If they ever do this for Queen II, it will immediately be made irrelevant due to the C_matt mix that's out there, which I think is the definitive mix for the album, and Queen 1 would have been better off with that sort of treatment. Gotta say I disagree with C_Matt's being a definitive mix. It's incredible to listen to, but he did some sacrilege here and there. For example, he actively changed the composition of John's bass part in TMOTBQ, which is way worse than any pitch correction on Queen Productions' part. He also removed a few harmonies like a short one on "Do you mean it, do you mean it, do you mean it" C_Matt's is fantastic and I love it for casual listens, but it could definitely be improved upon. By Justin Shirley Smith? I dunno...

I just start to listen to the demos, and... is the demo of KYA on the demos CD the same as the one that we know as Keep Yourself Alive (Trident Studios Early Version)? Yes, I think so too. But the drum solo is kinda different with kongas and stuff. Now we know its mostly Take 13. GKR is by the way very identical to one convention Tape (rather obvious bc it's called Take 1 too). But there are some changes too. And there are some different guitar overdubs on the acetate version.

i'm absolutely loving the drums on this 2024 remix. Can't wait to get to discs 2-6. here's a thought: if they do work on II next and they manage to get the drums 50% as good as this, then I'll be happy. i'm well into my 60s now, but if Queen can somehow produce the definitive versions of I, II and Races, then that would be a result and the wait would be worth it. For me it's not the drums that need to be tweaked for Queen II - it's the muddiness, which can largely be helped with panning and EQing the separate tracks. I'm all ears to hear what they're going to come up with.

The banter at the end of Mad the Swine is priceless: Freddie: "Do another one straight away, 'cause that wasn't too good. Roger, you fucked it up." Roger: "Aw, nuts that you noticed!" Brian, enthusiastically: "I noticed!" Roger: "Freddie's singing 'ooh hoo' all over the place." (mimics Freddie) "'I want you to do this!'" (demonstrates drum break) Freddie: "No, that wasn't the one you fucked up!" Roger: "No, no, I know." Brian: "What do you think this group's called?" Freddie: "Bi—Kind Bitch." (?!) He says Queen Bitch - a Bowie reference, as Hunky Dory was new and fresh on their minds.

Love the new remix. I wonder what John did to create that bass sound in the Liar solo? Is it just simply a lot of gain or did he use some kind of pedal? He's playing a Rickenbacker, which has a top-heavy tone. No doubt he was influenced by Chris Squire at this point. Seeing that picture of John with the Rickenbacker bass recently and hearing that bass riff(solo) on the remix of Liar, I'm just wondering if he played the Rick on Liar. Sounds closer to a Rick than a Fender. It has the metallic sound to it. Anyone know about what bass he used? I guess this answers your enquiry too !

