From the Queen-lot: Queen, A Night At The Odeon. How on earth did that get into Freddie's record collection? Mistake, later addition by Mary, unknown 1975/76 test pressing? Also, interesting to see multiple Neil Young records in his collection. I would not have expected those. Later addition by Mary Austin is the most likely option.

I've never dealt with an auction this size so I'm not hugely familiar with all the lingo when it says " No right to reproduce or otherwise commercially exploit the copyright or other intellectual property in the lots is included with the sale of any lot." would that basically mean even if a museum bought some of his outfits they would essentially be forbidden to display them or...I don't really understand it?

I think it probably just means you can't copy or reproduce items, such as the notebooks, and sell copies commercially. But I'm not sure how that would be enforceable once someone has purchased the items.

Use a photograph as an example.
If you TOOK the photograph, you own the copyright, unless you choose to transfer it to someone else .
If you have possession of a print, you do not own the copyright.
If you sell a print, for the avoidance of doubt, you make clear whether or not the copyright is also being sold.

I would think that - as one of the Directors of QPL - Mary would receive copies of all "new" releases I don't want to sound nitpicky, but she's not listed as one here. Or is this website outdated? Irrespective of that, however, why would anyone be surprised that Mary Austin has been receiving copies of new Queen-related releases over the years?

Irrespective of that, however, why would anyone be surprised that Mary Austin has been receiving copies of new Queen-related releases over the years? yes, you're right. but she is a Trustee of two of Freddie's companies and she (as the main beneficiary of his estate) receives residual royalties from record sales. She is supposedly due to receive around £30m for royalties from the Bohemian Rhapsody movie. Freddie (after financial gifts to Freestone, Hutton etc) divided the rest of his estate 50% to Mary and 50% to his parents and sister (equally). When his parents died Mary's share was reported to have increased to 75%. So my point about her receiving copies of "new" Queen releases is still valid, and again you're correct in assuming "why would anyone be surprised that Mary Austin has been receiving copies of new Queen-related releases over the years?" - but I suppose, the concept of being a beneficiary of an ongoing business concern, may escape some folk's grasp?

she is a Trustee of two of Freddie's companies This is Mary's page on the registry, for those who (like me) enjoy being nosy. She's actually involved in three companies (I'm assuming all of them are Freddie-related, given that Jim Beach and his daughter are involved in all of them).

If you sell a print, for the avoidance of doubt, you make clear whether or not the copyright is also being sold. All correct. But using the Sotheby's photos as another example, we don't know to what extent anyone has gone to copyright any of the images. Assuming this has been done, legally speaking, copyright owners can claim that potential royalties have been lost even from including them in a YouTube video, never mind selling them for profit. Whether or not they'd actually follow through on such a claim is another story, as the money they'd claim as potential lost royalties is almost certainly much less than it would cost them to invoke the claim.

Lot 184 - apparently includes a lyric for Feelings, Feelings, "here titled "Now That I'm Here". Now That I'm Here appears on a setlist in lot 103, which still has Liar called Lover, suggesting it was extremely early. So possibly two songs with the same title, or Feelings, Feelings was resurrected in '77 from complete obscurity. I believe in the liner notes for the 2011 edition of NOTW (or maybe it was the Complete Lyrics book – I have neither on hand at the moment) it’s pointed out that Feelings Feelings was written in 1971, and I think Gary Taylor once said on QZ that the band would revisit older songs from previous years, hence Silver Salmon being recorded during (most likely) the NOTW sessions. What we can also glean from that early setlist is that they may well have worked on other songs during the De Lane Lea sessions that didn't get finished. They spent a few weeks there, so it's entirely possible that they worked on more than just the five songs that ended up being their first demo. If only we could know whether not tape was rolling, and where those tapes are. And this makes the 1970 live tape mentioned by Brian all the more tantalizing.

I ordered the book from Hatchards on the 14th when it was again showing as 'IN Stock' after being Sold Out for a week or so. It went back to 'Sold Out' shortly after. Got the email just now, (8 days later) to say it had shipped. Can't help thinking this book has been a far bigger success than they expected and maybe they don't have the staff to deal with it all. It is currently available on the Hatchards site for 'Pre Order' if anyone else wants to buy it. Presumably that means they are printing more. Originally it said a Strictly Limited Edition but they seem to be stretching that description somewhat. Be interested to see if mine is a first print they found after fulfilling all the original orders or a second printing. I'm assuming the latter but the fact that they now have a Pre Order option makes me wonder. (Be really good if there was an easy way to identify first printings of records the way you usually can with books) As I went to post this I thought, someone's going to ask how you identify books... so here's a link to a decent blog post about it. How to spot a First Edition

How to spot a First Edition I got my copy at Sotheby's last week and they have mountains of them. Interestingly there is no copyright / edition info in the front of the book as you'd normally expect. I can't find anything that identifies edition /print run anywhere. *edit* Right at the back it states "First published in Great Britain in 2023 by Sotheby's..."

