It's strange, but Breakthru doesn't sound like a Miracle Tour to me, rather like a studio jam like When This Old Tired Body. I'm not sure what you mean, it's far more formed than a bit of Piano Improv. Breakthru has backing vocals and the chorus in place, with mostly formed lyrical verses (Early lyrics but the basics are fully in place) and pretty much finalized bass and drums. There is guitar across the whole track (but no guitar solo yet), Even Freddies "adlib's" in the middle have call and responses recorded. "When This Old Tired Body" is Freddie at a piano scatting, while someone else laughs along with it. Have you confued it with fiddly jam, the early version of hang on in there? It IS a rip off of boys of summer though.

I just compared Freddie's singing style in these two tracks, Fred performs them with great enthusiasm, but for some reason people take them for a live performance?! ) In my opinion, Fred would never have done it so live, the raw version of I Want It All in this case has more similarities with the concert, because there he avoided a few high notes)

I totally get what you mean now, None of the tracks are "live" of course, none have Freddies "Live voice". It's not so much the voice, the but the whole performance of Breakthru just has a live style to my ears, It's stripped back and simplified and then it goes into a section where Freddie can interact with the audience. It's like hearing the studio version of Somebody To Love, then hearing it live, two totally different arrangements for the two different settings. It's also has that brilliant "Breakthru, Breakthru, Breakthru, "Breakthru, NAAAAAWWWWWwwow" bit....

Carrying through my contrarian opinions on this boxset ... the Disc 2 Breakthru track is perhaps the biggest letdown for me, and it falls on Rogers hi-hat. When it's not double-timed, it really loses that 'train on the tracks' feel that I got from the version that ended up on the album.

It's a jarring segue for sure, but I could see them considering it at some point, since other songs seem to have a few clobbered-together bits, like the ending to The Miracle, the beginning of Breakthru, and the ending to Hang On in There. I quite like it, as it reminds me of some of the somewhat eclectic transitions from their earlier albums. Yeah but those other examples actually work, to some extent. I could never see that part being an intro to, or any other part of, IWIA, especially as they've made it sound like an impromptu jam. I guess it could have been an idea for what became the fast part, but why cobble it on to the beginning? It just seems an odd placement, given most of the other stitched together stuff sounds quite convincing. Oops, I wrote "clobbered" instead of "cobbled"! Well, makes for a nice image at least. Eh, maybe one of the reasons why I like it is because I Want It All was never one of my favourites, so I see this new bit added on as an overall improvement. Speaking of clobbered/cobbled-together bits, I think I remember reading somewhere a long time ago that the band was considering making The Miracle album mostly a medley. If that's true, they could have tried putting that jazzy bit between various songs, and maybe it never really had a home. I can't find reference to this concept of a medley album, though. Did I read this from some official source, or was it someone speculating?

That is very intersting, considering that IGWFA leaked demo and new demo have parts of HOIT and the complete fiddly jam Freddie sings in the jam " I guess we're falling..." The band probably was going for the 70s medley like QueenII or SHA.

I also wanted to mention how much the Breakthru demo smacks of plagiarism on Boys Of Summer, which makes me think the album version is the best) even the finished version! hence this thread: queenchat.boards.net/thread/445/queen-inspired?page=1

I think Queen Productions are probably regretting how they sold and marketed the News Of The World box set. Why? Are there two bigger Queen songs on one of their albums? Jazz, The Game and The Works come close but pretty much any human being in the civilised world we'll have heard WWRY and WATC. News Of The World pretty much only came with two formats, the expensive box set or the new vinyl reissue. This The Miracle reissue had so many different formats, including the budget but clever two disc deluxe edition. This should've been done with News Of The World reissue. The fact NOTW, which could be seen as the easiest Queen album to market (big songs, huge tour with filmed concert, iconic album cover, behind the scenes footage of recording the album, etc.), didn't do a budget two disc edition is why it only peaked at #58 compared to The Miracle's #6. Personally they should do the News Of The World box set again do they can do a two disc edition. Perhaps it's too late now, the fans may have already got the "new" tracks. I was hoping with The Miracle box set going on streaming services, they would put the NOTW on. Seriously though, all the Beatles reissues have either gone to #1 and #2 because they do lots of different formats. If Queen did this in the first place, NOTW would've probably beaten it's #4 in the UK and quite possibly go to #1. Notw sold much more in first week, same Rainbow boxset compare The Miracle with its all formats, boxset , 2cds, picture disc, digital and stream. Only 7,834 sales in UK , many sales come from buyers outside UK. During NOTW 2017 Queen were announcing US , European , Casino concerts. It was more an excuse for big tour rather a reissue. However it had bigger sales. But you have to remember that five years is a long time in the music industry nowadays. In the UK, albums don't require as many copies to be sold to peak higher. A number one album these days often requires just 10-12k copies to be sold with is frankly a minuscule amount. And with streaming more popular and the cost of living going up, people's methods of listening and buying music has changed. It's got lower so the bar for albums has dramatically decreased.

Yes indeed physical sales are low and to peak #1 depending the quarter has variations from 15000 to 1000000. However Queen hardcore fans seems not buying. Under 10k first week with some sales outside UK and second week at 133 with sales about 1200. This says something about boxsets especially Queen boxsets. GH reissue sold great which isn't bad ,but it isn't good either. Face it alone sold digital and physical well. Confused situation...

