I've always had a kind of love/hate relationship with The Works.
On one hand, it contains 3 of my most favourite Queen songs (Radio Ga Ga, Hammer To Fall, I Want To Break Free) plus another hit in It's A Hard Life. But I've always found, for the first time on a Queen album, the rest of the album a bit of a letdown. And, despite being called "The Works," the small tracklisting means the rest of the album cuts feels even more of a letdown.
Wrongly or rightly, my biggest gripe with The Works is what it could have been. Over the years, from various articles, pictures and rumours, the following tracks could have found their way onto the album:
I Go Crazy (B-Side)
Let Me In Your Heart Again (not finished)
Man On Fire (possibly, ended up a Roger solo song)
Love Kills (rumoured to be tried, but ended up Fred solo song)
There Must Be More To Life Than This (Fred)
Man Made Paradise? (Fred)
I think it's a bit unfair to judge an album by what did not end up being on it, but I can't help but think how even more massive this album could have been if these tracks were completed and added to the album. I'd love to have a chat with Mack about all of Queen's albums he worked on, but this one especially. I've always wondered why these songs were never added. Was it disagreements on the track itself, a timing issue, or the owner deciding to use it on their own solo album?
I have a Works playlist that I listen to that I love and wish they would have released (again, this is only my humble opinion and based on my personal likes):
Side 1
Radio Ga Ga
It's A Hard Life
Man On The Prowl
Man On Fire
Hammer To Fall
There Must Be More To Life Than This
Side 2
Let Me In Your Heart Again
Love Kills
Machines
I Want To Break Free
I Go Crazy
Is This The World We Created?
I've dropped Tear It Up and Keep Passing The Open Windows for timing reasons. But if I'm in my car on a long drive or have enough time, I add them back in to their original spots. I've also found that Man On The Prowl segues into Man On Fire nicely; the same for Love Kills to Machines.
Again - this is just my personal opinion and musical taste. I love Queen for what they are and their history of what they have released contributes to that. I still spin The Works on my turntable and love it for what it is - but I always have this thought of what else it could have been...
