In the Freddie Mercury Sotheby's auction, there was the description of 16 songs that were worked on during Sheer Heart Attack, each with songwriters listed: "One list shows 16 songs being whittled down to 11, although the selection does not always match the completed album. Each song has a credited writer so we can see that six out of seven of Freddie's songs were selected, Brian contributed six songs of which three were approved, whilst Roger had two songs of which one was selected, as was the only song from John." Oh to know those four rejected songs from Brian and Freddie (we know Roger’s is Sheer Heart Attack)… Now we know.Freddie's songs: - Flick of the Wrist
- Bring Back Leroy Brown
- Killer Queen
- Lap of the Gods I
- Lap of the Gods II
- Lily of the Valley
- Someone Please Tell Me Why
Roger's songs: - Young, Poor and You're Crazy [Tenement Funster]
- S.H.A. [Sheer Heart Attack]
John's song: Brian's songs: - Happy Little Day [Brighton Rock]
- Major Version (?)
- Now I'm Here
- B.D.S. (I can't imagine what this could stand for)
- Mr. Plum (?!)
- She Makes Me
I wonder if any of the unused titles were recorded or if they just exist as lyrics. Imagine further gems like this that are stored away collecting dust in Queen's archives...

Well with a list like this, surely rough versions would've been recorded at least. They would've known what the songs were like and shortlisted which ones to use from that. Also, they wrote the times for the first two songs and couldn't be bothered for the others. This piece of paper must've come quite late as Now I'm Here is on the list. I was always under the impression that it was the last song recorded for the album but maybe Dear Friends was.

Big Dong Strike?
I'm guessing Brighton might have had an alternate cheerful variant?
Beatlesque? It's gotta be something there already

As SHA is my favourite Queen album I find this very interesting. Thanks georg for finding it and starting this thread. I'm not sure if any/all of the unused songs would have been recorded but of course I'd very much prefer it if they were. They would be the ultimate in bonus tracks on a SHA Anniversary box set or a (Super) Deluxe Edition (yes, I can dream, only this dream is two-fold: dreaming for a SHA box/(S)DE and dreaming for those songs - if recorded - to be included).

Might be just me, but "B.D.S." looks like it could also be "B.D.T" or "B.D.$".

Wow - this is an incredible find. Pieces like this rewrite the history of any band. Dare I ask if this is the only such one that was posted for auction ? Could any other album secrets be lurking somewhere in plain sight ?

Wow - this is an incredible find. Pieces like this rewrite the history of any band. Dare I ask if this is the only such one that was posted for auction ? Could any other album secrets be lurking somewhere in plain sight ? That's what I love about things like this. It's seemingly minor stuff – the average Joe doesn't care that Freddie Mercury wrote a song called Someone Please Tell Me Why and it was decided it wasn't good enough, or that Queen actually reunited in December 1987 and not January 1988 to start The Miracle – but it changes the narrative just a little bit, and I find that fascinating. Like, we know that Roger said somewhere that 40 songs were written (not necessarily recorded) for The Game and that it could've been a double album. We know that they recorded 25 songs/ideas for Hot Space. We know they had a week of recording sessions at Basing Street Studios in December 1982. We know that there were 30 songs submitted for The Miracle, and we got a taste of what they were with the Miracle box set. Last year we found out that She Makes Me was written as far back as 1970, and that they actually played it live, AND that it was considered for the first album! Things like this, to me, are more valuable than knowing if Hangman exists. I wouldn't be surprised if there were similar album secrets out there, honestly. I know I'll keep digging and hopefully other trivial gems.

Would you kindly elaborate on when was this disclosed and if there are further details on its live performances? It seems that there are quite a few interesting tracks (Queen compositions) that were performed or rumoured to have been performed that no recording circulate of: - Jesus (this line will be hopefully erased on 25th october!) (1970) - Stone Cold Crazy ("Slower Version") (1970) - She Makes Me ( ? ) - The Night Comes Down (1972) - Mad The Swine (1974) - Long Away (1977) Honorable mentions: - Fairy Feller's (until 2014) - Sleeping On The Sidewalk (until 2017) By going this route, we'll soon learn that 'Misfire' was performed in 1971 / 1972... LOL!

I never heard DF in that context until now. Now I'm Here obviously has long been connected to being in hospital. Brian's also mentioned The Prophet's Song coming from this period but I can't see how it's one of the six songs listed on this sheet.