There are already pages of responses, but I have to chime in about the sessions disc. It is an incredible historical document, the likes of which some of us have been dreaming of hearing for decades. The outtakes heard on the News of the World and The Miracle box sets produced many gems, but Queen I is on a whole other level of revelation - not only musically, but the insight we get into their working environment and interpersonal dynamics. I have never smiled and laughed so much during an hour of music. Brian May's acoustic on Doing All Right and and Great King Rat - just wow. Guitarists are so often rated on their lead playing, but this is some mighty solid rhythm playing here. It really cannot be overstated what a great guitar player he is. It is absolutely delightful to hear Freddie playing with the melodies and words, even singing the guitar parts soon to be added to Great King Rat. We already know how massively talented and creative this man was, but this is a bird's eye view into what was a very private process. You can hear his excitement at finally being in the studio with May and Taylor after a couple years of knowing them. Hearing many of these songs without the overdubs really hammers home how profound the Zeppelin and Sabbath influences are on Queen at this point. The one major outlier here is My Fairy King, where there's a whole other thing going on - the piano is such a huge part of what would set them apart from most. To hear them piecing together its bed tracks is an incredible trip. I've heard this song hundreds of times, and I still had trouble following it without the vocal. So for Taylor and Deacon to be learning the parts of this pretty irregular piece and under the pressure of having to nail them, it is mighty impressive that they get as close as they do. Piecing it together from various takes is nothing to be ashamed of. True pros. And while the outtake of The Night Comes Down was a joy to hear, it makes me that much more curious to hear any of the rejected takes done at Trident. Before the one outtake of Modern Times Rock 'n' Roll, Mercury says May's guitar "sounds like thunder." These guys are young (in their mid-20s) and surprising each other in the early stages of their relationship. And it's so great to hear the rhythm guitar part under the solo - almost bluesy. The dynamics in Freddie's vocal in Son and Daughter stood out to me. This is something that was lost when he sang some of these songs live, where it's just pure chest voice. Some of that femininity that made him so unique is lost, but of course he knew his voice and what worked in each situation. At one point you can hear a bit of frustration in Freddie between takes. He was unhappy with the take, and the engineer offers to do another. He says he needs a break. For those of us who aren't musicians - recording is bloody hard. And to think this wasn't nearly as complex as the albums to come ! "I'm singing the third verse, I'm not singing the second" - bloody hilarious. The greatest guide vocal outtake ever ? There's a moment where the tubes in a Vox AC30 are going awry, and Mercury quips, "his guitar is like a firecracker!" They soon swap out amps, and it's back to work. This otherwise mundane moment was included on the box set no doubt because it's yet another insight into the workings of the mind of one Freddie Bulsara. The test run of See What a Fool I've Been at De Lane Lea has a super slow tempo, leaving Brian that much more room to let it rip. He switches to the out of phase pickup setting - he already knows his homemade guitar intimately well so early into his recording career. And right as the tape begins rolling (which is ultimately the second earliest studio recording of the band, predated only by the test run of Great King Rat maybe an hour earlier, thanks to us now being able to see the tape box), Freddie apologizes to the engineer and producer for Brian needing to tune his guitar. This is how every band begins - not being in charge. On that note, a quick thought on the Imperial College recording from a couple years earlier. The scene is one that literally every band will experience some variation of in its nascent stages - they're performing for 20 people, finishing with cover tunes, and the singer points out that he and the guitarist are sharing a microphone. How privileged we are to hear them at the beginning of their quest of world domination. And unlike 99.999% of bands, this one actually succeeded.

A little after midnight the whole shebang appeared in my Apple Music queue, so I spent a little time bouncing around discs and listened to certain snippets of songs. The only full tracks I listened to were the live Hangman and Jesus, Take 3 and instrumental of Seven Seas, and Takes 1 and 2 of The Night Comes Down, but everything blew me away. I’m going to dive in later this morning, starting with the sessions disc. With each of these sessions discs I’ve felt like I did when I got Made In Heaven back in ‘95, my first “new” Queen album since becoming a fan: the anticipation of waiting to get home to hear it, followed by the tremendous rush of awe, happiness, and sadness at the album’s end, and the immediate desire to listen again and again and again. It’s like Christmas morning every time, and, strangely, it makes me feel like a kid again. Last night I too felt like a kid again. Got home and it was around midnight so I put on YouTube to see if the Keep Yourself Alive video might be available early but to my surprise the whole damn album was there from the official Queen channel! So I stayed up and listened like a giddy little kid to the whole thing. I was grinning from ear to ear. I flashed back to getting albums on day of release and listening to new songs for the first time ever. I remember some stores used to stay open until midnight on some Mondays to be able to sell the big new releases then (Tuesdays were new release day). And this new mix was so worth it to stay up late for. Then this morning I listened to all the CDs in order on Spotify. I love the new mixes. The sessions mixes are incredible. Just one highlight for me: Freddie’s count-in to GKR! I’m still grinning thinking about it. And in the instrumental to Liar there is a section that sounds remarkably like It’s Late (or maybe that’s the other way around lol). It’s hard to believe that’s been there the whole time and I never noticed it before. I guess the voices just got in the way. This release makes me so happy, and I’m still feeling like a kid! Well done, Brian and Roger!

One more thing: I love the intro to My Fairy King on the sessions disk that they couldn’t get right. Since this is labeled “Trident Backing Track in Development” this is obviously early in that song’s recording. I love the way this song starts on the album, but it’s fascinating to hear this ultimately unused opening. And John’s voice makes an appearance between all the attempts at getting it right!

Listening to all the rougher versions of Jesus including the live version, I think it was a mistake to abbreviate the track for the final album version. It clearly had the makings of a guitar driven epic fans would’ve been yelling out for at concerts.