I was at Sotheby's today and there are loads, yeah. I was surprised at the suggestion they'd be limited edition, they can sell so many. Given that there are 30,000 items, it was always going to be a highlights book. Imagine how heavy it'd be otherwise! I put in a few bids today, and then had a giant panic and thought... what if I win them all?! I kept getting outbid really fast so I put a few more in and now I'm winning a few. All for small things under a grand. But now I feel like I'm panicking a little? LOL. Oh dear. I do want something but I kinda hope I don't win them all now, can you imagine...

Thank you! I'm a lurker who decided to bite the bullet, lol. I've been a fan since the day I saw the video for I Want It All on TOTP, aged 12! I never saw them, sadly, but I did go to the tribute concert. Very happy to be here among friends. The bloody cheek of Amazon! I guess there will be a market for them if they really are limited edition. I did hear that but surely they'll reprint? But yes, there are exhib copies. The place was packed today. A queue all the way around the entire block, hundreds in it all the time. Wonderful to see really. I find it all as moving as it is wonderful.

I’m not sure if this posted here already. Just found a virtual tour of the exhibition 3D tour of SothebysThere are two another versions of "Miracle" tracklist here my.matterport.com/show/?m=zy9XT5sUK5b&sr=-2.17,.43&ss=96 which were present in the description of the lot but with no pictures available of them. Unfortunately one is blocked from view by another, but on the one which is visible we can see some unknown songs and bits. You need to copy paste the link manually as the board doesn't recognize part after comma as a link. It will bring you at the exact place in the room. Ri went to the exhibit and kindly shared with me a photo they took of the track list. Thank you, Ri! Although it looks like there was maybe another song between "Try Again" and "My Life Has Been Saved," Ri's photo shows that there isn't. Also, the two sheets of paper under the notebook have been shifted a bit, so now you can see that the track list in red is numbered clearly from 1 to 20, and a bit more of the sheet with blue ink is visible. However, with the words in blue that are visible down the sheet (Heart, to Me, Again, Life, Feel) it looks like it's another track list of many of the same songs. Overture is the fourth last song, though, with Feel the Force as the final track on this list.

What’s interesting is that only 4 songs (and When Love Breaks Up) that ended up on the album are on the list. (I’m not counting Hijack or My Life or Chinese Torture.) Maybe this was a running list of the songs that were brought to the sessions? Feel the Force wouldn’t be a Queen track for long – the song was recorded by The Cross likely before their tour started at the end of February, so maybe it’s the songs laid down during the first block of sessions?

They've really done a good job with the staging and presentation I must say. Yesterday was absolutely heaving, but on a normal day you can really get into the detail. Of course, it's all very sad as well. After the euphoria of seeing it all on opening night, the morning after I felt quite overcome by how suddenly it all ends. Someone who loved life so much, collecting and shopping, just living, and then it's very abrupt. Sad it's all going to go into private homes, too. Hopefully some museums will bid and keep some of it for the public.

I'm in the US so I won't see the exhibition at Sotheby's but I'm seeing through all of the FB posts as others view the treasures. Like you, I put in a few bids early on. I only bid on one item at a time, but I experienced the same panic you did! What if I win??? Yikes!! The first item I bid on was the little Lalique fish. That bid now stands at 19,000 which is absurd. My guess is that a group of people went in on that and will share the fish. The mild panic I had that I might actually win a bid grew exponentially when it occurred to me that I was bidding in British pounds and that my actual bid was higher in dollar amounts but that didn't stop me. I only bid on one item at a time and for about a week I "owned" one of Freddie's boxes. Eventually I was outbid and I called a halt to my madness. I expect there will be a flurry of last minute bids as the auction nears the end but I will only be watching. I do hope to watch the live auction because I want to see what those items go for and I have never been to an auction and would like to view the process. Lord Fickle, I think you will enjoy the book. I've had it for a while but only started to read it yesterday. We always knew Freddie collected beautiful things, but reading the details of his collection showed me yet another layer of the man. He must have been fascinating to talk to as he shared his knowledge of his possessions. BTW, the actual quality of the book is excellent.

Roger said in an interview with Music Life that they finished recording the album Shove It in September 1987, and Feel the Force was performed by The Cross on TV in November 1987. Shove It wasn't released until April 1988, so I wonder if there was some sort of flip-flopping about whether to release it as a song with The Cross or Queen that contributed to it only being released on the US version of the album? My Baby Loves/Does Me was supposedly written to balance out the songs they had up to that point, so to me that would suggest that this wouldn't be a list of songs brought to the sessions. They also annotated the list with "Side 1" on four tracks, hinting that some time had passed. Interestingly I Want It All is the only one of the four that made it on to the album.

I was really tempted by lot 759, until it went storming past the estimate.
The degree of "accuracy" of the estimate ranges makes me wonder if it's more about marketing - make people think that more things are achievable....

Ach well, I’m pleased I got to go to the exhibition.

The Miracle (track) has three distinct sections, and IWIA has the fast middle bit which sounds from the Disc 2 version that it was a separate part. We also know Breakthru was initially two songs.