None of us knew or had any idea that the song was older than songs on Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack, even potentially songs on the first album like The Night Comes Down. I swear if there was a recording of She Makes Me pre-De Lane Lea it could be one of the most fascinating Queen things ever. It might help people realise that it's by no means a bad song, a very delicate passionate thing by Brian.

LOL! I think we can rule out Stone Cold Crazy, I think Brian heavied it up early on in Queen. I guess before the first show as according to Freddie it was the first song in the first show, and I doubt they'd open with a slow number. I read years ago that The Night Comes Down was played on Queen's opening night on the Queen II Tour in Blackpool. Whether there's any truth to that I don't know. To me this is the most interesting to hear live (if it ever was), how would they do it with either just acoustic or electric guitar? Same with White Queen on Queen II USA Tour without a piano for Freddie to play. Nevermore might've been played too on the Sheer Heart Attack USA Tour as it was rehearsed. In fact there could certainly be more that we don't know about. I wouldn't be surprised if they tried more songs on News Of The World Tour among others.

Funnily enough, it's somewhat plausible that Misfire is older than we think. In this interview, Brian mentions that John was the first one to use the Deacy amp, on Misfire. Brian liked the sound, so adopted it himself.
This is interesting because Brian also mentions using it on The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke. So, either his memory of the timeline is messed up, or Misfire actually existed in some form before The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke.

Wow that is a brilliant catch, and I wish that was 100% true but I think Brian has forgotten when Misfire was recorded! I could be wrong but it seems unlikely the music being recorded for Misfire during Queen II. It might be that John did contribute to another song using the Deacy amp for the first time. The question is, which song?

"We know they had a week of recording sessions at Basing Street Studios in December 1982" Where did this information come from? First time I've heard about this. It was in this interview with Kerrang: queenchat.boards.net/thread/4082/brian-interview-steve-kerrang-decemberBrian: “[Returning to the studio] was one of the last things we intended to do after coming off that long touring spree. But we’re going into Basing Street to put down a couple of tracks and see how they turn out. We’ve got a couple of heavy numbers in mind—we thought we’d try something a bit more natural and see how it comes out. In fact we’re actually planning some kind of heavy compilation LP, which may or may not have some live tracks as well as the ones we’ll be doing soon, for early next year.” Then in the 2011 deluxe edition notes for The Works, an engineer Nigel Wells, who worked at Basing Street/Sarm West at the time is credited for I Go Crazy.

Last year we found out that She Makes Me was written as far back as 1970, and that they actually played it live, AND that it was considered for the first album! Technically we don't know that it was performed live - it was written down on a setlist, which could mean a) it still wasn't played, and b) that setlist was just from a rehearsal. The only 100% proof of a song being played is a recording. But indeed, even just seeing it written down was a helluva revelation.

So then surely this means Freddie's vocal was overdubbed in 1983, as his voice sounds much huskier from all the smoking he did on his time off. Is there any proof that Freddie was even present at the December sessions ? Also, with the Works sessions beginning in August 1983, their time away from each other isn't really "a year" now as much as it's barely over six months. These things matter in narratives.

Brian's songs: - B.D.S. (I can't imagine what this could stand for)
I think I've figured it out? My guess is "Brian's Delay Solo" My guess is that this sheet is not a potential album ordering list, it's just a simple rundown of the projects that will be on the album. There's no way it's supposed to be an early album running order, as each song is sorted by songwriter. As we know from the Brighton Fuck demo, Brian's guitar solo recorded in the Queen II sessions was entirely different and used no delays. Perhaps they used a different 16-track tape independently of Brighton Rock's, and flew it in afterwards? It'd make sense considering the solo was an entirely different session.

This is a great theory! I bet that's it. The X next to it would make sense since it ended up being included in Brighton Rock so technically it's a part of that song. I wonder what "Mr. Plum" and "Major Version" are.

Perhaps Mr plum was Mr Testicle.
And the Blag solo aka Brighton Solo was an entire side of a rock piece as the fella suggested BDS ...
Maybe it's something worth asking Brian about

It's pretty likely that if "She Makes Me" was performed or even reharsed for a potential set list, Freddie took over the lead vocals.

She Makes Me was one of the first Queen songs ever and was performed live.
I have four setlists in my collection from 1970, 1970, 1972, 1979. The first three handwritten by Freddie, the fourth was written by Peter Hince and photocopied.
The second earliest setlist I have features She Makes Me and the setlist most likely comes from Imperial College 23.08.1970 as it matches Brian May's personal recording of that concert.
It's a shame they will release only two songs from that night...
