I imagine the majority of fans would opt for 'Soul Brother' but I reckon 'A Human Body' is the best B-side Queen released. It deserves a place on The Game in place of 'Don't Try Suicide', although that makes the album very Roger-heavy - shows what amazing form he was in at the time. Alternatively, you could put 'Good Times Are Now' on The Game and leave 'A Human Body' as a Roger solo track on his own album. Either way, of all Queen's 'original' B-sides, I think this is the one which deserves more than being tucked away on a single's flipside.

Yeah it's a good song isn't it! I think it was a toss up between this and Coming Soon to make The Game, and while I actually like Coming Soon, it certainly screams B-side.

I can imagine Coming Soon was the either/or - I prefer A Human Body but I'd almost certainly bemoan Coming Soon if it was only a B-side! Perhaps Fun in Space should have just had an extra track.

'A Human Body' certainly is a nice track and a good non-album B-side. The best non-album B-side however for me stays 'I Go Crazy'. I understand why it didn't make the album, but c'mon it rocks!
I think this is the order how I rate Queen's non-album B-sides... that is, at this moment, could be different tomorrow: 1. I Go Crazy 2. Hang On In There (technically a B-side, only bonus on the CD-version of the album) 3. A Human Body 4. Stealin' 5. Hijack My Heart 6. Soul Brother 7. See What A Fool I've Been 8. Lost Opportunity (technically a C-side?) 9. Mad The Swine (I rate this under B-sides, as it never was an official album track) 10. My Life Has Been Saved (original 1989 version is a B-side, only the 1995 version is an album track) 11. A Dozen Red Roses For My Darling

How would you place them in track order for an album?

Maybe it was just more interesting because they used a different take on some of it?

I'd forgotten Stealin' even existed, I'd have to give that a lower position on that basis alone! The recorded version of See What a Fool is only saved by Brian, Freddie's completely at sea and frankly, messes up the whole track. I like I Go Crazy but the self-referencing makes me cringe a bit in this instance.

Oh I love the self-referential bit in I Go Crazy, I always thought that was clever.
A Human Body is my top favorite non-album b-side, followed by I Go Crazy and then most of the Miracle b-sides. Soul Brother is low on the list for me, as I find falsetto singing a little irritating! But A Human Body is much more clever, melodic, and interesting than Coming Soon, which just screams non-album b-side status to me.

If Freddie had sung all of Rock It, they might have put AHB on the album instead of Coming Soon. I bet that was a discussion had, given we know there's a Freddie vocal take of Rock It.

Thats true, but then again Fun It was a Freddie/Roger vocal and More of That Jazz was a Roger vocal, but I’d rather have Roger singing Rock It and be able to skip Coming Soon than have Freddie singing Rock It (which, who knows, might be superior to Roger’s take!). There’s a quote somewhere from Mack that they did indeed have that discussion, and that Roger and John preferred Roger’s take and Freddie and Brian preferred Freddie’s take, so Mack mashed the two together for a happy compromise.

There were more tracks on Jazz, albeit perhaps shorter ones, so I guess there was more room for vocal swaps.

Fun It was more of a vocal duel, while Rock It is two distinct sections.

Apart from DSMN, Side 2 of Jazz doesn't feature in my playlists.

The Game is my favourite album and I would have loved to see A Human Body on there, but I think the struggle would be where to place it in the album. I would have looked at adding A Human Body over Coming Soon, but CS works because it separates the 2 ballads well and I don't think AHB would flow as well.

Soul Brother for me. It's the Queen equivalent of Glass Onion. Great groove, great playing, killer lead vocal, and is stronger than most of the album tracks from that period.

Would have worked great as a hidden track at the end of side 2!

I also like Mad the swine and I go crazy and sometimes I love listening a dozen red roses. About soul brother I believe that, some chord progressions are similar to ITLOTG revisited.

I love Stealin', especially the extended version that was never originally released but floats around on YT. The band seems to have had so much fun recording it, and that is noticeable, I think!

Hi folks!
Just for fun, and seeing that this is being discussed elsewhere here, LOL: what are your favorite Queen b-side tracks?
No versions, just original songs. MLHBS was versioned afterwards though.
Choose up to three!

It's a tie between I Go Crazy and A Human Body for me, and probably Hijack My Heart as a guilty-pleasure third. I really, really don't like Soul Brother. Sorry, The Real Wizard, but that's just not what I call good music

I don't actively dislike Soul Brother, but the falsetto feels particularly unnatural, almost to the extent where it's comedic.

I agree that the vocals seem almost like a parody, but I don't hear much to appreciate in the music either - I just hear going-through-the-motions comping. The whole thing sounds to me almost as if they got drunk and decided to do a soul tune, but nobody in the band knew what soul was, so they had to go by a description given by a sarcastic detractor of the genre.
Maybe I'm missing something, but to me, Soul Brother is pretty near to the bottom of Queen's output. I'd love to hear some concrete points as to what there is to appreciate in the song, but I just don't hear anything worthwhile. In fact, I find it so annoying that I have a hard time listening to the whole thing - like "Don't Lose Your Head".

I know we're going off-topic here, but I'd listen to Don't Lose Your Head any day ahead of Life is Real.

Really? I wouldn't say "Life Is Real" is a masterpiece, but I do think it's one of the better tracks on Hot Space (not a particularly high bar, I know...), and the only redeeming quality I can think of for "Don't Lose Your Head" is "at least it's over after four and a half minutes".
