The only thing I'm really disappointed in is that they didn't include the US Single mix of Liar. I know it's not a great edit and the band didn't care for it. But it was an official release and I wish they had included it for the sake of completeness. Also censored version of "Son And Daughter" would be super nice!... oh well....

Earlier on there was a discussion about a live version of "The Night Comes Down" from Marquee 1972 not being released. Are you certain that there is no recording of it in this 1970 tape? Could they just be withholding it for the time being? So regardless of the fate of the Marquee tape, there is still could be a possibility. The primary answer is nobody has a damn clue. But if they ARE "holding back" a Marquee tape, that would be just fucking perverse when it would be a better fit for THIS release than re-including the Rainbow tracks. I’d’ve loved to have Son and Daughter and Liar from Golders Green with Freddie’s vocals “Peter Jacksoned” back to the front of the mix. It’s curious that they’ve chosen possibly the least auspicious tracks from the 1970 Imperial College show and “buried” them at the end of the track listing. Of course they can drip feed us the other songs over the next decade but other than a live anthology release they’ll never fit on anything else as well as they would have here. (Besides the actual Anthology of course).

Can anyone post a source to the new "The Night Comes Down" official mix? I just saw the Spotify fragment and the official video isn't out yet. Every embed I find seems to be some sort of "restoration". queen.lnk.to/TheNightComesDownI don't use Spotify and forbade apple music (*similar reasons as streaming only TV channels) Guess I'll have to wait

For those who haven't yet the Official 2024 Mix of The Night Comes Down does the following video work? It's a fan channel but it is the correct version.

Calling the album "Queen 1" instead of "Queen" just seems wrong to be me. They should have kept it's original tittle. This is where the marketing department gets involved in the creative design process. As a designer in a marketing department, I can understand this is an easy way to differentiate this release from the original, but we will have to see if Queen as an entity will start regarding this as THE version of their debut album. Hopefully not.

Brian's reasoning that he gave ...possibly on his unveiling post?... was that they're retrospectively calling it 'Queen 1' now, as due to the way history unfolded there was a lot more of Queen (the band) to follow, but at the time, despite their self-confidence, there was no guarantees that 'Queen' (the album) would be followed.

I've been referring to it as Queen 1 for about 35 years.
I don't necessarily agree with changing the artwork, but it's not the biggest of issues.

A question. Since my ears are not as good as they used to be, I did not pick up the auto tune on the couple of times I've listened to TNCD. Since the album has been remixed now, is it possible they dropped in a bit of Freddie's vocals from another take instead of it being autotuned?

Honestly, I don't see much of an issue with them calling it Queen I, as long as they don't pull a Genesis and delete the 2011 remaster for those who still wanna hear the album the way it was.

Where are you seeing it for less than $200 Canadian? Cheapest I've found including shipping is 163 Euros which works out at $240 plus the very real probability of Customs duty on top. Cheapest I've found that included shipping and pre paid customs was 195 Euros. I'm definitely buying this monstrous beast, but I'm trying to find the cheapest way to do it. I don't need it on day 1. Amazon Canada doesn't even have it available yet. I've yet to buy from Queen Online and not had them charge me VAT. www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0DCMDJMWBI can swear this said $200 earlier today. But currently it's $170 US, or $230 CAD. Definitely far less than 200 GBP. Considering I bought the upcoming 18CD + 2BluRay Rory Gallagher 'BBC Collection' for less than £130 (including postage), and Thin Lizzy's upcoming '1976' 5CD + BluRay for less than £50 (including postage), this set is way overpriced.

I'm sure it probably is autotuned, but we should remember that the option to just drop bits from different takes in and out easily wasn't available in 1973, so they do have the opportunity to do things with the original sources now that they couldn't have done at the time, even if they had wanted to.

First impressions of this are good. I'm fine with the name change, as I've always referred to it as "Queen I" anyway, and I'm fascinated by the thought of a complete album remix.
I like what I've heard from 'The Night Comes Down', even if that snare drums sound is going to take a bit of getting used to. I have to be honest, any pitch correction on Freddie's voice didn't register with me, but once pointed out I guess I can understand why it's annoying people. But the original album is still there for all to enjoy, so this isn't a case of revisionism or a George Lucas-esque replacement. It's just an alternate version of the album which I'm quite excited about. I really dislike the production of the 1973 original and am expecting this new version to sit better with me.
We shall see, of course.
I'm particularly looking forward to the disc of backing tracks, that's exactly the sort of thing I enjoy.

I guess it all depends on what your reference point is. I was thinking of the Beatles box sets that had less discs and weren't much cheaper. Methinks it's the hardcover book that brings the price of the Queen box up.

It was literally cutting up bits of tape and sticking them together, wasn't it? That was one way, but it's clear from the BO Rhap multitrack that mixing in from different performances during mixing is a capability There's a big difference between dropping a vocal onto a new track to literally splicing a bit of tape from a completely different take. it wasn't the same process as copying a single note from a different take of a song. If they wanted Fred to try singing that line one more time and drop it in, that's easy to do and they could have done it. But the suggestion here is that they may have taken a couple of notes from a different take and dropped those in. That was a lot of effort. You wouldn't even think about doing it that way in 1973. When you splice tape, you have to splice ALL the tracks, you cant just take the vocal from tracks 3 and 4 and retain the instrumentation from tracks 1,2 and 5-16. Every time you change something with Analogue you lose something. If you overlay a vocal onto the vocal track, you can never get back what was there before. Technically, yes you can do it by recording onto different tape and bouncing it, but the effort required to get a single note from take 3 and mix it into the recording of take 5 would be far more difficult than it is these days, when you literally just click a couple of mouse buttons. So yes, it was possible, but they didn't have the time, money or clout to be able to make that happen in 1973. They were unknown. It was ALL Analogue, it is ridiculous how comparatively expensive it would be to change a few notes back then as it is now. These days, stick everything into pro tools and cut and paste to your hearts content.

The autotune creeps me out. You just dont autotune His voice. The imperfection of Freds voice was his weapon. He used it for adding emotion. BR, STL, his voice went everywhere. Imagine autotuning the last hard in DTSH. What emotion would be lost. IMHO they can be slaughtered by doing this.
