I was reading this article the other day and it kind of got me thinking..... what if Brian did actually join Sparks? Would he have stayed any length of time? I personally dont think so as he probably wouldnt have much of a say like he did with Queen. I also dont think he would have had as many songs written by him on any of their albums as the Mael brothers would have too much control. He would have just been the guitar player in the band. And besides, Queen was his band, along with Freddie, Roger and John of course where he could play as many styles and write as many songs as he did.

I do like some Sparks stuff, but I have to admit I don't think I've ever heard a full album of theirs. It's amazing that the two of them are still going strong after all these years.

Just my little opinion, but I think the Sparks have gotten better with age. I used to see them as a bit of a novelty act, but was completely wrong. I do agree with Mr Mercury in his comments though, Brian would've been the outsider and just the guitar player. Not something that would sit well with him, given some of his comments on Under Pressure. He appears to be a slight control freak.

With Queen, he had much more of a say in what happened. With Sparks, it might be the same situation the newer guys in the latest line up of Status Quo whereby they had to ask Francis Rossi, the only original member left, if their songs could go on the latest album (called Backbone). Brian might have put up with that for one or two albums and then quit.

I think Queen would have replace Brian (if he had joined Sparks), with Mick Ronson. Later in early 80s would have a reunion with Brian. Many thing would have been very different in an parallel universe....

Many thing would have been very different in an parallel universe.... Oh yes, the whole Queen sound would have changed vastly with another guitar player. At least the orchestrations would have stayed because Ronson was good at that style (apparently it was him who orchestrated some of the Spiders from Mars stuff), although maybe not the multi-layered guitar style.Great Player he was too.

Just my little opinion, but I think the Sparks have gotten better with age. you could say they've not lost their [ahem] spark. sorry. i love this dream sequence from Green Wing (can't believe it's 13 years since it ended) probably one of the finest comedy/pop impersonations ever.

Thanks for the recommendation. 👍 Other work worth checking out: - Kimono My House (1974) - Indiscreet (1975) - Big Beat (1976, far more rock-orientated) - Whomp That Sucker (1981, produced by Mack. You can tell by its drum sound. Very Queen-esque too) - Angst In My Pants (1982, same story as above)

In regards to the OP's question, Sparks was just about to change their musical direction after Indiscreet, having fired their entire band and going back to America to record Big Beat, so I doubt Brian would have been employed for long by the Mael brothers.

That is what I think would have happened to Brian. Glad it didnt really happen though.

I have to listen to the new one again (drip) but Hippopotamus is an excellent (repeated) listen. And if Brian joined Sparks he would have been miserable and would have gone back to school to finish that PHD ages ago. Queen wouldn't have been Queen. Freddie wouldn't have been a legend.

funny article: Did he mention badgers? Russell: It didn’t come up. Ron: He was late to the cause of badgers.

what if Ron Mael joined Queen as a fifth member. Imagine the contrast between him and FM on stage.