Disc 1 I alreay have in original CD and 2011 remaster. Disc 3 I have all of those except track 9 and 10 and I dont like the mix. Disc 4 and 5 are not of any interest to me. Disc 2 is the only reason to buy together with "I want it all" promo video. Disc 1 should have been remix like "Revolver" and the Blu-ray need to be of better quality. That would have been super intersting.

I'm surprised that so few fans really enjoy listening to instrumentals/backing tracks. I always like to listen to them as an alternative to the main album. Arrangement of Queen songs are so clever that it's really great to have an oppotunity to hear all the nuances of instrumentation.

Interviews, LP and Blu-ray and DVD not intersting. It would be better , if they hold the video for a future release with realy good restoration like IWIT. So and triple cd or a small boxset it could be much more affordable and ofcourse better.

The instrumentals is ok and wellcome the issue is how many times we have to buy the same thing or formats that are not useful. Blu ray and dvd in the same box, LP with a bait tracklist, interviews etc

I will admit the queen for an hour is a new version from the one’s previously released they don’t cut out any songs. I don’t think we’ve ever heard this version before. And it’s nice to hear the rockline interview.

Instrumentals can be interesting, but I was listening to the 'karaoke' version of FIA earlier, and couldn't help but think it would have been better (and the single might have sold more) had they given us the original demo as the b side.

It was marketing strategy. The instrumental version counts as unit in the charts. So for every single copy is sold a double copy is for the charts. While a different b/side , the single counts as one copy.

Hello,
When the Miracle boxset released, Water was one of the demos included. What do you guys think about the track? It doesn't sound like a Queen track at all, more like just a Brian track. But it is personally one of my favorites. Do we have any info on this track?
Thanks!

It's OK, but obviously in it's very early stages. It's a nice melody that could have been developed, but I prefer You Know You Belong To Me of the two Brian tracks.

I've had this in the house since late November, but I couldn't listen to it till after Christmas. Quite frustrating, but.. but... so worth the wait. Disc 2 is amazing. Particularly Breakthru and The Miracle. When The Miracle album came out, the review in Record Mirror? (I think, not sure, not going to check, I used to read all of them) said that Breakthru was the aural equivalent of scoring a goal and that phrase stuck with me over the years. Well this version is scoring a hat trick. I cannot get enough of it, the pure joy in Freddies voice in parts of this track are just beautiful.
My wife never liked the track, she always hated the metronomic train track bassline, (Something I always loved), but she adores this version.
Anyhow, both this and the NOTW alternate album are fabulous and I humbly beg of the group to find ways to do more of them for other albums.
So good I have broken my silence on this forum, I cannot understate how good it must be for me to do that.

I agree about the alternates discs from NOTW and now The Miracle – I think they’re fascinating and revelatory, yet I’ve always been confused that this doesn’t seem to be enough for fans. Perhaps it’s the cost of the boxes compared to the content, which I understand, but both Raw Sessions discs have been well worth the money (for me, of course!) and, like you, would love to see the concept followed through on subsequent theoretical reissues.

Definitely the instrumentation matters here. Even though the tracks have clearly been polished up in the studio, overdubbed etc, they still sound kinda raw. We can totally picture a 5-piece band playing these versions of Party, Kashoggi's Ship, Breakthru and The Miracle on stage (assuming Spike on keyboards to keep Freddie free to roam around, as he'd been doing in the 80s). But I still think there's something about Freddie's voice that contributes to the "live" feeling. I know he more often than not would spare his voice on stage and avoid the higher notes, but there's more about the live feeling than the exact notes he's singing. Perhaps it's more about the notes he isn't singing. One of the elements that "gets" us when listening to a live performance for the first time is how we're expecting the melody to go a certain way and then Freddie surprises us by going a different way. The same about the lyrics: whenever Freddie tries a different word here and there or just drops meaningless sounds, it really gets our attention. One last thought: he sounds like he's having a blast here. Whether he's going for the most difficult notes or just staying comfortably within one octave, it's not difficult to catch him having fun on stage. As great as he was in the studio, most of his studio work seems very rehearsed and was probably recorded over multiple takes, and it sounds very different than his live performances. So perhaps we feel like we're listening to a live version because the instrumentation is simplified and raw and Freddie's diverging from the melody and lyrics we've been hearing for the past 35 years or so.

Finally had the opportunity to listen to this over the holidays. Some quick hit thoughts:
- I've never listened to Party/Kashoggi's Ship so much since 1989 - Still not a fan of Rain Must Fall, My Baby Does Me - Wish they had kept the more 'live' feeling of the songs instead of the compressed/80's synth end result on the album. How did they get from these outtakes to the final results? - Where are the outtakes for the B-sides? - Love the Breakthru real drums/bass, but can see why they went with the final version - Love John's ending to The Miracle; would have been neat if they had gone that route - Love Brian's demos. Wonder if they were ever given any extra treatment by the band - I can see why there was thought of the additional album; so much material that could have been worked on further
I got the box set. It's quite nice. Haven't had a chance to read the book yet, but flicked through it.
Looking forward to the next box set release (hopefully)

Party- I prefer raw seesions
KS- Raw sessions
The Miracle- album version
I Want It All- close one, but I'll pick album version.
Invisible Man- at first I thought raw session, but with multiple listens I'll give the edge to The album version.
Breakthru- raw session
RMF- album version
Scandel- album version
My Baby Does Me- raw session
WIAWI- both are equally great.

Did anybody notice that on the Instrumental track of Was It All Worth it you could hear Freddie singing in the other room? You have to increase the volume to hear his voice. Particularly from 1.04 to 1.22 I didn't analized the other Backing tracks yet...