Hello all,
I too am a fan of many decades. This is the nearest that its been to getting a “new” Queen album for such a long time.
Don’t know if anyone’s noticed yet, but we get to find out the source for Freddie’s “are we running “ from Track 13 on Made In Heaven. When I heard it, and then realizing that it’s from the sessions for the first version of Seven Seas Of Rhye, from the very first album, sent a shiver down my spine, to quote another song.
It links the beginning to the end, or in this case, the end to the beginning.
We’re still finding out stuff about our favourite band after so many years. Brilliant stuff indeed!

After having only heard things once, I have to go over things with a fine-toothed comb eventually... but my initial reaction is to be much more satisfied than I thought I would be! The pitch correction is definitely there and definitely superfluous, but it wasn't as heavy-handed as I had feared it would be. Maybe next time they'll just skip it altogether! One can hope. It's such a bizarre choice to pitch-correct takes that are supplied to illustrate artifacts of the creative process that are supposed to be imperfect anyways.
The banter is so wonderful. I wonder how much was as-is and how much was cobbled together from different takes/sources. I'd love to have that job! There's a cordial feeling in their banter... I'd be interested to compare it to banter from a Hot Space session. Hearing a young Brian noodle around in the studio left me awestruck – he's so good, even at such a young age.
Hearing the acoustic start to Doin All Right brought a tear to my eye. And as Jesus was a rarely listened-to track for me, after listening to several different versions, I have a new appreciation for it – especially the harmony structure. I agree with whoever it was who said the mythical status of Hangman has been blown out of proportion – it's that classic lost media phenomenon where the lostness of something is the most special thing about it. It's a fine song, but not a revelation. Must've been annoying to be asked about that a million times!
Imperial College stuff was so interesting, although I was all geared up for a Spencer Davis Group jam rather than a Bo Diddly blues number.

I googled some iTunes Charts for the album. It’s currently at 16 in the UK and maybe was up to 10 at one point. 68 in the US. 19 in the worldwide chart. So I guess it may well beat its original chart position in the UK when the official chart is released.

Okay, Now I got to listen to the sessions disc. This is the kind of session you'd normally find in any one of The Beatles' last few deluxe releases, and I mean that in a good way. Even their banter between takes remind me of The Beatles at times, especially on Mad The Swine.
God, I hope they do Queen II next. I could hear Ogre Battle with heavier drums in my head as I typed that. Easy on the autotune though!

I have this but with KYA. The rest wasn’t too jarring for me. I don't hear the bass at all in the new mix of "Keep Yourself Alive", but this box set give me chills since this morning. I appreciate very much the '2024 Mix' of the De Lane Lea Demos (especially "Keep Yourself Alive" - those extra screams by Roger Taylor were buried somewhere in the original mix and I love them!), the unreleased live material and the new mixes of "Mad The Swine", "Liar" (those drums!) and "The Night Comes Down"....with a more adequate and careful listening I will appreciate this new release even more I guess. I received my LP a few hours ago and I listened it. I stand by what I said yesterday...I really like the work done on this new mix. I look forward to the same treatment being given to "Queen II" soon...a fresh new mix of tracks like "Some Day One Day", "The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke" and "The March Of The Black Queen" I think will be amazing. If that happens, who knows what bonus tracks (especially live) they will decide to include in a possible boxset....
It wouldn't be a crazy idea to start a petition to have more early live recordings released, such as the entire concert at Imperial College on 23 August 1970 or the tape of the performance at The Marquee Club on 20 December 1972 (which apparently was recorded). Maybe title it "Queen - The Early Live Tapes"....

The outtakes on this set are amazing, a real look into the creative process and I absolutely love the studio chatter before and sometimes even in the middle of the songs, very entertaining and interesting to hear. The new mixes are great and really fun to listen to.
With The Miracle set and now this I can only hope they do this type of release for the rest of their albums.
Massive potential for interesting content when they dive into the outtakes and sessions like this.

I have now ordered the two disc version after "Lord Fickle's" glowing recommendation ,I couldn't find it on Amazon ,so I ordered it from "Queen Online." By the time they add Tax ,VAT & Shipping , I am sure it can be found a lot cheaper elsewhere. It's my Birthday next week so if I get some cash injection it's going to be a toss up between the full box set or some of the Japanese Live CD's that they have in stock at the moment.

