And probably my most favorite newspaper clipping relating to that night. This is funny Bassists, man. We get that a lot! This Musicland Studios page's got some good stuff! Surprised to see some ELO pics too. Here's one of Freddie when they were just starting to use the studio. I believe Ratty took this pic.

True! Actually, a lot of pics were taken on that pillow bench through the years. It looks like it was some sort of resting place in the studio.

Deacy on a Strat! Now that's something I never thought I'd see! Also, I don't think that's 1979. Fender didn't start making that version of the Stratocaster until 1980. So, how good was JD on guitar (not bass)? On the NOTW box version of Who Needs You, it sounds like he was playing the acoustic, when I'd always assumed that was Brian, but I guess it could just be the way the track was patched together. Is there any evidence of Deaky playing anything other than bass guitar on any other tracks? well I think yes. i've found some pics of john with other instruments except bass, I share them very soon

I think the piano one is from early '83. Not 100% sure, though...

Looks like Seb is going to take care of this one, but the first bit that comes to mind is the first guitar solo in Misfire - that's Deacon.

I think the piano one is from early '83. Not 100% sure, though... It's almost certainly 83, as the album was finished by January 84.
And chances are they weren't noodling around at the end of the sessions - they were busy mixing.

Has this entire image ever been out there ? On the (now defunct) Maradona website the text was part of the image itself.

Whether people particularly like the track or not, the chords used (specifically during the chorus and the outro) are so hypnotizing and beautiful.

He also played acoustic guitar in spread your wings. Maybe the acoustic parts of Mad the Swine were played by him cause we have a pic of him with acoustic and that could be from one of songs of Queen I Album

Deacon also played the acoustic guitars on She Makes Me. Really !? On a Brian track? That's the first I've heard this. What's your source?
Or maybe we should wait for @sebastian to post his thread so we don't hijack this one with non-picture related posts.

^ I posted these 2 pics on the old board last year. They are taken from Days Of Our Lives documentary. Brian described another photo from that period (with Mike Grose) like that (on his Instagram): "I think this was taken at our very first rehearsal in a lecture theatre in Mech Eng that I booked - at Imperial College." Look at this. Seems to be taken on the same day, by the same photographer. Douglas Puddifoot I guess. (It also has that "fog" on both sides)

And here's the pic Brian was reffering to Looking at their outfits and hair, I would say it's all the same day. So Brian's comment also reffers to those 2 rehearsal pics. That's just my theory.

I have this marked as the early 1982, Hot Space sessions. He had a big afro in 1983. Here's the photo of the band in the studio in 1983, signing with Capitol Records:

It's not like on the 31st of December 1982 he had a military haircut and then on the 1st of January 1983 he looked like Colombian footballer Carlos Valderrama. Those things take a few months to grow, so it's perfectly plausible that he started the year with shorter hair and gradually grew it to the 'Ga Ga' video one.
I still agree that the Jupiter 8 photo can easily be from a different year, though.

Of course I'm fully aware of that. But Queen weren't in a studio in 1983 before August, right? And surely by August, 3 months before Radio Ga Ga video shooting, his hair was bigger than that. Unless it's a photo from 'Picking Up Sounds' session. But I don't even know when they recorded this track.
btw I checked that footballer, incredible hair!

At least we know it doesn't take that long to grow it out.

But Queen weren't in a studio in 1983 before August, right? Queen weren't joined at the hip (much less in those days), so it's perfectly possible for a band member to go to the studios without his colleagues and be photographed playing a synth whilst there. By the way, John and Roger did go to Mountain Studios in early 1983 (the Fan Club magazine confirms that) and they did record some ideas there (without Brian or Frederick), which were unlikely to end up on any album, but still... Oh, and, by the way, the black and white photograph of John playing piano and smiling is from that early 1983 visit to Mountain Studios with Roger. And, yeah, his hair was already bigger than in the Jupiter 8 photo, so your 1982 theory is most likely correct.

Freddie with Tele. 1986 This is actually the 1st time I got to see Freddie's Tele with this much detail (minus the head). Bit of a guitar geek moment here, but I just realized this is a Dan Smith-era Tele. Similar to Jeff Buckley's "Grace" Tele (minus the mods)

Maybe we could work together on some sort of project to document all the guitars they used throughout their career. A bit like Equipboard but with our own personal touch.

3. Freddie watching Freddie on TV in Japan. Nice quality. A bit of background on this one... Queen were touring in Japan in 1985, right when Mr. Bad Guy was released. So during/after an interview with Music Life magazine, Freddie declared he wanted to talk about his solo work. Part way through the interview about the solo album, he said, "Let's watch the video for my new single!" He had the video for I Was Born to Love You already ready to go on the TV, so he played it for everyone in the room. During the part where he was chasing the woman in the video, he said to the interviewer, "Look at this part! Don't I look gorgeous?" (The interviewer would later say she had no idea what was so gorgeous about it.) After the video finished, Freddie said he wanted to watch it one more time, so they did. And then he said, "The volume was a bit too low, so let's watch it again." Then someone from the record company came to the room, so they had to watch it for a fourth time.

3. Freddie watching Freddie on TV in Japan. Nice quality. I recognise that shot from the menus of the Never Boring blu-ray. Also, I forget just how much of the picture was lost to overscan on old CRT TVs. That's a letterboxed shot of the video, but the black bars are almost gone! Compare to this screenshot from the 2000 DVD.
