I saw some posts from 2011 on Queenzone, there are some links, with some unavailable content, that was the raw version of this song's live performance... Nedless to say, I wanna hear it, it was destroyed by the official release

you can find it on the Live At The Rainbow '74 [Dbl CD / Quad Vinyl] release from 2014. As it (not long after that QZone thread) became an official release, it should have been removed from the usual YT (etc) places...some "user edits" are still around: Freddie's playing through the early part of the bridge @01:26 is sublime. i always wondered about two things: ♦ was Roger's "friend" at 02:17 live or an overdub? ♦ Freddie's "crack it open if you please" @ 02:28 - was that an ironically-timed voice crack? or was he (due to the vocal gymnastics/speed) literally gasping for air? and...while we're on the subject: how many lead singers would have the balls to place four fast-tempo vocal songs together in the setlist? ♦ Great King Rat ♦The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke ♦ Keep Yourself Alive ♦ Seven Seas of Rhye |

Freddie just slides into falsetto (like “to see the feller crack a nut at night’s noon time” at the beginning) but his voice wavers a little possibly because he was running out of breath. |

By the way, by relistening to the track, I got the feeling they overdubbed the line “and a satyr peers under lady’s gown” from the original version, since that falsetto in the background doesn’t sound like Roger. |

Actually Roger doesn’t sing “friends” in the studio version, so it’s clear he did sang that note. on the original, i can definitely hear "lady friend" (behind freddie's lead) and it sounds very like Roger. Applying to this line only: "Fairy dandy, tickling the fancy - of his lady friend" this is what I hear: Lead vocals throughout this line: Freddie Harmony vocals: "fairy dandy" = Freddie "tickling the fancy" = Freddie/Brian/Roger "of his lady friend" = Roger - the volume on this fades up to a louder climax of "lady friend" |

Regarding 'lady friend', there are two falsetto bits: Roger and Brian. Brian did loads of falsetto singing in the early days, both live and in the studio. It wasn't just Roger and Frederick.

It's a very weird recording raising more questions than giving answers.
That brings me to the question about their rehearsal sessions for the concert-tours.
What were they like? Did they try every song of a new album? Or was it clear from the start, that songs like "Killer Queen" would never be played in their full glory? Did they record those rehearsals? And if so - did they keep the tapes?

Until I saw Chinwonder2's analysis of the Rainbow concerts, I had always assumed that 'The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke' was really sung on the night as it is on the 2014 release, and it's something that I still believe. The reason for this is because there is nothing to back up the argument that the SOLDIER SAILOR TINKER TAILOR PLOUGH-BOY part is very very VERY heavily pitch-corrected. When I have commented this on various forums and YouTube videos, people have always responded 'How can you not hear how much auto-tune there is?', so I was wondering if anyone would be able to tell me how you can tell it is pitch-corrected, and how it differs to parts that aren't pitch-corrected?

I am one of the people who hears it even when not prompted to, it was probably sung similarly but not exact, there is some weirdness in that vocal line that is hard to explain to someone who doesn't hear it (most of that being down to me being bad at explaining) There might be some videos somewhere on yt that can use other songs as example to explain exactly what i mean since i'm not good at explaining |

The SOLDIER SAILOR TINKER TAILOR PLOUGH-BOY part actually sounds normal to my ears as well. I think the falsetto in "to see a fellow crack a nut at night's moon time" sounds very off though, almost robotic sounding

On the 'PLOUGH-BOY' part of that line, It sounds rather unnatural, whereas on the 'Hero' line (After dragonfly trumpeter line), it sounds normal (To me at least). How much it's pitch-corrected is up for debate, but considering the odd sound of Fred's voice on the former, It's probably more than just a minor edit. Also, I'm sure most people here know that you don't mean any harm (Sorry if I'm coming off as a bit of a jerk btw, I'm just saying that most people know that the people who ask these questions mean well, and aren't doing it out of malicious intent) |

Certain lines just sound far too artificial, not at all like Freddie's voice when singing live.
Have you ever heard the very 'unique' tone Freddie uses on the word 'ploughboy' on any other live recording? I definitely haven't.
It's been heavily tinkered with, especially 'see the feller crack a nut at night's moon time'. The way he switches from chest voice on 'see' to falsetto for the rest of the line sounds robotic!
'Sound' on 'wait till you hear the sound' sounds very strange, probably Freddie running out of breath and trying to strain his way through the line.
Do we know if Freddie had a cold at this time? His voice sounds very raspy and nasally, perhaps why they chose to tinker with certain lines.
The vocal mix isn't brilliant IMO, Brian is too low so can't really hear his harmony line coming through too well.
I'm really surprised no audience recording of this has leaked considering we have bootlegs of other tracks from the concert. It would really help clear up this mystery

Just think of the complaints and whinging though, if they put out a commercial release with all the mistakes, bum notes, and voice cracks still in it. One of the most successful live albums ever is Thin Lizzy's Live and Dangerous, and half of that was re-recorded in the studio. On AC/DC's If You Want Blood..., another classic live album, the backing track to Whole Lotta Rosie is the studio version sped up a bit, with a 'live' overdubbed vocal and guitar solo. |

On the word PLOUGHBOY, Freddie's voice ever-so-slightly breaks, which suggests to me that it was actually sung like that. I have no problem with a bit of correction here and there when a note is flat or if there is some instrument feedback, it makes the listening experience more enjoyable for me tbh! I too am surprised if Freddie really did go for the big crescendo on THAT line, but it was the end of the tour and we all know that the band are always on top form at the end of a tour and will always put on a SHOW, especially when it was their biggest paying audience yet! |