Who knows, there might be something in the works that they're saving the rest of these early shows for? Perhaps it's significant that very little live material has been included in the box sets so far for that reason? The Miracle being the exception, of course.

I believe that in any case the fans would be happy to finally see some unreleased live performances, even if the quality is not excellent... an example of this is the Imperial College tape, which for me is sublime because of its nature.

The 2024 mix is (mostly) terrible. Queen 1 never had a good mix to begin with, but the excessive, unnecessary autotune sticks out like a sore thumb to anyone who has heard this album before. The drums also sound super fake and over compressed. The balance is all off here, and some tracks are bordering on unlistenable, like Doing All Right and Liar, where the drums don't even have a consistent sound quality. The only track on here that sounds better to my ears is Son and Daughter, which benefits from the "crank the drums to 11" effect only because of the nature of the song. This matches what I saw with the new mix, like there were few moments where I picked out pitch correction on my first casual listen, and even the instruments going out of balance during "Liar". There were points where the mix clicked (usually when Freddie came in) and then after, it just loses itself. Just some details that are surprising they never really combed over, you know? I'd say "Mad The Swine" was an improvement as well, the '91 is pretty serviceable but it needed a pinch more backbone.

Well, I listened to the 2024 mix of the 1973 album last night. Powerful, fresh. Sometimes it seemed like some instruments were recorded this year. In some songs, it was like something was missing and it wasn't the bass guitar. It was like the instruments were removed in the middle, which created a void. I don't care about autotune at all. I like the new mix. It brought elasticity, juiciness to the sound, which was so lacking in the original and numerous remasters.

Funny you should say that, after hearing about KYA as the next single I suddenly had this vision of the band releasing their entire catalogue again in order, including the singles. It would of course be the ultimate rehash, but I'll bet no band has ever gone through their career twice . If they're going to do that they'd better get a move on or I might not get to hear them all! 😄 Same here, although there is a strange comfort in the idea that I might just kick the bucket before they get to Hot Space .

My post got moved, but anyway. I have to also say the new mixes are pretty terrible. The bass has been removed almost completely, the drums are actually too bright and Freddie's voice is raised so high that it drowns out everything else (except for the drums). Some of the mixes have "glitches" and sloppy editing that makes me think it was a rush job. Anyway below I posted an "updated" mix of My Fairy King that I made using AI separation plus the new 2024 mix. Listen to that compared to the meatless recording on the boxset and tell me you can't hear a difference. queenchat.boards.net/thread/5529/queen-alternate-mixes-youtube-links?page=1&scrollTo=116149

Yes, I think so too. But the drum solo is kinda different with kongas and stuff. Now we know its mostly Take 13. GKR is by the way very identical to one convention Tape (rather obvious bc it's called Take 1 too). But there are some changes too. Isn't the convention version from Trident ? The box set's is De Lane Lea. I think it has to be De Lane Lea, because its very similar to the boxset version. There is another Convention Version called 'Take 4'. But the version from the boxset DLL Take 1 - w guide vocal has strangely enough some differences to Convention Take 1. The Convention Take 1 starts with Freddie counting to ten like in the boxset version. Until 'Died syphilis forty-four on his birthday' they are similar. 'Every second word he swore; Yes, he was the son of a whore; Always wanted by the law' is different. Then, the three 'A wouldn't you like to know's are similar again, but the part 'Great king rat was a dirty old man; And a dirty old man was he; Great king rat was a dirty old man' is completly different with other lyrics in the boxset version (Great king rat was a dirty old man; And a dirty old man was he now listen; What did I tell ya;). The 'Would you like to see?' and 'Yeah' after that is identical and from then on the whole convention tape which ends at 03:42 (Boxset-Version) with Freddie counting. So, I found two differences but only in the vocals. Does this mean the 'De Lane Lea Take 1 - with Guide Vocal' in the boxset isn't always Take 1? If I remember in the NOTW Boxset, all different versions were called 'Sessions Version', bc they cut different takes together, I think in some cases here too, but it's not that significant, on the other hand nice to now. Edit: here is a link to the convention Take 1 from Chin's YT channel: www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsXYowGIsjE

I’m loving the atmos mix.. but for sure can use a bit of work done on them since a few of the instruments are buried in this mix. Listening to the stems has been really nice! Lots of things I never noticed or was added!
