The latest Bowie remix album - a modern twist on his 1970 The Man Who Sold The World album - kept one of the songs in it's original mix because they 'thought it couldn't be improved'. This was quickly decoded as 'we can't find the multitrack' and rendered the whole project redundant. At least, left a bitter taste that they lied about it.
Queen and Bowie were neck and neck with disappointing / occasionally inspired archival releases. Each amazing and unexpected release quickly being forgotten as they revert back to the same old. I think Bowie is currently in the lead though as this 50 year rule begins to bite. I guess the difference is that he always knew the value of his unreleased material and used it to leverage more money from new publication deals as he slowly drip dripped it out. Queen don't see outtakes like that. I guess we see how Queen react over the next couple of years as studio stuff becomes 50 years old.

"Only two that will care"
Wait, I thought John despite retiring from music actually has involvement with what Queen can release?

"Only two that will care" Wait, I thought John despite retiring from music actually has involvement with what Queen can release? It's never entirely clear, but I get the sense that they send him everything they plan to do and he has the right of veto. ..and that gets expressed in different ways, one of which could be "he hasn't vetoed anything yet, so probably wouldn't now", or in short "only two care"

Maybe - and it depends on what kind of royalties. Mechanical and performance, sure. Songwriting, definitely not. No matter who owns the songs, that money is yours as the writer (and your estate's after you die).
...without getting into exceptions like American songwriters with BMI who wrote or own compositions from before 1978.

I have the feeling that the guys used to run things past john and he never replied so now they just do what they want. At least he wont catch covid, hes been self isolating for 25 years! ha, zing.
As for the legalities - if he's still one of the people on the board of directors, every word of it still ends up on his desk whether or not he responds to it.

Generally if there's no "real" money to be made from that material, they won't bother with releasing it at all. There are exceptions, of course, but not too many.

Since the early 2000's they also record every concert and you can either buy it online or scan your ticket (if you attended the concert) and download it for free: www.livemetallica.com/A much better experience than Queen's live downloads from the Paul Rodgers tour, with one song from each concert and they didn't even bother doing that for all the concerts.

Radiohead released a full concert per week on YouTube during the first UK lockdown last year. They said they did it for their fans. Queen don't need to make money. It'd be nice to see them release some stuff on YouTube for their fans too.

I can see that little mention of the show we got a few weeks ago, being the only thing to happen from this. But Brian, Roger prove me wrong.

I am thinking that, it is very difficult to release another compilation with GH or GH with some lesser known songs since GH, Platinum and Bohemian Rhapsody OST still have very good sales.
GH live album is somehow Rock Montreal and On Fire, the latter in 2004 had Easter egg where you could play the DVD/Blue Ray without HS songs.
Maybe they are going to release the first album with extras from 2011 and the new found concert.
Also they maybe do a new documentary and book with live photos from 1971-75 period.
Finally there is the miracle boxset.
But with what we have got from Queen productions + record company, we might get one of the same.

Hmmm, that does sound more promising, although I would still expect it to be a cold day in Hell before we get anything new in Archive or Anthology form.
Very much a glass half-empty outlook on Queen output for me I'm afraid.

Well that certainly is a new tit bit. He confirmed its an imperial college gig and the reasons they dont like releasing old scraps. Maybe they will change their minds on anthology releases now... I'd venture to say it's one of the two 1971 shows - July 11 or October 6.
If it's not released before the 50th anniversary, the window to cash in on the copyright dump will pass. Many of the big bands are doing it now.
I'd be very surprised if there wasn't a press release in the next few months. I highly doubt Brian would be going out of his way to talk about it this many times if there wasn't a plan to release it.
If this happens, then perhaps we can expect a string of similar releases for years to come. QPL will not want to pass up on the coin, especially if they see the publishing revenues too.
