QZ doesn't allow you to change the password, and it's in plain text. Any suggestions from the knowledgeable ones? Go to your profile: queenzone.com/members/profile.aspxOn the "Basic Profile" tab you can see your e-mail and password (yep, written on your screen just like that). Edit those fields and click on "update profile" and your new e-mail/password combo should work. You won't even need to validate your e-mail.

In other QZ news...anyone else remember WKMahler?
....because he's back!
He's appeared on the QOL site and has just posted some absolute vintage nonsense. Highly recommended reading.

I'd recommend everyone change their password on there to a new randomised one... having them stored as plain text in 2020 is horrifying, but even worse is the idea that the passwords may be given over in the form of the site database to persons unknown to manage. A lot of them may be reused on other sites...

I've created a new 'throwaway' email address and password just for that, but aren't there data protection laws that would prevent him from releasing all the data openly?

There should be even in the deep far away land of Australia, but would he actually think of that type of thing before uploading it?

He should do, or he might find himself at the wrong end of a law suit. If it was the UK and Europe under GDPR, he could face fines of £millions.

as the PM system at QZ isn't the best, I've just sent a copy as an email. anyone else with any concerns feel free to use a copy of my template below.
email to: queen@thinkingwebsites.com.au
Hi Richard
Sad to hear that QZ is closing down. There's talk that you maybe uploading datafiles to github - for others to access archive data.
GPDR has been law for two years now and does not allow public visibility of any stored personal information. Please confirm that no personal individual information (names email addresses etc) is stored in any files you intend to make available.
Kind regards

I'm not sure what regulations they have in Australia, but if the site and the data is hosted their, then 'our' version of GDPR may not be enforceable. I'm pretty sure though, that they would have similar data protection regulations in Australia, which he would have to comply with.

Turns out you don't even need to use an actual backup email at all. I got creative and typed just about anything random I can think of and it accepts it as my email. That should say a lot about the page's security doesn't it?

Kind regardsI guess it's easy to say it when I wasn't the one with the initiative to talk to him about it, but wouldn't it have been easier to just openly tell him we're concerned about our passwords being out in the open?

I think "personal data" covers most things, but if you're specifically worried about your password, then I'd suggest changing it to something random that you don't use elsewhere, and you can always drop Richard a line to express your concerns. I guess the more people that do so the more reason he'll have to take notice. 🙂

I just removed my email and password entirely and it was fine with that 😳 Doesn't that mean you won't be able to log in? I think at the very least, the login does check that the details match those of the account. 🤔

Fuck having any data on show.

I wouldn’t use a random email unless they institute a new password policy and you have to verify your account by... your email.
Just make it a new scrambled password that’s used NOWHERE else

I feel safe, but I guess most people have good reasons not to. The e-mail/password files from the QZ dump could spell disaster for those who don't know their digital safety ABC's.

You’re stuffed if someone reopens the site and sends a mail to that address on order to validate your account If someone reopens the site, technically, we should all need to re-register as the data shouldn't have been passed on. I can't really see anyone wanting to take it over in it's current state.

Thanks to all who suggested changing our email and password on QueenZone. That hadn't even crossed my mind, but after reading your comments, I did just that. (used dump email address and new password)
I'm glad people are looking for ways to save the important content on QueenZone. Sorting through 25 years of posts to save for posterity...sounds like a monumental task. I admit I have never heard of webarchive.org or github before and I don't know what an SQL dump is, all stuff I have read about over the past few days, so I guess I have some catching up to do! My time on QueenZone was relatively short compared to so many of you. It seems when taken as a whole, the good far outweighed the bad...but unfortunately, the bad became far too commonplace over the last few years. Here's to new beginnings!

I PMd Richard last evening to say that GPDR prevents him from making personal information available, and any datafiles loaded to github must have all personal information removed - let's see how he responds The thing is, as I understand it, GDPR only applies if the data is hosted or stored in the territories where the regulations apply, which in this case is the UK and Europe. I'm not sure what regulations they have in Australia, but if the site and the data is hosted their, then 'our' version of GDPR may not be enforceable. I'm pretty sure though, that they would have similar data protection regulations in Australia, which he would have to comply with. additionally, companies that have customers in the EU (airlines, for example) also need to abide by GDPR laws. This has affected us here in New Zealand.
