Hi all. This is another article about Brian May and his Red Special guitar: entitled Sounding out your skills, it was published on the English music magazine Sounds on December 8th, 1973. This article is very similar to others already published in the English press in the previous months, to be more precise in the July 7th issue of Record Mirror ( queenchat.boards.net/thread/3828/brian-interview-anderson-record-mirror), in the August 1973 issue of Guitar Magazine ( queenchat.boards.net/thread/4526/jeffery-special-guitar-magazine-august) and in the Melody Maker of November 3rd, 1973 ( queenchat.boards.net/thread/4128/brian-interview-chris-melody-november); this is a symptom that the fact that the musician built his own instrument aroused interest already in the early years of Queen. Here Brian May explains the reasons that led him to build his Red Special and says he also owns a Fender Stratocaster, which he keeps on stage in case of emergency (but which he doesn't use as his main guitar anyway because "the sound's a bit thin"); it is also erroneously reported that May's guitar was built five years earlier (and therefore in 1968), when it was actually built in 1963. Another curious aspect is in the last lines: Brian reveals "Several people have asked me to make them a guitar but I'm not really into that. I don't think I'll make another guitar until I retire". Enjoy the reading!
