www.youtube.com/channel/UCsaZF4OKvhtGmOxPJUsKLMgThis is something Rudi has been doing live on Sundays for a while now. I've watched a few, but not all. He is sharing some great stories about Queen and Freddie, with some real "deep cut" insights into his time working for the group. At the same time he is promoting (and crowdfunding) for his new book "My Friend Freddie" which I think looks like a fantastic read.. if it ever gets published. There was a separate thread about the (non existent) Slightly Mad "last interview" but this might be a good place to look at/discuss his videos, and maybe note where there is brand new information. For example I learned today that the "One Vision" unison singing around the mic was not actually filmed at Munich/Musicland but weeks later in a mockup of the studio in London.. also there's Freddie specifically requesting a retake so he could nail his iconic last shot on Days of Our Lives, and more. Anyway join or follow his channel and we can post any thoughts or facts that might seem noteworthy or generate new debate (or settle old arguments!)

So here's the vid I watched the other day. Watch the full thing for detail and context etc but here's the main things to take away (at risk of repeating myself) - Queen the untold stories DACAPO
For the One Vision video, Rudi took the footage away to assemble a rough cut, but on getting the final song mix, realised he had no footage for the harmony vocal parts (recorded after he'd left). So they had to build a replica of one corner of Musicland in a studio in London, as by then the band had all left Munich and there was apparently only one day they were all free to film (I guess in the time frame they's set to release the single). Since they were reconvening just to film the vocal harmonies, this inspired Rudi to recreate the Bo Rhap image. This is cool because it also explains why the "I had a dream" and other parts reuse footage from Rio and so on. During the These are the Days of our Lives shoot, apart from reiterating what we know about Freddie's bad foot, Rudi states he was asked to limit the number of takes. Usually he would do multiple takes until he had something special, but this time he was asked not to demand too much of Freddie. Even so, having done Freddie's "close ups" which Rudi was happy with, Freddie himself quietly asked if Rudi could do another (second?) take. This time he dropped the performance at the end, laughing to himself, then doing his iconic "I still love you" before his little hand flourish and exit. Rudi states that only in the edit did he twig what Freddie had been up to. There's much more in this video - how Freddie came to do the Great Pretender solo TV performance in Germany, hi jinks with Barbara Valentin, who was going to be in the Slightly Mad Gorilla.. but I can't/won't write it all up, you'll have to watch yourselves Still I'll try to summarise the real "gems" when I have time. Maybe I will try to post one a day. Enjoy!

Rudi Dolezal - Q&A Instagram live 19/4/2020
OK this is a shorter one but the headline here is a big one.. well it was big news to me anyway.
Tribute Concert
Apparently John Deacon was NOT present for "most" of the rehearsals.. they had a stand in bass player. Wow. (I will assume it was Neil Murray, for various good reasons). John only later on made the decision to actually appear. Rudi felt he always knew he would anyway. But when John later stated (in the fan club mag) that he was initially unsure about playing the tribute, he was obviously deadly serious. This also suggests he had little or nothing to do with the choice of songs and artists, but that is pure speculation.

Something I never knew until now, The invisible Man was one of the rare times the concept for a music video came from DoRo Rather than the band. He's told that story about having to shoot Freddie in "tatdool" first due to not knowing how long Freddie had left before.

If you haven't yet watched the long one, I can save you some time.
1. Skip to 06:55 from the start. You'll miss nothing.
2. 14:52 to 21:30 will tell you how Freddie came to do a German TV appearance for the Great Pretender, and is of interest to those curious about his relationship with Barbara Valentin.
3. 21:50 to 29:10 can be summarised by missing out 22:00 to 29:00.
5. 30:50 to 39:00 double booked, did pre production on two videos at once.
6. 39:10 to 48:40 an idea for a shot didn't work.
7. 48:55 to 57:05 Freddie asks for another take.

Yes it's cool to skip through as the videos are pretty long. I enjoy watching them all though, you get an interesting sense of Rudi's relationship with the band and their work, and his utmost respect for them (and certain other artists) that is missing if you just skim through it. It's all good though, thanks pg for doing that.

I think the stand in bassist MAY have been Pino Palladino, but could have been Neil Murray too. Would be good to find out definitively!

Ah.. now my guess of Neil Murray is based on the following -
- He'd been working extensively with Brian on his solo album - He'd also backed Brian at Seville in 91 (where he'd played on a couple of Queen songs) - What Brian wants Brian gets - Somewhere (on this site?) recently there was a photo of a final rehearsal setlist with details of who was to play on what. It may have been faked though.. anyway it detailed that Roger was due to sing AKOM (well known), but also that John was going to play acoustic(!) on Las Palabras, with Neil Murray playing bass.
This seems rather wild but if it was real, makes me think Neil was the original stand in and stayed around (perhaps on stand by).
Someone could even ask him I guess..
