This is a list that I have made which covers I hope, every performance/video of Queen and solo projects on Top Of The Pops. Let me know of any inaccuracies. I will make a note beside each episode if the Queen segment is available, full or fragmented, and also the position number in the chart!

Thank you for this thread and all of the footage and photos, etc. I haven't yet seen a complete January 16, '75 video for NIH and I don't think I've ever seen any footage nor photos of their other videos made for the song. Up until now I've never seen the version of WATC within which Freddie is shown playing the piano although I've known for 30+ years that it exists.

Regarding the video for GOFLB, as far as I know there is only one promo video for the song, the one you've posted which is also on Queen's Greatest Video Hits I DVD. I think the recording date provided for the video in the DVD booklet is July 14, 1977 and I think I've seen the same date elsewhere corresponding to the same vid. I'm not sure which date is correct but just wanted to point it out.

Apologies, the non-audience version wasn't mentioned either, but I didn't notice the audience in the still (or hadn't noticed the lack of audience in the vid).

Best guess for an explanation is that the intention was to film in front of an audience (as was standard TOTP practice), but something went wrong that wasn't noticed before the audience were shuttled out. So they either went back and did it again without an audience, or used the footage from a camera rehearsal.

Always used to wonder why Roger moaned so much about doing TOTP, but looking at that lot they did do about 8 different appearances between Feb 74 and 75, plus sundry other mimed shows.

Guess he just got tired of the cymbals that went "dunk".

No, it never happened, not on TOTP anyway, and here's why - a Musicians Union strike meant there were no shows broadcast between 28th May and 7th August, PTG being in the charts during June.

TOTP was the best publicity a young struggling British band could have back then. It would've been career suicide to turn it down. We wouldn't be talking about this if they did.

You've not posted the 2nd SSOR performance (14 March) in your thread, I assume by accident as it's your upload!

Now. There was NO Queen performance on 21st March 1974, the website you have used erroneously repeats the listings for 21 February (This error occurs across many listings sites, I'm using Popscene which seems to be properly curated.)

So there were just THREE SSOR performances on TOTP. The 28th March final performance is Freddie in the black and white striped top (with DLT annoyingly crashing the stage).

We should be grateful there is video for all three, quite remarkable really.

I'm delving into Killer Queen next, there's possibly something interesting to be unearthed but will report back

--EDIT--- It seems I was wrong earlier, so here's the updated version.

The Black jacket/Les Paul performance is apparently the first, ie 11 October.
Which means the famous Fur Coat footage is actually the second KQ totp performance, and from 24th October.
There is no evidence that the Fur Coat second take was ever broadcast - though in theory either could have gone out on the 24th. The "first take" seems more likely though, as this was definitely used on the December 27th repeat.
Black Jacket/Les Paul repeated - 7th Nov (with Savile intro)
Red Jacket - 21st Nov

(I noticed Chinwonder2 that you have incorrectly labelled the repeat performance as November 11 on your Youtube vid description.)

Fun digging though this lot. Will have a proper gander at NIH next.

OK a few more notes and observations.

Now I'm Here - the existing TOTP performance as far as I can find out is NOT from 16/1/75. That performance, about which we know almost nothing, is missing, believed wiped.

The existing NIH video is from the 30/1/75 broadcast. Two sources serve for this - info apparently direct from the tape's owner, from the missing episodes site, but also, that the exact same set is used for Steve Harley's performance of "Make Me Smile", which did not feature on the show until this 30th January edition.

The 3rd and final NIH, broadcast 13th Feb, was a repeat (but it is unknown of which recording).

I also strongly believe the final 21/11/74 Killer Queen performance (Freddie in red jacket) definitely still exists - based on several pieces of evidence - in the hands of at least one private collector. I won't go into details (yet?), but the "Hello" totp footage is the key.

Is it an idea to have one thread (maybe this one) that has the definitive TOTP listings/videos? One that could be stickied perhaps (ah I see it has been, but pehaps should be in Video section) and kept updated?

I've read through dozens of old TOTP posts/threads on Queenzone, plus a few here that have fallen into the mists of time, as well as the Missing Episodes website. I'm afraid I got a bit obsessed with pinning things down, but I'm no archivist. However I'm confident with the dates I listed above, and I'm happy to show my "workings", i.e other people's research, lol.

(Meanwhile this thread queenchat.boards.net/thread/374/killer-queen-on-top-pops is still useful despite some missing links.)

Most notable I think is that the famous "Fur Coat" Killer Queen seems NOT to be the songs 1st totp performance (11 October), but its 2nd, on 24 October. (The 'alternate take' Fur Coat never being broadcast seems to be fair conjecture as well.)

The "Freddie in all white" photo is I believe the lost Now I'm Here TOTP performance (16 January 75), nothing to do with the Christmas Rock on With 45 (where Freddie's in all black) or TopPop. I could be wrong but it definitely looks like a TOTP set and is the only Queen TOTP appearance otherwise unaccounted for.

After Bo Rhap comes out it's much easier to trace things, as the TOTP archives are more complete from 76, and anyway from then on it's 99% Queen promo videos.

What do people think? I know Queen on totp/lip sync is a minority interest but it'd be good to get it right.

Hi, Play the game didn’t feature on Top of the pops as the programme was off air for a few weeks at that time due to some dispute.
