I got my box set today! A local record store released on Oct 18. When i found out, I immediately ordered it (on their website) and made my way there finally to see if they would actually let me take it home ahead of the Oct 25 release date. And they did Disc 1: Queen "1" is a very different listen from the original. I agree with the decision of renaming it. I'm not sure how they will follow with the rest of the series. Because of how many times I've listened to it, i feel like this release is a totally different listen and not simply a replacement - such as the 2011 remaster vs. the 1991 remaster i first heard. When i first heard Night Comes Down 2024 - my first impression is the sound of the drums: fuller and less compressed. Sounds like they were meticulously re-recorded. However, when listening to this from KYA on through - you do get used to it. Also, once you hear Great King Rat, you will definitely learn to appreciate it if it turned you off on first listen. You'll also continue to hear other instances of background sounds not easily (or not at all) noticeable in the original mix. Some interesting details at the end of Liar. Jesus is considerably improved from start to finish. Disc 2: Could have easily fit on Disc 1... The De Lane Lea Demos now sound a little too polished and vibrant for Demos. However, now that i've heard these, I'd will probably easily forget the original demo mix. If you go with the Deluxe 2CD – you’re not missing much if you’ve already heard these in their original form or have them on the 2cd 2011 version. Disc 3 (or Disc 2 of the 2-Disc version): No spoilers! Just kept me smiling from ear to ear during the first listen. I don’t remember hearing any of these as leaked demos or anywhere on the web. It’s as fresh as when I first listened to this album after making it my first ever CD purchase in 1995 at the age of 11 right after I got my first CD player in the form of a mini Sony boombox. Here I am only 29 years older! Disc 4 & 5 – will get to this later. Disc 4 should be Disc 1 without the vocals. Disc 5 should be a copy of what’s already available in the 2016 On Air release. Disc 6 Of course, I skipped straight to track 12 – Jesus and I’m a Man from the Imperial College gig in 1970. Hmmm…. The bass doesn’t sound right... It’s a little on the rough side but still a genuinely fascinating listen if not only to hear the only known live recording of Jesus (to my ears at least). Hangman and Doing All Right from the San Diego show sound good enough that the show should have been released in its entirety… maybe for the ANATO box? Odds are they would use the Hammersmith show… An interesting quote from Freddie after an energetic Hangman is played to a raucous – “Maybe we’ll record that one for the next album”… suggesting a studio take/demo could have existed during the ANATO/ADATR sessions? It’s an interesting maybe not so random choice of words to blurt out after performing it live. Overall assessment so far – I’m happy with the Box. However, if you’re getting the 2cd version and you don’t care for all the fanfare – you're not really missing a whole lot. Disc 3 (of the box, or 2 of the 2cd set) is the heart of this release and it’s included in either edition. Disc 4 and 5 are borderline unnecessary. Disc 2 is a real nice to have but not truly necessary if you already own the 2011 edition. I’ve yet to go through the book or other contents of the box. Based on music alone, I absolutely love the set even if the essentials are available at a much much much lower cost. However, if you’re are on a budget – buying the 2cd edition is an absolute necessity. The rest can be streamed.

Also, once you hear Great King Rat, you will definitely learn to appreciate it if it turned you off on first listen. The drums aren't re-recorded, they're very processed but they're still the originals. It’s an interesting maybe not so random choice of words to blurt out after performing it live. This is awesome. No other words to describe it.

I've created a new thread for post-release discussion, as there was quite a lot of distraction in the announcement thread.
Please only post here if you have received your box set, or in response to those that have, but I'd suggest not too many spoilers until the official release date (25/10).

Disc 4 and 5 are borderline unnecessary. We all have our own preferences, but the instrumental discs are like a drug for me. I needs me this stuff!

Are the instrumental disc based on the newly mixed QI or the original mix?

Thanks Bob. I think the question was relating to whether there is a segue between GKR and MTS.

I didn’t want to give that one away but since people are asking and I too thought that was what I was about to hear - I was surprised there was no segue.
Previously, my theory was, fade out in GKR and at least on the Hollywood Records bonus, weird lead in to MTS…. So there must have been a segue. Not the case.
I’ll leave it at that. You’ll probably still be surprised at what you hear when you give it a listen.

Was there ever any credible evidence of the segue? I guess it's a myth now.

Was there ever any credible evidence of the segue? I guess it's a myth now. Given we've known for a while that MTS was intended to have sat between GKR and MFK, and further given the drum fade at the end of GKR, perhaps it wasn't unreasonable to assume there might have originally been a segue between the two, especially as the start of MTS as we know it seems to have a bit (I've?) chopped off, and there's an obvious segue between MTS and MFK.

It's time to forget the myth about the "I've" chop off because of segue on the album.
"I've" was never on multitrack. 1991 mix was made from scratch, not extracted from some album master.
And today or tomorrow CD3 and CD1/4 of the new set will show it in all the colours.

You can even hear the primitive digital noise reduction used, there's no way it was an original master mix.

Guys, I've moved several posts back into the other thread. Please note, this thread is for post-release discussion, ie for when you have received your box set, or after 25th Oct.
Please do not add "mine has been dispatched / not dispatched" type posts to this thread, as it will just result in unnecessary clutter.
Thanks.

Listened to it on my way home in the car. Liar sounds INSANELY GOOD. I'm not even an expert in anything but I wholeheartedly understand why Roger was so, so frustrated with the mix. The original one did not do his Liar drums justice. Truly Sonic Volcano magic. Congratulations to Roger Taylor.
P.S. don't care if anyone disagrees! I enjoyed this the most and I won't have it ruined 😤

So, for some reason The Night Comes Down on disc 2 is an ENTIRELY different remix despite being the exact same performance. The main difference is that the snare sound is more faithful to the original??
Why did they do this? I have no idea. But, Disc 2's remix is the definitive one for me. It fills the Sonic void that the original lost with the new snare mixing in my opinion. Now we can have our cake AND eat it too.

I have a million things to gush about, but only a small few things to complain about, so I'll get those complaints out of the way first.
The SINGLE WORST USE OF PITCH CORRECTION IN QUEEN HISTORY might be in the De Lane Lea demo of Liar. Roger's harmony in the first "Why don't you leave me alone" ACTUALLY sounds like Daft Punk levels of autotune. It's SO MUCH WORSE than the infamouse pitch correction used on The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke from March Rainbow and I'm sure people who don't notice pitch correction will DEFINITELY atleast hear what I'm talking about. Roger is sharp as hell on the original demo, but they could've just taken his second "Why don't you leave me alone" harmony from later in the song...
The mono>stereo AI upmix for Doing All Right in San Diego 1976 is awful. They try to pan the guitar and add effects to it, but the AI model confuses the piano with the guitar, so you get like three pianos playing all at once with with a bit of guitar in it. The vision is totally there- the technology is NOT.
Hangman's AI mono>stereo upmix doesn't fare well too well either, but a mono fold-down solves all my problems with it. And yes, the classic pitch correction.
Those are my only complaints so far. There are so many amazing things about this boxset that I have no idea where to even begin.

I hope there are more messages along those lines if the album release is really worth it, as it seems. I'm afraid that the day after the release, when people have devoured the songs and have satisfied their appetite, we will see messages like: "This is it?" "I expected something better. I hope the next box includes this and that and turns out better than this one. When will it go on sale?". Congratulations. Enjoy listening to those musical gems.

And yes, the classic pitch correction. If only there was someone to fly over the original vocals to the new backing track
