Doin' Alright isn't doin' alright, and no one wanted to buy Polar Bear, so now we move on to the last round. Discussion: how'd this series of voting pan out for you? As expected or a total surprise? Note: I need to take a break for a week – I'll pick this up again on Tuesday. Round 1 Blag Step On MeRound 2 Doin' Alright Polar Bear

I obtained an April Spring in my step when I voted against E, because it needs to come back to Earth.
Georg - Have a nice break - see you in fall.
Whatever ...

Last round APRIL LADY.. it's a good one with some Roger flair but I prefer the space age hippy 60s excursion stuff flowing from these ppls various interpretations and curiosities of the galaxy in a space age .
I am fine with whatever happier happened. They're all pretty decent tracks except BLAG which was a nice foray instrumental. Would've been nice if Polar Bear faced Earth but that's just me.. those r my favorites.

Not awfully surprised to see Earth win but I’d have picked Step On Me as the winner. Lovely wee slice of pop, whereas I always felt Earth was a wee bit dreary. Still, I’m sure I’m in the minority with that one.

I quite like April Lady, but of the two, Earth is the better song.

At least, Earth is not a cover song. Is April Lady? Yes, I think there are a thread somewhere about that. The first recorded version is from Southern Comfort.

This is the first I've heard of it - and it's pretty gorgeous ! The verse is converted to 4/4 time, and it's very well recorded. And it was done in 1971, which means it's the earliest known cover of any song written by a member of Queen - not the other way around ! This is a pretty obscure band (seemingly a side project of Matthews Southern Comfort, a genetic relative of Fairport Convention). rateyourmusic.com/release/album/southern_comfort/frog_cityQuestion is - how did they manage to hear the recording of April Lady to cover it so accurately if it wasn't released until over a decade later ?

If I recall correctly, in the Ghost of a Smile booklet (by Tim Staffel and maybe some other bloke), it stated that the record company offered Smile a song from other artist from the label. Maybe we can find some other version out there.

Maybe we can find some other version out there. I stand corrected - April Lady was written by Stanley Lucas, who was apparently a staff songwriter at the Mercury label, but has no other notable credits from the period. rateyourmusic.com/artist/stan_lucas/creditsBut the Southern Comfort version from 1971 is definitely a cover ! So we're both partly right. Here's the Ghost of a Smile booklet from 1997:

I think this was a topic on a form a while back how April Lady came from.
This is a recording by a group called Colonel Bagshot. The recording is definitely old but I don't think recording was released until this century. It was an outtake from an album released in 1971.

Thanks for informing us about that cover version, Maxi Dries and RW for the link; I just listened to SC's rendition and I think it's pretty good. That's a good question as to how were they able to hear the recording of AL prior to covering it. I have the GOAS release so I'll check the booklet for that info. about the record co. offering Smile a song from another label artist - thanks MD for that info. too.
EDIT: I just saw RW's posted comment with the GOAS booklet and NathanH's comment with a link to another version of AL; I'll take a look at the former and listen to the latter shortly.

Oh wow, that book says Tim sings April Lady - I've always heard it as Brian singing lead. Weird! I guess the muddy quality of the audio played tricks on my ears all these years.

I thought that was Brian too! At least some of the time. And Roger takes a lyric in the chorus, doesn't he? "It's been good to have you around."

I am quite certain you are right. The booklet was probably written by Greg Brooks, just about every site on the WWW cites Brian as the lead singer.

Yes, Roger does sing those lyrics in the chorus; I believe he also sings "You've done a lot for the folks in this town" in the chorus too.

I had no idea. I love them all and cannot possibly pick a favourite. Also, this song by Colonet Bagshot is absolutely brilliant (and sadly also timeless, because the war machine keeps rolling):

I'd always pegged it as Brian too. Some of those vowels are so unmistakably him. And compare the timbre to Some Day One Day. The same goes for the lower parts in the verses of Polar Bear. I'm 99% certain that's Brian too.

Im glad exactly the two songs I regard the best out of Smile tracks survived to the last round. It's a hard call but I voted out April Lady. Although its a very interesting, original track, Earth seems slightly better to me. But they are both great tracks and big personal favourites.
