Is it just me that can't get particularly excited about this? Sure, I'd love to see it in IMEX with better sound than I get in my lounge, but at the end of the day, I've seen it so many times over the last 40 years, from renting then buying the first VHS video, then all the subsequent DVDs and Bluray releases, I kind of think there isn't really much more to see. If they'd done something with a 'new' concert we hadn't seen before, I'd be much more enthusiastic. I've always personally found interest in varying mixes of the same subject, but I can understand why somebody wouldn't. That said, of course I think everyone would agree that a complete revamp of the show with the lost footage would be incredible, but sadly not possible. At the very least, they should have just re-scanned the film instead of taking the old 2007 result and AI upscaling it. Why on earth would they synthesize detail when the REAL detail is literally right there?? Incredibly lazy. I also would've liked them to take this opportunity to re-evaluate some of the overdubs and fixes, but alas, it seems that it's exactly the same. As stated in the linked article: "Most of the restoration and remastering work was completed by OnSight during the Covid-19 lockdown back in 2020 but it still took some time to make it to IMAX. Silver Salt assisted with preliminary film fixes and an open gate 4K scan of the 35mm film print was used to create the full height IMAX version of this historic Queen performance."

Yikes I'd recommend eating those hats at least 24 hours apart! Nope, there absolutely is AI smoothing in the film, I noticed it while watching and there's some pretty awful pictures going around. Brian even said it was "digitally remastered for the first time ever" in his little opening night speech, which is just PR for "AI upscaled." The fact that the film WAS rescanned and then slathered with a horrible AI is even WORSE than what I initially said. Holy shit why would they not just release the scan as it was, NOBODY would have minded the quirks of 75mm. Now it just looks like an uncanny inbetween of both.

Yeah, it's still cropped from what I recall. I'm almost CERTAIN that it's just the 2007 version, I truly doubt that it was a new scan.

Silver Salt are the same people who helped with the mircale video “restorations” so I do highly doubt they actually put any effort into getting a good scan.

Is there a way to tell for sure if it's AI, especially if I'm an amateur like what should I look for?
It's coming in on 21st Feb on here (seems like they're rolling out for more countries after the second wave, so keep an eye out!)

AI at the moment cannot render hands properly at the moment. Take a look at the picture posted earlier where Freddie is holding the mike. There is other giveaways as mentioned in the background. This is only a small selection of faults of the AI program, if you search online you will find a lot of problems in other pictures.

'Grain reduction' should also be a concern IMHO.
Film has inherent grain which should be embraced. When you reduce it you end up with waxy skin tones that look so unnatural.
Can anyone comment if faces do look waxy in this or are they OK?
Cheers

Looked like he's been laminated in plastic... or maybe it's just me. I wish I'd have gone. Didn't know they redid the audio. The only Queen screenings I've been to (QPR - UKRAINE, HUNGARIAN RHAPSODY) have been POORLY attended For the crap that it was, that damn biopic sure revitalized em again.

Those photos DO NOT do the picture quality any justice. Most likely taken with a phone in a dark cinema.. so much room for error.
Cleanup of the scans surely has been done, including, probably, grain reduction. But in no case grain removal. So you can still clearly see the film grain, and imo faces do not look waxy and you can clearly see blemishes, the odd small pimple, shaved stubbles and, of course, Freddies scar below his right eye.
To comment on the 'horror' of grain removal. I indeed have seen this done poorly in the past, when digital cleanup was in its infancy, but a lot has improved over the last couple of years. And in years to come AI cleanup/upscaling will surely become indistinguishable from the real thing for human eyes. Which, by that point, it becomes even more important to also archive/document/release versions of the actual untouched captures. So we dont only get a super computer's interpretation of footage.

I'm sure they'll announce more regions soon! Which country are you in?

they don't give it the IMAX treatment only to put it away after two short runs. An official release must be coming....
(then again - why the hell bother to film/produce Qal in London 22, only to have it stream for a week....)

I saw that cinemas in Japan are putting Rock Montreal on their previews (those trailers before a movie starts in a cinema) and they have a date of 22nd Feb. Mine (Indonesia) was 21st Feb. I think an announcement should be coming!

I don't know if I should take it as good news that they released a new remaster of a remaster that already been remastered. The only thing I'm a little interested in is the sound, but that's about it.

Hard to get enthusiastic about this one.
I love the show but they already released this in 2007.
They should have finally put the record straight and include ALL the audio from the both nights in Montreal in 1981. Now there's no actual new content (maybe a bit better sound and visuals).
It's incredible we get a NEW RERELEASE of Montreal before they put out anything from the seventies.
Deep deep sigh
We will never get to hear any really rare goodies...

LOL - the blue vinyl is £53, the blu-ray is £20 and the CD is £13...totalling £86 if bought separately.
HOWEVER...if you buy the LP/BR/CD BUNDLE...it's £91 (BEFORE postage). In what way is that a deal?

I’m interested in the 4K disc and possibly the blue vinyl. Too bad the QOL Store will not recognize my account login or ability to reset my password or let me enter the birthday discount code they just sent me….

I haven't got Rock Montreal on vinyl and normally I'd buy the blue vinyl now. But I'm pissed off they only offer it on their website which makes it all the more expensive for me.
So they can shove it... Well, you know.

I ended up just buying the blue vinyl because I don't have the album on that format. I made the mistake of selling my boxset a few years ago, and now the price is stupid. And we all know how it works...the blue LP will sell out and will suddenly be a £53 record that sells for hundreds.
I'll pick up the BR at HMV because I think the rehearsal footage piece isn't on the previous release.
Bit confused about the packaging they're showing online too - the standalone CD appears to be a digipack, but the bundle offering seems to be a jewel case. Hmmm....
The weird, wonderful, confusing and infuriating world of Queen!
