There are some EMI Queen CDs on the upper shelf, and at least three Japanese CDs. One is the soundtrack to Vision Quest, and another is the album Groovin' by Toshinobu Kubota, with another of his CD albums below. Hi There, talking about other artists music in Freddie's collection (interesting topic IMO): my.matterport.com/show/?m=zy9XT5sUK5b&sr=.13,.89&ss=158 I think all is stored on the three shelfs above the guitar where I recognize a cuople of records: 7inch Go West - We Close Our Eyes 12inches of Kate Bush - Hounds of Love and (I think) Michael Jackson - Leave Me Alone It seems Queen related stuff is stored on the other side on the right I haven't found anything in the lots, did I miss something?

There are two lots - one of Queen records (excluding stuff being sold in individual lots) that lists 220 12" plus CDs and 7", and one of non-queen stuff that I think was illustrated with a Big Fun 12"!!

I wonder if this is / will be the biggest thing Sotheby's have ever handled? Has anyone tried to compute a tentative total for the whole collection based on Sotheby's estimates? I'm really curious to see how it will compare with the actual total.

Ballpark £6m, I'd estimate. Although there's a lot of stuff, there isn't much art / furniture above the 10k mark. Piano + No Rhap lyrics = half the value.
Based on the bids we can see, I suspect the final result will be double that.
As for the biggest Sotheby6have had - not even close. Somebody's car collection will have gone for £1m per vehicle at some point, or somwthing

I'm really curious to see how it will compare with the actual total. I think they were estimating ~£6m when the auction was announced. The way things are going though, bids are going through the ceiling before the auction has even started, so I wouldn't mind betting it will far exceed expectations.

Just had a look at the bids. I think I can safely say I won't be bidding. Can't believe the bids in already of some of the stuff estimated at around £40 pounds or so. Looking forward to visiting the exhibition on Thursday, but time is running out for my premium bonds to come good 😆

I think she is doing her best to make sure that those things will be owned by people who care and know how to preserve the memory. Her children may not be able to handle it. I don't think it is fair to expect her to donate all the proceeds because she cares for her children and wants to make sure they can live comfortably. What? She GOT (as media says) 40 milions just from "Bohermian Rhapsody" movie. Without any move from her. She should AT LEAST give "Queen connected things" to Queen or to museum.

She can give what ever she wants to charity after the auction, after her death, or some time in between. Donating "everything" to Queen or a museum might make her "look good", but is not smart financially.
Given that Mary is blonde, I am betting my life savings, that this auction is a practical joke, and that she will give everything to Queen where it will never see the sun again ...

What? She GOT (as media says) 40 milions just from "Bohermian Rhapsody" movie. Without any move from her. She should AT LEAST give "Queen connected things" to Queen or to museum. Capital Gains Tax (CGT) – CGT is paid on gains made during the course of the tax year and can have a big impact on sales and on gifts. For example: gifted artworks worth £10m the CGT could work out to £2m - which is a considerable tax cost for the donor to incur. Why should Mary incur £2m tax bill for giving away her stuff? Please think things through before leaping to such moralistic assumptions. i really thought we'd left this argument behind us - back on page3. the thread has moved on from there, we're 8 pages better off now.

I wonder if this is / will be the biggest thing Sotheby's have ever handled? As far as I know, Sotheby’s has handled some really famous painter’s works, from which a single item could go as high as dozens of millions USD. While the most expensive lyrics so far was Bob Dylan's handwritten lyrics for Like a Rolling Stone, sold for over $2 million in 2014. So I think Freddie’s stuff was not so prominent to the auction house money-wise. It’s the publicity value of a widely beloved cultural figure that’s worth all the fuzz Sotheby’s has made.

It’s the publicity value of a widely beloved cultural figure that’s worth all the fuzz Sotheby’s has made. quite. The Macklowe Collection - November 2021 White Glove Sale of The Macklowe Collection Totals $676 Million
The highly anticipated sale of The Macklowe Collection realized a total $676.1 million on the strength of fresh-to-market masterpieces by the most important artists of the last 80 years. Highlights of the evening included Mark Rothko’s No. 7, which sold for $82.5 million, Albert Giacometti’s Le Nez, which achieved $78.4 million, Jackson Pollock’s Number 17, 1951, which more than doubled its low estimate to achieve $61.2 million, a new artist record, and Cy Twombly’s monumental Untitled, which sold for $58.9 million.
by comparison, the auction of Freddie's bits n pieces, is mere "chickenfeed baby"

On page 76 of the Sotheby's book, Mary says that a tape recorder was usually set on top of the piano, and there's at least one example of a home recording circulating of Freddie and friends singing at the piano. Surely there must be other cassettes like this (or more serious home demos), but as far as I can tell, none are being auctioned. Are audio recordings of Freddie handled differently for contractual reasons by Queen Productions, so that they become physical properties of Queen Productions, unlike the hand-written lyrics? If so, I wonder if previously unheard cassettes were unearthed during this process, and if they are in the Queen archives now. Or, maybe Mary chose to keep them private. On page 243 there is a small collection of cassettes that appear to be blanks for personal recording (as opposed to cassette albums). Three of them says "The ?? House / Freddie Mercury"... can anyone make it out? I don't think that word is Duck. Maybe Beach? I think another has "Billy Squier" and "April '86" on it. There are some EMI Queen CDs on the upper shelf, and at least three Japanese CDs. One is the soundtrack to Vision Quest, and another is the album Groovin' by Toshinobu Kubota, with another of his CD albums below. Don’t get your hopes up too much. If any tapes are in the auction they’ll probably all be overdubbed with “Property of Queen Productions” 🙁🙂

Does anyone know why his Live Aid and Magic Tour stage clothes aren’t in the auction?
Are they being held back or what?

It's also possible that old clothing was disposed of, although given some of the early 70s stuff that survived, I'd agree that seems unlikely

Obviously we can't reproduce the the whole thing, but I did manage to read it and it doesn't seem to be paywalled at the moment. A couple of questions may have been answered: ‘I’m 72, and next birthday I’m not going to be 50. I’m heading towards, hopefully, being an octogenarian and I just felt that this had to be done in my lifetime."And... Now the house is empty, [Mary] says, it’s as if she has been transported back to the day of viewing it for the first time, ‘and Freddie making plans. It’s such a warm house, a family house, really.’ She has not yet decided whether to sell or keep it.www.telegraph.co.uk/music/2023/08/12/mary-austin-interview-freddie-mercury-home-auction-tour/
