK etc to "celebrate" Queen I's anniversary. But I hope they do it again for you!

I'll either be there around June, July or August 2024, maybe a Queen II or Sheer Heart Attack Anniversary?

Oh yeah, the Mother Love stems are beautiful. I've only heard a secret taping of it, though. Must be beautiful to hear the last lead vocal that Freddie Mercury ever put down, in the same place where he recorded them.

I did the trip to Montreux when on my European trip in 2016 (I'm Australian). I wasn't there for any special occasion, just 2 days in Montreux in the July of that year. Before you get to mix the tracks, either a video of Brian or Roger plays, introducing the track you're about to play with. From memory Roger introduces MIH and Brian introduces ML. I might be wrong. For the Brian introduction to 'Mother Love' he explains the recording process for the song while Freddie was there, and says "and just over there, next to where you're standing right now is where he'd belt out those incredible vocals" (or words to that effect) and you realise the significance of where you're standing. There is (was?) a plaque on the floor showing the exact spot he recorded his final vocals. It's a pretty moving experience, being in that room, I have to say.

The plaque of Freddie's exact spot is still there with both an English and French translation. You can go outside of the casino to take a look at the Tribute Wall which was the original entrance for Mountain Studios. Montreux is full of Queen and Freddie Mercury merch and references. There is one plaque of Freddie that not a lot of people really know about is one of a silhouette profile of Freddie overlooking Lake Geneva with quotes of him describing Montreux and lyrics to A Winter's Tale.
