So earlier tonight I finally got around to satisfying a curiosity that piqued me for some time, and I did an A:B video of "Now I'm Here" from the "Live In Japan" release. Have a look at what they did with the intro footage on the "On Fire: Live At The Bowl" bonus DVD version. www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCcexkGUQKM

They did the same with Rock Montreal a few years later, filled in missing video with other parts of the concert. for some reason the opening of now I'm here is always one of the first things to be edited out of live shows. Edit: As this seems like the thread to post this in, We are the Champions from Wembley reuses footage from 1:08 to 1:16. The Concert footage (on the left) starts using alternative camera angle footage from the final chorus, the right video is from the Freddie Cam on the Bonus DVD : www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1z5E4yR744

Yeah, they used bits from Brian's guitar solo and bits from Tie Your Mother Down and the ending of We Are The Champions. -Chin

As a purist I would have preferred the all-black footage, but I can understand why they would edit that out with whatever tricks they come up with.
I am a near-complete ignorant of the live scene, but is there a chance that lots of "blackness" moments during Earls Court '77 (on top of other technical issues) have kept them from releasing the full gig in video? And audio for that matter.

Wasn't the Earls Court footage just a recording taken from what was shown on-screen at the shows recorded straight to 2" videotape? Don't think they have ISO feeds for those shows, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

Individual camera tapes weren't captures, so the angles can't be changed. Same as Houston, only we have the Bob Harris footage there as well. As for the blank segments, it's probably just when between songs, they cut the footage to the screens as nothing was really happening. -Chin

Well according to Bob's site, which i have just checked there were screens there, so presumably. I would have thought 77 would be too early for video screens so the idea it was the screen feed never even occurred to me.

Personally I think photos should be used in place of missing footage, but i don't mind the odd bit of Franknstiening here and there as long as it's not too repetitive.

Honestly, I was expecting a DoRo-type edit job where it would be painfully obvious that the edit had been done, but I was fooled – the footage was synced up nicely to the point where I thought we were going to discuss the laserdisc approach as wrong!
