Captain Sir Tom Moore has died with coronavirus. The 100-year-old, who raised almost £33m for NHS charities, was taken to Bedford Hospital after requiring help with his breathing on Sunday. The Queen led tributes to Capt Sir Tom, "recognising the inspiration he provided for the whole nation and others across the world". His daughters said they "shared laughter and tears" with their father in their final few hours together. Announcing his death, Hannah Ingram-Moore and Lucy Teixeira said the last year of their father's life had been "nothing short of remarkable". He tested positive for Covid-19 last week. His family said due to other medication he was receiving for pneumonia, he was unable to be vaccinated. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-55881753

It's very sad, he definitely was the most positive thing to have come out of the pandemic. But there was one person I think who did something more incredible, this little boy: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-kent-53190833

Anybody else find it ironic than he raises all that money for the NHS, and they then give him a fatal dose of Covid in return?

It's certainly cruelly ironic that he caught Covid whilst in an NHS hospital, but I wouldn't have said it was deliberate. Somebody must have slipped up somewhere though. As far as I understand, you need to contract Covid off of someone or something, and I would have thought better precautions might have been taken for a 100 year old National Hero who'd just raised nearly £40 million (incl Gift Aid) for NHS charities.

I watch snooker from time to time (mostly The Masters and World Snooker Championship), and play it at least a few times a year - it's much harder than pool but also more rewarding.

"It's Escorts first, second, and third, not surprisingly because they're all Escorts in this race."
Genius. And how quintessentially English.

Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II's husband, has died aged 99, Buckingham Palace has announced.Buckingham Palace said: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. "His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle." Boris Johnson said he "inspired the lives of countless young people". Speaking at Downing Street, the prime minister added: "He helped to steer the Royal Family and the monarchy so that it remains an institution indisputably vital to the balance and happiness of our national life." Mr Johnson said he received the news of the duke's death "with great sadness". "Prince Philip earned the affection of generations here in the United Kingdom, across the Commonwealth, and around the world," he said. Paying tribute to the duke's role as the longest serving consort in history, Mr Johnson also remembered Prince Philip as one of the last surviving people to have fought in World War II. "From that conflict he took an ethic of service that he applied throughout the unprecedented changes of the post-War era," Mr Johnson said. "Like the expert carriage driver that he was, he helped to steer the Royal Family and the monarchy so that it remains an institution indisputably vital to the balance and happiness of our national life." Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said she was "saddened" by the death of the duke. She tweeted: "I send my personal and deepest condolences - and those of scotgov and the people of Scotland - to Her Majesty The Queen and her family." Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said the UK had lost an "extraordinary public servant", adding he would be remembered most of all for his most "extraordinary commitment and devotion to the Queen". Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, said: "He consistently put the interests of others ahead of his own and, in so doing, provided an outstanding example of Christian service." The archbishop added: "As we recover and rebuild after the terrible trial of the coronavirus pandemic, we will need fortitude and a deep sense of commitment to serving others." The prince married Princess Elizabeth in 1947, five years before she became Queen, and was the longest-serving royal consort in British history. In March, the Duke of Edinburgh left hospital after a month-long stay for treatment. He underwent a procedure for a pre-existing heart condition at another London hospital - St Bartholomew's. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11437314

Hmm... may he rest in peace. A witness to two WWII campaigns and many more important and turbulent events concerning UK and its place in world's geopolitical history. I am well aware that not everybody were a fan of The Firm and the way it was managed but still.... that symbol stood for something....
On another note...: Wasn't he present in the audience at Live Aid 1985 ? That would mean that this is historically speaking the longest delay ever that Brian's curse has ever had!

Prince Charles and Princess Diana were in attendance, I don't think Prince Philip was. What is Brian's curse?
